When I was young, I danced on shattered glass
And when I should have cried, I laughed instead.
After all, no torture could surpass
The battles raging on within my head.

My body is a chrysalis, and ties
Me to a world I knew I should rescind
And fly away on wings like butterflies'
And scatter my afflictions to the wind.

But years pass on, though I would have them stop,
And ladylike became my way of life.
Before long, butterflies were bound and caught,
This lunar moth became a monarch's wife.

Outside me, no one feared a girl so weak.
Within me, the crescendo reached its peak.
