When a British man with the grace of a panther and the smile of a hyena walks into Jane's place of work and demands to have access to sealed records, Jane has a feeling that her day is about to go swiftly downhill. The city of New Orleans is in the midst of a turf war. Vampires, led by a surprisingly warm ex-slave named Marcel, terrorize the local coven of witches in an effort to stop their haywire magic and ethically questionable rituals. A Cajun cop and a rogue werewolf struggle to contain the madness, and Klaus Mikaelson overlooks it all, searching for an opportunity to reclaim the city he helped found. So where does mild-mannered, college professor Jane fit into all of this?

Klaus makes demands of her time and access to the town's archives, and in exchange, offers to help Jane discover who she is and where she came from: What really happened on the cold, snowy night that marks the first memory of her existence? And when the truth is finally revealed, will she be able to fight off his advances and reclaim the life she never had to begin with?

In the background is Chloe Saxon, a newly-turned, Scottish ballerina who struggles with the morality of being under the control of the Mikaelsons, as well as her inconvenient feelings for the spoken-for eldest brother: Elijah.
