Ok, so I'm leaving you with a long chapter that hopefully sums up the story a bit in case I don't return to it :)
Hope you like it :)
Shauna's POV
Michael was too stubborn for his own good. Every time I tried to convince him that we needed to leave or we'd be crushed, he just screamed that "Serena isn't dead!" and would fight with all his strength to get back to her. Even when the ceiling started falling, he refused to listen to me. But I refused to give up. Calem had asked me to do this and I would do it if it was the last thing I ever did.
When the light started spilling into the room, the heaving weight of doom in the room seemed to lift off of my shoulders slightly. By the time the second chunk had fallen, I was completely cut off from Calem and light fell on my face. I panicked for Calem, but the feeling was hard to hold onto when I was staring up at the open sky. It was like a beacon of hope. I even stopped trying to drag Michael away for a moment to bask in its glory.
But when the shadow fell across my face, my stomach flipped and I thought, Crap, it's got us. We're dead.
I scrambled to reach Michael and furiously tried to pry him away from Serena. It was hard enough seeing her like that without having to deal with Michael. I tried to push my emotions away, but if someone in this world was capable of doing that while staring at the dead best friend, they deserved a medal… or they were just a monster. Tears streaked down my face, out of my control, and my heart shattered every time I caught a glimpse of her out of the corner of my eye.
It wasn't until I looked up that I suddenly calmed. Ease washed over me and I settled on my heels for a moment. As I stared up at the sky, I saw the Pokémon that I had seen only once before, and only briefly. It was the blue deer, a set of magnificent antlers growing from its head. My breath caught in my throat.
The monster in the room seemed to have sunken into a corner. The deer-Pokémon glanced at me for a moment, then looked down at Serena. It snorted, and its antlers began to glow slightly. I turned and looked down at Serena, who, to my disbelief, was shrouded in a silvery glow. Even as I watched, the wound in her stomach stitched itself together and her skin gained colour.
I looked back at the deer-Pokémon and it blinked at me once, then twice, as if it were trying to tell me something. Then, it turned its attention back to the dark Pokémon and let out a tremendous roar that sent my skin crawling.
Something clicked in my head, and I turned to Michael. "Quick. We need to move. Help me get Serena back to the door."
For once, Michael seemed to process what I said, and he nodded. Together, we pulled Serena back towards where Calem was waiting. I searched for a way around the boulders that had fallen from the ceiling, and that's when we found Serena's Pokémon. They were chipping away at one of the boulders, moulding a small path for us. It touched my heart.
We followed the Pokémon back through the gap, and soon we were back with Calem. He lay unconscious on the floor in front of the door, an egg the size of a baseball on his head. "I've got Serena," I told Michael, "You get the door then help Calem."
He didn't look all that happy about it, but he agreed. I had to suppress myself from snorting. It was like he didn't trust me with Serena. It wasn't like she was my best friend or anything… who did this guy think he was?
Once the door was open, Michael stumbled through with Calem while I pulled Serena after me; her Pokémon took up the end of the line. As we passed into the hallway, there was a loud boom! From the room we had just fled. I jumped out of my skin, but managed to keep hold of Serena.
Serena mumbled in my ear, and my heart speed up. She was alive? It couldn't be… but then again, the reason I had dragged her along with me was in hope that the deer-Pokémon and its glowy-ness had actually done something significant. But still, it was just a tad too hard to believe.
Serena was actually alive. My best friend was alive.
Serena's POV
Voices in my head were not welcome.
At least, that's what I thought. Of course, the voices in my head had other plans.
At first, it was just the cold, dark, evil voice echoing through my brain, laughing at my torment. You're friends are such silly humans. Their heart-break just fuels my amusement.
I was floating in complete darkness, and I was the only presence. The voice echoed around me, weighting down my heart, but it had no presence. It was just a voice. Yet it still chilled me to the bones and sent fear into every corner of my body. Still, I managed to retaliate, "They aren't silly. Don't underestimate them."
The voice laughed. Their attacks cannot harm me. Even your own Pokémon, as strong as I admit they may be, pose no real threat to me.
"They'll beat you," I said, although I wasn't sure, "I'm sure of it."
For a long time after that, the voice went quiet, and I was alone. I felt myself fading, disappearing, somehow, and it scared me. It scared me more than I have ever known. I wrapped myself into a ball in the endless darkness, trying to ward off the cold that enveloped me.
I brought my hand up in front of my face, and my heart sunk when I saw that it was slowly turning transparent. I felt like crying, and screaming at the same time. I was powerless against whatever it was that was eating away at me.
You're scared, the voice echoed, Soon, you will be nothing, and I will have all the power I could ever want or need.
"You're wrong," I mumbled.
I'm right! The voice roared. For the first time, I felt its anger, and it froze me in fear. It wasn't like the kind of anger that you had to take when you're parents got annoyed at you for doing something you weren't meant to do. It was pure, unfiltered anger.
For a long time after that, there was no voice. I was left alone again, but my body remained frozen with fear and shock.
Wake up, came the voice again. Except this time, it wasn't the voice. It was another voice. This one seemed calmer somehow. It seemed to thaw the icy fear in my chest. You're friends need you.
I looked around the darkness, but nothing but the new voice had changed. "How?"
But the voice was gone. At least, it was done with speaking to me. Screaming echoed around me. I could make out the angry roars of the original voice, as well as the battle cry of the unfamiliar voice. Above all of that, there was booming and rumbling, as though the darkness around me was crumbling. Along with the battle cries, there was another screaming, right in my ear. It was like my senses were waking up and I was becoming aware of the things that were happening beyond the darkness.
The darkness around me grew lighter. A voice whispered in my ear, and this time it was a real voice… a familiar one. "C'mon, Serena, wake up," Shauna was begging.
It took effort, but I managed to crack open one eye, then another. Five faces peered down at me. Shauna, Michael, Frogadier, Roserade and Charizard. On instinct, my hand flew to my stomach, but all that my fingers brushed was the smooth skin of my stomach.
Before I could get any questions out, Shauna had me locked in one of her infamous bear hugs and I gasped for breath. My Pokémon all chirped happily around me, and when Shauna finally released me, they took turns in coming over to me and snuggling into my chest. I laughed and cried at the same time. Once they had all backed off, my eyes locked with Michael's, and he looked down for a moment, but quickly looked back up.
He scooted towards me and wrapped his arms around me gently. He pressed his face into my hair and I felt his tears drip onto my neck. "Thank goodness you're ok."
I returned his hug and smiled. His embrace was comforting and familiar and so very warm. Familiar… "Where's Calem?" I asked as Michael pulled away.
Shauna looked over her shoulder. Lying about a metre away was Calem. We were all sprawled on the dusty ground that was littered with rubble. I scooted over to Calem and lightly shook it shoulder.
Calem's POV
As my eyes cracked open, I was met with a pair of familiar honey-coloured ones. At first, I thought that I must have been dead. That was the only way that I could have been looking at Serena at that moment.
Without bothering to get up, I reached up and touched her cheek. She closed her eyes and smiled. "You're ok," she sighed in relief.
"You're…" I searched for the words, "You're… you…you're alive."
Suddenly, Shauna's green eyes burst into my vision. She exclaimed, "Isn't it awesome?"
This made me sit up. I clumsily hit my head on Serena's forehead on the way, sending pain jolting through my brain, but we both smiled and moved to give each other room. I blinked away stars, and said, "You have a lot of explaining to do."
Shauna shrugged, "Yeah, I guess. But all I really want to do now is sleep."
"Agreed," Serena mumbled.
"AND!" Shauna added, "You need a doctor, Calem. That egg on your head isn't going to go away on its own."
I ran my fingers gently over the huge bump and winced in pain. "So we head to the hospital?"
Everyone nodded. Suddenly, from behind me, there was a thunderous crashing. I whipped around in alarm, but everyone else seemed to be only slightly fazed by it. "What was that?"
Serena looked over to where the crash had sounded from almost dreamily, "They're still fighting, but for now we shouldn't get involved. I think it would be best for us to leave them."
An uncomfortable silence settled around us. I didn't really understand what she had said, but I didn't speak up.
Breaking the awkwardness, Shauna chirped happily, "Well, we may as well get going then. The sooner we get you to a hospital the better, Calem. Besides," her voice took on an uncharacteristically serious tone, "The further we get away from that, the more I'll be able to relax."
I could tell she meant the 'fight' that was going on.
Serena and Michael nodded their agreement, and we all helped each other to our feet. Serena grasped my hand to help me up and didn't let go. And so we set off towards the closest city, hand in hand. Shauna bounced along beside us and Michael trailed behind us with his shoulders relaxed and hands in pockets, like how I used to walk. Serena's Pokémon hopped along happily ahead of us, playing and chirping as the sun slowly sunk below the clouds.
I'm sorry for leaving you with a bit of a cheesy ending, but I still might continue with this story...
So as always thank you for reading and to those who have reviewed, followed or favourited this story, thank you very much :) It means alot to me and I have ended up being proud of this story as my first ever story.
