Chapter 4-Wishes

Sarah sat comfortably on the sofa, her head resting on her father's shoulder as they listened to her husband tell her little half-brother stories of the Underground. It was wonderful being back in her old home, it was comforting and relaxing.

After the little confrontation in the park, Sarah and her family went back to her childhood home and caught up on everything; her marriage, the Underground and the it was wonderful to finally have everything fall into place, with the exception of her step-mother of course.

"Sarah?"

"Yes, dad."

"Not that I didn't encourage it but," Robert began, unsure of how to put his thoughts into words, "when will Karen be returned?"

Hearing the question, Jareth sniggered and Robert frowned. Sarah felt a headache coming on.

"Well, funny you should ask," Sarah replied, sitting up and stretching out her feet to poke her husband in warning. "Toby's wish didn't have a time limit as he didn't exactly wish her away so, being Fae, we can take advantage and find loopholes to keep her for as long or short as we'd like."

"But Toby only wished for her to know what's it's like to live at the bog, whatever that is?" Robert lightly argued back.

"Yes," Jareth interrupted, "but 'to live' can mean any length of time. How long have you lived in this house?"

"Since before Sarah was born," her father answered going pale realising what his daughter meant by loopholes.

"And your daughter was eighteen when she left, so she 'lived' here for that length of time." Jareth continued to explain. "I promise we won't keep Karen that long but you now get the idea."

"Bloody hell," Robert quietly exclaimed and ran his hand over his face.

"Daddy said a bad word," Toby said with a grin, playing with a crystal Jareth had given him.

"Can Toby wish her back?" Robert asked, while silently kicking himself for swearing.

"No," Jareth answered, grinning. "Not unless he wanted to run the Labyrinth to get her back because then he would be admitting that he had wished her away. Wish upon wish gets complicated, we do not encourage it."

Sarah was glad that her King was explaining the situation, as she knew she would just confuse her father. Another reason was that she could sense her unborn children's magic beginning to stir and she wondered what mischief they would cause now.

As if they could hear their mother's concerns, the unborn royal children decided to have some fun and began to change the skin tone of their mother. At first it was subtle, as the Goblin Queen started to look like she had a slight tan, with it darkening slowly. When that go no real reaction, that they could sense, the twins decided that she would look better if she was blue.

Seeing her hands turn blue and then everyone's reaction, Sarah sighed and said; "The twins are bored."

Needless to say, everyone laughed, then laughed harder when Sarah turned orange and her hair changed to purple. The Goblin Queen again sighed and was just glad it wasn't anything worse.

Reaching over, Robert gently rubbed his daughter's rounded belly and smiled warmly as the twins kicked in response to the touch.

"They remind me of you," Robert said fondly as he looked at his grown little girl. "You would keep your mother up all night kicking away, give her heartburn and refused to cooperate during your scans. We didn't know if you were a girl or boy till you were born." He chuckled at the memory.

"You never told me that," Sarah said quietly, her tone coloured with happiness. While her Husband whispered quietly enough for only her to hear: "Karma, Sarah-mine." She made a mental note to get him back for that one.

"But after you were born, you were like an angel," her father continued. "You were so easy, we could take you anywhere and you behaved well. You slept though the night from six weeks old and very rarely cried."

As Robert told Sarah of her childhood, Toby moved to sit on his father's lap while Jareth removed his wife's sandals and rubbed her feet. Sarah sank deeper into the sofa and her skin returned to its normal colour. At that moment, their world was at peace. Love filled the room as memories were shared and laughter heard.

Returning to the Goblin Castle in a shower of glitter, Jareth the Goblin King and his wife and Queen appeared in their throne room to the most wretched stench. In the middle of the room, hanging upside down and hanging from the ceiling was Karen Williams, gagged and crying while the goblins danced around underneath her and used Karen as target practice for their chickens.

"Oh dear," Jareth exclaimed quietly while his Queen's anger was quick and sharp.

"GOBLINS!" Her single shout brought the whole room to a standstill. Every goblin froze, then slowly turned her their pregnant Queen.

"What the bloody fuck are you doing?" Sarah's voice was deathly quiet, her hair gently moving in the magical wind that was her own. Jareth took a small step back.

"We punish blondie witch," one goblin whispered in reply. "Queeny brother wished her here."

"My brother wished for her to know the bog, not to be hung like a light from my ceiling and used as target practice!" Sarah said, her voice still deadly quiet. "And why would you bring her here after putting her in the bog when you know I am pregnant and am sensitive to certain smells?!"

Every goblin in the throne room paled. They had not thought to consider their pregnant Queen when they brought the blond witch to the castle to continue to her punishment. As one they all fell to the throne room floor and said as one; "We so sorry our Queeny. We make it right." And in a burst of activity, they removed all the chickens, cleaned up their mess and aired out the smell.

Jareth snapped his fingers and Karen was cleaned up and placed on a cushioned chair in the corner of the room. He also placed a spell on her to keep her quiet and immobile.

Within minutes, the throne room was back to rights and smelt fresh and clean. The goblins escaped back to their homes before Sarah punished them and silence ruled the room once more.

Sagging in relief at being able to breath and having the room clean once again, Sarah smiled her thanks to her husband at helping sort out the room before moving in for a hug. Hold his wife always brought Jareth joy and he'd like nothing more than to help her prepare for bed, but there was some unfinished business watching them with quiet terror.

"Why don't you head up to bed, my precious," the Goblin King said, caressing her cheek lovingly. "I will be up soon." Nodding her agreement, Sarah disappeared.

Sitting in his throne, Jareth waved his hand which pulled the chair that Karen was sitting in towards him. Her look of terror increased.

"You are wise to be afraid," Jareth commented, quietly and with an air of boredom. "You have treated my precious wife poorly and insulted her in front of me and her family. I will not stand for it." Karen trembled as her fear increased.

"I once said to Sarah that her eyes can be so cruel," Jareth continued, ignoring the human woman's trembling, "just as I can be so cruel. But I will make you a deal, Mrs Williams. If you swear to me here and now, to treat Sarah with respect whenever she visits, I will send you home. If you do not, I will allow my subjects to continue their punishment somewhere else."

Lifting the spell that kept her quiet, Jareth waited for Karen's reply. The woman swallowed a few times before she tried to speak.

"I apologise for being so rude earlier and swear to you, I will treat your Queen, my step-daughter with the respect in the future." Karen's words were truthful, quiet and fear. Jareth was pleased.

"That wasn't so hard now was it," he sneered at her. "I'm so glad we understand each other. Goodnight."

Rising from his throne, Jareth moved to leave but was stopped.

"Wait, you said you would send me home," Karen squeaked, desperation colouring her voice.

"Yes, I did say that," Jareth said, looking thoughtful. "But I didn't say when." And with those words, the Goblin King left Karen Williams in the dark throne room, still stuck to the chair.
