Storm Fullbuster leaned against the wall by the kitchen door, tapping his fingers against it erratically. He took a few deep breathes, started to move, then stopped again, shifting his weight from foot to foot. This is stupid, he thought. It's not like they'll throw me out...right? He slowly, carefully peeked his head around the corner. There they were, his parents. His father was sitting at the table, his mother bustling around and rambling something about how coffee isn't meant to have ice in it. Well, at least Mom won't throw me out.
At that moment, Juvia caught sight of her son. She smiled brightly, beckoning him in. "Storm! What are you doing there, sweetie? Come have some breakfast before you and your father go out to train."
Storm shuffled in, rubbing the back of his neck. "Actually, I have something I wanna tell you guys." Here goes nothing.
Juvia's eyes widened, and she set down her cup with a small 'oh.' Gray finished his sip, then looked at him with raised eyebrows.
With a deep breath, he began. "Um, well, it's been on my mind for awhile now, and I'm pretty sure this is what I want, but...um..." he trailed off, not meeting their eyes.
Juvia quickly crossed the room and placed her hands on her son's shoulders. "Storm, you can tell us anything! We're you're parents, and we'll love you no matter what."
Storm cleared his throat. "Yeah...yeah okay." He felt his cheeks heat up at the weight of the gazes fixed on him. Just say it. "I...I want to train with Lyon Vastia!"
Utter silence. Storm waited for his father's reaction. Gray Fullbuster stared motionlessly at a random spot on the wall. His coffee turned to ice.
"Err...Gray-sama..." Juvia inched over to her husband. When she reached out to touch his shoulder, he jumped to his feet, making Juvia squeak. "You want to train with that idiot? What can he possibly offer?"
Storm fumbled for the words he'd prepared. "Well, you see, it's not that you haven't done a great job. I really learned a lot! And I wouldn't train with Lyon forever! Just enough to learn the Basics of Live Ice-Make." Gray seemed to visibly relax. Storm took it as a sign to continue. "You know how I have that water body spell for defense?" he said, the volume of his voice rising in excitement. "I've practiced combining the two magics by turning to ice, but if I can find a way to still move my body while in that form..."
Gray stood with his hands in his pockets, a solemn look on his face. Then, with a sigh, he smiled and shrugged. "I'll admit that would be pretty bada-"
"Gray-sama!"
"What? He's fourteen! If he can go off on his own to train with Lyon, he can handle some swearing!"
As his mother went off on another rant, Storm laughed quietly and bowed his head. Looks like he didn't have to be so worried after all.
