A/N: I'm so so sorry it has taken this long to update, I know this chapter is quite short, but I wanted to give you something after so long as I've been struggling with the biggest writer's block. I think this story is coming to a wrap soon and I will make sure not to leave a big gap between updates leading to the end. I'm sorry again. But anyway I hope you enjoy.

It had been weeks; weeks. And nothing. No murders that followed Hoyt's patterns. No leads, no clues; nothing.

Jane and Maura had earned a certain amount of respect for each other after the alleyway scene, they saw each other as being both vulnerable and strong in equal parts. Above all else, they trusted each other.

"Look, maybe he's given up." Frost said from his seat, idly sliding his pen back and forth along his desk. When he was answered with silence he looked up to see two sets of eyes of his partners looking at him. "Okay... Maybe not?" Frost cringed at the stupidity of his idea. Of course Hoyt wouldn't give up.

Jane rubbed her temples furiously, sensing a headache starting to form. Before she could utter a word, she felt soft hands land on her shoulders and start to rub and massage the muscles there.

Jane groaned in pleasure at the feeling of Maura's hands massaging her shoulder and neck. Jane leant her head back and felt Maura's breasts press into her. She had to remember that they were in a workplace and the dirty thoughts that Jane was having was definitely not appropriate.

"Jane?" Maura softly spoke, leaning down towards Jane.

"Mmm?" Jane murmured, lost in the amazing feeling of Maura's hands moving against her skin and loosening her tight muscles.

"Can I speak with you, please?" And with that Maura was walking swiftly towards the corridor. Jane opened her eyes and looked at her... wait was Maura her girlfriend? They hadn't spoken about it, in fact they hadn't even gone on a date. This whole Hoyt thing was areally a pain in the Lieutenant's ass. They hadn't even kissed since the time in the alleyway, only stealing glances here and there at work. Jane had only been to her apartment to have a shower and put on a new pair of clothes and then she was back at the precinct.

Ignoring the suggestive looks that Frost and Korsak were given her Jane stood up and followed Maura who was waiting patiently in the corridor. Jane smiled at her and furrowed her brow when Maura didn't return the favour, instead the blonde walked towards the elevator. Jane followed and looked at the blankness of Maura's face. This was the same face that she had when Jane had had the meeting with her on the first day of her job.

"Hey, Maur? I thought you wanted to speak with me." Jane said as they got in to the elevator.

"I do, but in my- the morgue's office." Maura replied, void of any emotion. Jane furrowed her brow in hearing Maura correct herself. I thought it was her office.

The rest of the ride in the elevator was filled with silence as Jane wondered what Maura wanted to talk about. Once they walked into the office Maura shut the door and walked over to her desk and opened her draw. Jane stood a couple of metres away from the desk with her arms crossed as she watched Maura fish out a piece of paper. Maura walked over and perched on the edge of the desk before handing the paper to Jane who took it without moving her eyes away from Maura's.

Finally ripping her eyes away from the blonde's, Jane looked down at the piece of paper and her eyes immediately zoomed in on the Royal Navy crest at the top of the page. Jane swallowed thickly and quickly moved to read the letter.

She felt her heart drop.

Jane looked up to see Maura's face as blank as before.

"You knew about this?" Jane choked out. Maura folded her hands in her lap and nodded.

"I was told by my father that I needed to return to my work at the hospital and that my work here was not doing any good anymore." Maura explained, keeping emotion out of her voice.

Jane couldn't believe this. The letter told her to step back from her work to catch Hoyt, to resume her work at the hospital or if that wasn't suitable then she had the choice to go back to the field.

"No good?!" Jane yelled, expecting a flinch from Maura, yet none came which only proved to anger the Lieutenant more. "So trying to catch a serial killer is doing no good? Bullshit!" Jane screwed up the piece of paper and threw it across the room before she started to pace like a wild animal. "I can't believe this! He's still out there!" Jane yelled, running her hands through her hair.

For Maura's part she just watched Jane pace across her room before sighing. "Jane, there are more people on this case, like Frost and Korsak, who will try their best to catch Hoyt. You are needed elsewhere."

"No. I'm needed here, Maura! This is who I'm supposed to be, and that... monster, did this to me! To my family!" Jane focused her anger on trying to get some sort of emotion out of the blonde.

"It was your choice to join the Navy, Jane. He didn't do this to you. You did this to yourself." Once Maura spoke those words, there was no hiding Jane's hurt and there was no chance Maura could take back those words and she knew it from the look of shock and panic in her previously empty eyes.

Jane stood there, fighting the urge to let her legs collapse and tears fall. Instead she did what she did best; she left.

"Jane!" Maura shamelessly called out as she rushed out of the office just in time to see the elevator doors closing. She leant her hand against the wall as she felt her legs weaken at what she had just done.

For the first time in years she freely let tears fall down her cheeks.

A/N: What's going to happen to our fav duo? When will Hoyt finally make his move? Stay tuned chaps.
