Chapter Four:

Love

Noun: An intense feeling of deep affection

Verb: Feel a deep romantic or sexual attraction to someone

Lavi walked down the street to Allen's apartment. This so wasn't a date. Definitely not. Lenalee had teased him for hours yesterday and earlier this morning when he had announced that he had invited Allen to go to the amusement park with him and she continued to joke about this was his and Allen's first date. Even Kanda made a few jabs. But this wasn't a date... Really, it wasn't. It was just two friends going to an amusement park and oh goddammit it wasn't like he wanted it to be a date. He didn't like Allen like that. Allen was his friend. His best friend.

Allen was the short little moyashi who had snow white hair and beautiful gray eyes was bullied mercilessly and was too short. He was shy at first but joked easily and had a sense of humor and blushed way too easily and who's hair shined softly under the harsh florescent lights in school and who had a temper shorter than himself but was kind and smart and looked absolutely dazzling when he smiled.

...This wasn't a date.

And he didn't want it to be.

Allen paced his apartment nervously. His guardian, Cross Marian, was currently out who-knows-where gambling his money away, which left Allen alone in the apartment he and Cross shared. It was nice enough, and plenty big enough for the two of them (and Allen's strange pet bird, Timcanpy, but that was a different matter). As of now, Allen was currently waited for Lavi to arrive and pick him up to go to the amusement park. Lavi wasn't late or anything, not even close, Allen just happened to be extremely nervous.

After all, this was the very first time someone had asked to hang out with him.

Cross had laughed loudly when Allen had told him that he had plans on Saturday (why he bothered to tell that man anything was beyond him) and the older man had laughed, called him an idiot, and told him that he was going out on a date. Allen had blushed furiously and told him that it was in fact not a date, but Cross had just given him this look of 'uh huh. Sure. I believe you, you idiot apprentice.' And then told him that he would be going out Saturday as well, and that Allen was lucky he was so 'kind' because now he and his 'friend' could have some alone time.

Well it was now nearly noon, Cross had already left to go gamble his money away, and Allen was still just pacing back and forth whilst silently praying that nothing would go wrong. Like Lavi wouldn't suddenly realize that he didn't want to be around Allen or he ditched him in the middle of a crowd. Or maybe he just won't come at all.

And at that moment, there was a knock on the door.

Lavi really, really hoped he had the right apartment. After inviting Allen yesterday, he had asked for his address so he could pick him up (another thing Lenalee and Kanda teased him about). Allen had told him that he could just meet him there, but Lavi had insisted that he would just pick him up seeing as Allen had no idea where the amusement park was, and that this was just something friends did (Lenalee had mocked complained that he never went out of his way to pick her up) and eventually Allen had relented and shared his address with the redhead.

Now, Lavi was knocking on the door and praying that he hadn't gotten the address wrong. But apparently, he hadn't, seeing as the person who opened the door was a bright-eyed Allen Walker. He was dressed as more casually than he usually was, with black jeans and a long-sleeved red and black striped sweater (A/N: Sorry, I'm not the best with clothing) although he still wore those white gloves, for a reason Lavi couldn't figure out why. But still, Lavi had to admit, in a totally platonic way, he looked totally adorable. Strike! worthy. His heart started to pound in his chest as he grinned at Allen, and the younger teen grinned back at him.

"So, Allen..." Lavi began, forcing himself to stop looking at his friend and actually speak. "You ready to go?"

Allen nodded, walking out of the doorway and locking the door behind him. "Yeah." He said, an underlaying tone of excitement in his voice that he tried to hide, but Lavi caught onto anyway.

So he really was happy to hang out with Lavi. Or maybe it was just the amusement park that got him excited. Or maybe it was both? Lavi wondered, as they started down the stairs and into the street on their way to their destination. Allen was far more talkative than he was when he was in school, and Lavi enjoyed every second that he got to hear Allen speak.

But it wasn't like he could blame Allen for being quiet in school. Their school was full of people who seemed to hate Allen and the last thing Allen wanted to do was speak out and get himself even more noticed than he already was. Lavi used to think that if he was getting bullied, he'd just laugh it off. But after watching Allen and what happened and hearing the things that were said about him... Lavi wasn't sure anymore. It didn't seem like the type of thing you could just laugh off all the time.

Allen's words from lunch the previous day echoed in his head. 'But I'm used to it.' Did this happen at Allen's old school too? Was that why he transferred schools? Why did he always wear those gloves? Who did he live with? Was there even anyone there when he picked Allen up? Why did he never stand up for himself? Why? Lavi wanted to know so many things about his new friend, he wanted him to smile. But they weren't close enough for Lavi to ask such personal questions. Usually, Lavi would say screw it and ask anyway, being overly friendly and joking about everything. But Allen was different. He didn't want to force Allen to talk about the hard things.

And so, he would wait. He would wait until they were close enough. Until they were such good friends where it just came naturally.

"Lavi?" Allen asked, his eyebrows scrunched in confusion and concern. "Are you okay? You've been staring off for a while now..."

The redhead flashed a wide grin. "I'm fine, moyashi." He grabbed Allen's hand before running forward. "Come on, let's go!"

Lavi ran fast ahead, dragging Allen along by the hand. So focused on getting Allen to the amusement park so they could go and have a good time and he could see Allen smile at him again, and laugh as they had fun, he didn't even notice the deep blush that bloomed across the younger teen's face as he stared at their interlocked hands.

They had finally arrived, and Lavi's heart was pounding as he saw Allen's face just light up when he spotted the rides and games. Lavi tried to pass it off as the fact that he had just run there, so of course his heart was pounding, but something told him otherwise. He ignored that little voice that called him a liar. Buying his and Allen's passes (which Allen had tried to refuse, protesting that he had his own money, but Lavi had ignored that) they walked hand-in-hand through the gate to the amusement park.

"What should we go on first?" Allen asked as he tried to soak in the sight of all the people and the rides, the games and the food stands (which he decided he would visit later), a smile on his face.

"Hmm..." Lavi pondered as if it was the most important decision of his entire life. "That." He answered as his green eye fell upon the roller coaster that had loops and turns, curves and drops.

Squeezing Allen's hand in excitement, he bolted forward, Allen running behind him while laughing at Lavi's childlike happiness. Meanwhile, Lavi decided that that laughter might just be the single most beautiful thing he had ever heard.

They had stood in line for a decent amount of time, almost too long, but they both had decided that it was well worth the wait after the ride was over. Allen had admittedly, been a bit afraid before they ride had started, seeing as he had never been on a roller coaster before, but he had easily decided that it was probably one of the best things ever.

The two males were currently standing at the kiosk that showed the photos that the camera took mid-ride. Both teens were blushing, albeit for different reasons. Allen was currently wondering how the hell his face managed to look like that and was dying of embarrassment at the thought that he had actually looked like that and there was photographic evidence, and Lavi was blushing for an entirely different reason.

In the photo, Allen's hands were up and his eyes were closed, his face scrunched in a mix of laughter and screaming. Lavi, however, also had his hands up, although in the photo he was simply staring at Allen with a soft look on his face, a small smile gracing his face. And there was proof. There was an actual photo that showed that he was staring at Allen. While Allen hid his blushing face in his hands and tried to figure out how he ever made that expression, Lavi secretly bought a keychain with their photo encased in it. It wasn't much, but he wanted to remember this.

Slipping the keychain in his pocket, he grabbed Allen's hand again as they walked off to figure out just what ride they should conquer next.

They had gone on dozens of rides -some more than once- and they were now sitting on a park bench, thoroughly exhausted. It was dark now, and they were laughing about what idiots they were, and Allen thought that the smile on his face might never end up going away. He had been smiling and laughing for hours now, and he couldn't remember the last time he felt like this. His heart felt light and he honestly just felt so happy, and he knew that it was all thanks to Lavi.

Lavi really was the best friend he could ever ask for.

"So what should we do next?" Lavi asked with a laugh.

As if speaking for him, Allen's stomach growled loudly. Allen blushed while Lavi laughed loudly, standing up and grabbing Allen's hand, forcing him to stand up as well. "I think your stomach is telling us what to do."

Deciding to get some cotton candy (Allen had not yet revealed the fact that he ate more than the football team) barely even noticing that they were still holding hands. By now it had just felt so natural, they didn't give it a second thought. Lavi wasn't sure if these feelings he held for Allen were platonic or not, or what even those feelings were. But whatever they were, there were a lot of them.

After standing in line for a few minutes, Allen walked away from the booth with a large stick of cotton candy, holding it with his free hand. Allen smiled, taking a large chomp of his cotton candy, devouring it within a few seconds.

"What the..." Lavi muttered in shock. "Where did it go?" He muttered in confusion. Allen was so... Small. Where did all that cotton candy go?

Allen just smiled widely and happily before pulling out his second stick of cotton candy that Lavi had no idea he had bought. Munching more slowly, they continued to walk together, walking closer to the ferris wheel.

"Lavi? Is that you?" A deep voice asked, and the redhead turned around to see a guy from their school. Lavi instantly recognized him as one of Allen's many tormentors. "What're ya doing 'ere?

Shit.

Lavi had turned around to face his peer while Allen stayed facing forwards, not turning around to look at whoever it was. "'Ey Lavi, man, you on a hot date?" The guy wiggled his eyebrows as he reached his arm around his girlfriends (who Lavi also recognized from school) waist. "I got one myself, ya know. So c'mon man, who is she?" He squinted at Allen, as if trying to figure out who 'she' was.

Allen's heart was pounding in fear, and Lavi was trying desperately to find a way to save his friend from this humiliation, this torment. "He and I are not on a date. He's my friend."

The guy scoffed, eyeing their still interlocked hands. "Don' look that way to 'e." He told them, before squinting at Allen again. "Ey wait. I know you." He said in a disgusted tone, pointing to Allen. "You're the new kid. The lil' freak." His eyes narrowed into a glare.

"Allen is not a freak." Lavi defended instantly.

He turned to look at Lavi, a disgruntled look on his face. "Defendin' your boyfriend?" He asked jokingly, before he squinted in consideration. "Wait... Yo bro, are yo' a faggot or som'thin'? Like... You're gay with the freak?" He scoffed, and made a face as if he was about to be sick, or perhaps had seen some roadkill. "I thought you were bett'r than that, man. But yo, he mus' be good in bed, right? It's always the quite ones who're slutty." He smirked, eyeing his girlfriend.

"Baby..." She whined, a pout on her lips. "Can we go now? I'm bored." She told him as she looped her arm through his.

"Sure babe, just one second." He replied, before turning back to Lavi and Allen (who was now facing him as well). "Well, fags, me and my baby have to go now. Gotta keep the girl's happy, right? Oh wait, you two wouldn't know 'bout that, now would you? Homos. I'd love to stick around, but I don't wanna catch your gay-itis."

"I'm telling you." Lavi began, his voice taking on an icy tone. "Allen and I are not-"

"Whatever. Don' matta to 'e."

And then he left.

As soon as he was out of earshot, Lavi turned to face Allen. Allen's smile had vanished from his face, as if it had never been there in the first place. The white-haired teen quickly removed his hand from Lavi's and was staring at the ground, shoulders slumped and visibly miserable. "Allen..." Lavi started, putting a hand on the younger teens shoulder.

This is it. Allen thought, tensing. He's going to tell me that he never wants to see me again, that I've ruined everything. That this is nothing more than a joke, he would never actually hang out with a gay freak like me.

"Allen... I'm so sorry."

Wait. Those were not the words he had been expecting to hear. Allen's gray eyes looked up from the ground and into Lavi's singular green eye, and his whole face just looked so... Sorry. The eyebrow that wasn't covered by his headband and hair was scrunched, and a frown was pressed onto his face.

"This never would have happened if I hadn't been with you, or if I hadn't dragged you here. I mean, I know you must be hurt and probably offended. After all, he implied... Things." Lavi continued, anger in his voice upon recalling just exactly what that guy had said about Allen. "And I'm sorry that he called you gay. If word gets around, you might never get a girlfriend." He laughed before continuing. "'Cause people are gonna think you're dating me instead!"

"That... Wasn't the part that bothered me." Allen muttered. "I just... Didn't like the way he was talking to you, that's all."

"So it didn't bother you, what he said?"

Allen gave a small laugh before answering. "Well, it didn't please me or anything, but I've heard worse. Besides, I can't really get mad, considering the fact that it's true."

Lavi blinked, trying to process his thoughts. "Wait... Allen? You're gay?"

The younger teen flushed, but responded nonetheless. "Well, yeah. Sorry if that makes you uncomfortable..."

"Uh no!" Lavi instantly responded, before realizing what an idiot he sounded like. "No! It's uh, it's fine. It's great, actually."

Allen stared at his friend, throughly confused as to why his new friend was so ecstatic over the fact that he liked guys. Before he could question it further, Lavi grabbed his hand and begun pulling him forward, his face the color of a ripe strawberry.

The younger teen didn't object to being pulled along, and he merely followed after his taller companion. They ended up in front of the Ferris wheel and the dark sky in the background made the lights on the large ride glow brilliantly like tiny electric stars.

After standing in line for a while, chatting about random things, the two males finally ended up sitting across from each other on the ride. When the wheel started to turn, Allen was marveling at the view around them, his mouth open and eyes bright.

The moon was overhead, glowing in it's waning form. A few stars twinkled in the dark sky, and the lights from all the other booths and rides made it seem magical. Letting out a sharp breath, he turned to Lavi.

"Lavi, isn't it just amazing?" He whispered in amazement, a smile stretching across his lips.

The redhead grinned back at him "yeah, it's beautiful."

Of course, Allen didn't know this, but in that moment Lavi had been referring to the other teen. Lavi couldn't quite wrap his head around it, but something right then made Allen seem absolutely beautiful. His pale hair reflected the shining carnival lights, and his eyes shined like shards silver.

That moment was absolutely perfect.

Of course, all good things must come to an end, and the ride creaked to a halt and the employee unlocked the small doors keeping them inside. The teenagers stepped out, smiling as they walked back to the entrance of the carnival. Somehow, Lavi's hand had become entangled with Allen's smaller one, their fingers intertwined and their palms pressed together.

It was nice, Allen thought, to be able to hold someone's hand like this. He'd like to be able to do this more often, preferably with Lavi. He liked the warmth seeping from Lavi's larger hand into his cold small one.

And hand-in-hand, they walked back to Allen's house. Of course, Allen had protested, saying that he could walk home himself just fine, but Lavi had refused, saying that he would be a proper gentleman. Although really, Lavi just didn't want to let go of Allen's hand.

Jokes and stories were passed back and forth as they walked down the dimly lit street, and Allen couldn't help but steal glances at the redhead. Lavi's hair was like a fire, warming his heart and suiting his fiery personality. But his eyes were like shattered emeralds, but to Allen they were worth much more than those deep green gems.

Eventually of course, it came time to part ways. Standing in front of Allen's apartment, it was then that he realized just how hard his heart was pounding. It was was if his heart was trying toi escape from his chest, and he took another long glance at Allen.

It seemed that the younger teen didn't want them to part either, as he was trying to come up with new interesting topics to talk about, a blush on his face. Both realized this, and Lavi flashed a bright smile.

"Well, I uh, better get going." Allen muttered, retracting his hand from Lavi's.

There was a pause before Lavi replied with, "yeah, uh, me too."

Allen turned to walk away, but at the last second he turned back to the other male, a wide smile on his face that reached his eyes and made everything in the world seem perfect. "Thanks for today, Lavi!"

And with that, Allen walked inside his apartment, a blush on his face when he realized how weird his smile must've been. But little did he know that it was that very smile that caused Lavi to stand outside the apartment just a little bit longer, his heart thumping in his chest so loudly it was like he had just run ten miles.

As Lavi turned away from the apartment complex while trying to tame his beating heart, he took once last glance at Allen's door, an image of that bright and cheerful smile engraved in his memory.

Finally walking away, Lavi was left with one thought. 'But if I glance at you again, will I fall in love with you?'

To Be Continued

Okay now whats with all this friendship crap? They need to hurry up and get together, like seriously. I knowwwww, I'm the author so if I wanted them together I could make them get married in a paragraph if I wanted to but sadly I can't do that yet but don't worry, there will be romance soon. I think... Now go review!
