Chapter 7
Anubis's POV
I squeeze Sadie's hand reassuredly as we cross through the Duat and into the Land of the Dead. The lush palms sway in the breeze of the afterlife, and I watch a group of people play volleyball in the distance. Carter keeps giving me dirty looks; I don't blame him, but they aren't making me any less anxious. Osiris is more of a father to me than Set ever was-I'm terrified of his wrath. Sadie looks up at me and my heart breaks. Her eyes are full of fear and terror, love, and empathy. She squeezes back.
"We'll get through this, baby," I tell her, and she gives me a tight hug.
Finally, we get to an open-air pavilion. The sky above is blue, and the columns are covered in grapevines. The table in front was full of hot dishes and fresh fruit. And across from us sit Julius and Ruby Kane.
Sadie's POV
My parents look at us with surprise and excitement.
"Carter, Sadie!" Mum comes up to us and gives kisses. "You too keep getting bigger every time I see you."
Dad grins and gestures for us to come to the table. "Are you alright? I hope you are well." He smiles in Anubis's direction, and I swear he gets even paler than before.
My heart is pounding and my palms are sweat as I try to conjure up the courage to speak. I feel tears building in the corners of my eyes, threatening to spill over at any moment.
"Mum, Dad, there's something-" My voice chokes and I swallow the lump. "There's something I need to tell you." The tension in the air is palpable-my parents looking at me with concern, Anubis about to pass out, and Carter bracing himself.
"I'm sorry-" I start crying, and Anubis grabs my hand once more. "I didn't mean for it happen-"
"What happened, darling?" Mum asks in alarm, her blue eyes distressed.
"I'm-I'm..." I sob loudly. "Pregnant."
Carter's POV
There's silence, except for Sadie's sobs. Mom cups her face in her hands but no tears flow. Dad is rigid in his chair, and his grip on his chair tightens as he stands up.
"Anubis." The way my father says his name with such icy calm and composure unnerves me more than his usual angry outbursts. The god of death is white as a sheet, and blatant terror is etched on his youthful face.
"I've trusted you with many things during my time in the underworld. You know just how precious my children are to me." His speech is cool but his eyes crackle with barely contained anger.
"I trusted you to keep them safe. I trusted you to take care of my daughter. Why," he thunders, and Anubis flinches. "did you do this to me?"
The god of death is silent, mouth slightly agape as if he's trying to form words.
"She's only fourteen," Dad continues, and I'm surprised to see tears falling down his face. "You're ruining her. You're crumpling up her life and throwing it away."
"Dad, please," Sadie begs, her eyes puffy and red. She puts a hand on her stomach that will start to swell. "I've decided to carry them to term. The abortion spell didn't work because they're demigods. They deserve a chance to see the world."
" 'They'?" Mom splutters. "You're having twins?"
Sadie just nods. "I just wanted to tell you both."
Dad strides over to her and kneels in front of her. "Sadie, my little girl," he sobs "You know the risks, don't you?"
She grabs him and hugs him tightly as they keep crying. Anubis stands aside his eyes wet too.
"I love you Daddy," she cried into his shoulder as he let her go.
We both grab onto Anubis as we go back to Brooklyn House, leaving my heartbroken parents crying in fear and anger. Fear for my little sister's life and her future, and anger with Anubis and his choices.
