Sorry it's been a while again, my life keeps getting complicated. I finished college so no more deadlines but then work got a bit mad and I don't see that changing any time soon unfortunately. I'm going to try and post regularly, or at least semi regularly, but no promises.

Anyway, here's the next chapter, hope you like it.

At the SGC Janet put the phone down and took a moment to take a breath to steady herself. She then got to her feet and took off her doctor's coat. She hung it up and grabbed her bag. After thinking for a second she returned to her desk and wrote a quick note. She ripped the page from the notebook and neatly folded it in half. Leaving her office she then walked into the infirmary and grabbed the nearest nurse.

He turned to her slightly surprised, Janet didn't usually go around man handling her people. "Doctor?" he questioned.

"I've got to leave," Janet said, trying to keep her voice level and calm, she didn't want the nurse to hear the fear in her voice, she didn't want word making it round the SGC that she was scared about something. Conclusions would be drawn and some of them might even be correct. "And I need you to take this to General O'Neill immediately. I don't care if he's busy you give him this note, but it's for his eyes only understand?"

"Yes Doctor," the nurse replied taking the paper from Janet. "Is everything ok?" he asked in a concerned tone.

"Fine," Janet assured him, "Just get that to the General."

"Yes ma'am." The nurse turned and left, hurrying along the corridors towards the lift.

Janet watched him go for a few seconds before she grabbed another nurse.

"I've got to leave," she told them quickly, "Doctor Brightman is around somewhere, can you let him know that he's in charge please?"

"Of course Doctor," the nurse replied, "I hope everything is ok."

Janet just hummed absentmindedly in response. She double checked that she had everything and then made her way to the lift. She waited impatiently for it to arrive and then stood in the lift for what felt like an eternity before it reached the lower levels of NORAD. After another seemingly endless wait the lift to the surface, and another endless journey, Janet was on the surface and headed for her car.

She got in and started the engine. She took a moment to compose herself, getting into an accident on the way to the hospital wouldn't help Sam at all, and then drove towards the security station. The marines at the gate looked a little confused that she was leaving early but they didn't say anything, just waved her through and wished her a good day.

Back under the mountain the nurse rushed through the corridors clutching the note from Janet in his hand. He arrived in the control room and hurried up the stairs, ignoring Walter trying to tell him that the General was in a meeting.

"Sorry for the interruption sir," he said as soon as he reached the top of the stairs, "But Doctor Fraiser said I had to get this to you immediately."

Jack stopped talking, he'd been mid-sentence, and glared at the nurse for his interruption. The nurse swallowed hard, Jack may have mellowed slightly since he'd married Sam but he was still a scary guy, and walked across the room to give him the note.

SG5, who had been in the middle of a briefing, all watched him as he walked, all of them frowning at him. An interruption in the middle of a meeting from anyone but Walter was highly irregular. Speaking of Walter he appeared at the top of the stairs and started to apologise to Jack.

"I'm sorry General, he wouldn't stop," he said, staring hard at the nurse.

"It's ok Walter," Jack said waving him off, "This is clearly important."

He took the note from the nurse and opened it up. As he read the colour drained from his cheeks.

"Walter," he snapped, getting to his feet suddenly, "I've got to go, postpone all my meetings until whoever is in charge when I'm not here gets here, and give them a call and get them in here pronto. Until they get here you're in charge Walter. Also, any mission briefings will also need to be postponed, as will debriefings."

He hurried to his office and grabbed his bag and jacket. He came back into the room. "Call the lift, I need a straight shot up to the surface."

"Yes sir," Walter answered quickly and Jack all but ran from the room. "Is everything ok sir?" Walter called after him.

Jack didn't answer he just hurried along the corridor, bellowing for people to get out of his way. Walter rushed into Jack's office and grabbed the phone. He quickly made sure that the lifts were going to be waiting for the General and then returned to the briefing room.

"You heard him," Walter said to SG5, "Briefing postponed." He then looked at the nurse. "Thank you nurse, you can go back to the infirmary now."

The nurse nodded and left, followed by SG5. The leader of SG5 however stopped in the doorway and turned to Walter. "What do you think that was about Walter?"

"No idea Major," Walter replied, "But I can guess."

The Major nodded. "I hope Colonel Carter is ok."

"Me too," Walter muttered. He then walked back down to the control room and the Major headed after his team.

The door was open to the lift and Jack got straight in, and once he reached the second set the doors were also open and he was on the surface in record time. He ran to his truck and was soon waiting for security to wave him through. Walter must have rung them as well because they waved him through almost immediately and soon he was speeding his way towards the hospital.

He was about half way there, silently freaking out about Janet's note, when he heard a police siren start up behind him and then saw the blue lights behind him. Cursing slightly he pulled over and sat and waited for the officer to come to his window, bouncing slightly in his impatience to get to the hospital.

"Do you know how fast you were going sir?" the police officer asked as he reached the side of Jack's truck.

"I'm sorry officer, my wife has been rushed to hospital and I just wanted to get there. I had no idea I was speeding," Jack said in a rush.

There was a pause and then the officer asked, "Colonel O'Neill?"

"General O'Neil," Jack corrected automatically. He then looked sharply at the officer. "Do I know you?"

The officer nodded. "I was in the station last year when you came in to speak to a group of muggers, who then tried to escape in the station."

Jack looked at him closely and it took him a moment but then he recognised the face. "I remember you," he said.

"You said your wife is in the hospital?" the officer than said. Jack nodded. "You're married to speed freak aren't you? Sorry, I mean Major Carter."

Jack nodded. "She's a Colonel now but yes I am."

"Follow me and I'll get you to the hospital," the officer said, "As quickly as I can."

It took Jack a moment to process what the officer was saying but then he smiled. "Thank you so much," he said quickly.

"Don't worry about it," the officer said, "Colonel Carter is a great person and I wouldn't want you to be late to her side. What's wrong with her anyway?"

"Pregnancy complications," Jack said hurriedly, now eager to be off.

"Say no more," the officer said. He rushed to his cruiser and then pulled out from behind Jack. Once he was in front of Jack he waited for Jack to start his engine then turned on his lights and siren and started driving towards the hospital. Jack stuck on his rear bumper as they drove through traffic, everyone getting out of the way, and they made it to the hospital in record time.

The officer waited until Jack had parked and had jumped out of his truck before he pulled up beside Jack and said, "I hope everything is ok sir."

"Thank you," Jack accepted before he rushed towards the door of the hospital.

"Samantha Carter O'Neill," he said to the nurse at the front desk, "Where is she? I was told she was brought her in an ambulance."

"Family?" the nurse asked him.

"I'm her husband," Jack answered.

The nurse ran a quick search and then spoke calmly to Jack. "Doctor Fraiser is already her and she's taking your wife to surgery. I can't tell you more than that I'm afraid, but if you head up to the fifth floor they'll be able to tell you more."

"Thank you," Jack said over his shoulder as he rushed towards the lifts. He pushed the call button but then saw that they were floors above him. Rather than wait he looked around, found the stairs, and then ran towards them.

Taking them two at a time he made his way to the fifth floor.

"Samantha Carter O'Neill," he said breathlessly to the first nurse he saw after exiting the stair well, "Do you know where she is?"

The nurse looked him up and down and Jack realised he must have looked a bit of a state, he was still in his uniform and he knew he looked more than a little rumpled and sweaty, but right now he didn't care, he just wanted to know what was happening with Sam.

Before the nurse could answer though Jack heard someone say, "General O'Neill."

Looking around he saw Janet standing beside another woman, and both of them were in scrubs.

"Thanks," he muttered absently to the slightly confused looking nurse before he hurried over to join Janet and the other doctor.

"What's happening Doc?" he asked Janet, "How's Sam?"

"She's ok," Janet reassured him, "The babies are in some distress and her blood pressure is high. We don't know what caused it but we're going to deliver the babies early, just to be on the safe side."

"Are they going to be ok?" Jack asked quickly.

"They should be fine," the other doctor said quickly, "They're at thirty eight weeks, and plenty of twins are born this early and are perfectly fine."

Jack nodded but looked to Janet for reassurance. "Doctor Montgomery knows what she's doing Jack," she said softly, "Sam is in good hands."

Jack nodded again, this time more confidently, he was sure that Doctor Montgomery was perfectly competent but he knew and trusted Janet, and if she said Montgomery was ok then Jack was happy to take her word for it, after all, he trusted Janet with the lives of everyone on base.

"Downstairs they said Sam was in surgery," Jack said.

"We're just getting her ready for surgery," Janet corrected gently, "We're waiting for a theatre to become free and then we're headed in." She looked at Jack's worried face and said in a soft voice, "You can see her if you want."

"Yes please," Jack answered quickly.

Janet quickly showed Jack to the room where Sam was lying in a bed, looking pale and afraid.

"Hey Sam," Jack said softly, moving immediately to stand by the side of her bed and gently pushing her hair from her eyes.

"Jack," Sam said, "There's something wrong with the babies." Her speech was slightly slurred but the fear in it was clear.

Jack looked at Janet quickly and she said quietly. "We've given her a mild sedative," she explained, "To try and keep her calm. I can't give her anything stronger though because it will interfere with the painkillers we'll need to give her."

Jack nodded in understanding, he seemed to be doing that a lot today he realised, and returned his attention to Sam. He continued to gently caress her check as he said softly, "I'm sure everything is ok Sam. Janet's right here and she's got everything under control."

Sam looked towards the door, where Janet was still standing, and smiled at her friend. "Janet makes everything better," she said matter of factly.

Jack smiled. "That she does," he agreed softly.

He continued the stroke Sam's face and hair until Montgomery came to the doorway and said softly to Janet, "We're good to go Janet."

Janet nodded and then motioned for Jack to come over and join her. "Do you want to be in there with her?" she asked.

"Of course," Jack answered immediately.

"I thought that would be your answer," Janet replied, "Which is why I grabbed you this." She held out a wrapped pack of scrubs and Jack took them eagerly. He stood to one side as some nurses came into the room and started prepping Sam for travel. He took the opportunity to open the plastic wrap and pull on the scrubs.

Once Sam was ready to go so was Jack and he moved back to stand by her side. Sam reached out and took his hand and held onto it tightly as they travelled down the corridor towards the operating theatre, Janet close behind him with Montgomery, both helping to push the bed.
