Lyanna
Sitting at the dinner table in her usual spot in between Brandon and her father, Lyanna was sure she had never been more nervous for anything in her entire life. Telling Brandon that she was pregnant had been weighing on her all day and now that time had arrived, she wasn't entirely sure she could go through with it.
The usual Stark sibling rapport was absent from the table that night and Lyanna felt guilty for ruining it. She was acting strange, Ned was acting strange, and she was almost certain Brandon was picking up that something was wrong. Lyanna had been hoping that the meal would just end and that she could slip away, putting off her problems for a later date, but as soon as Benjen - the family's slowest eater - set down his fork for the last time, her father demanded that all of his children to remain at the table.
He looked her dead in her eyes. She was trapped. "Lyanna." Just that one word told her she had to do it.
Lyanna was still collecting her thoughts, trying to determine how she'd break the news when object of her trepidation spoke up.
"Lya? What's going on?" She didn't respond.
He turns to Ned. "And I'm assuming you know? You've both been acting different so can someone please tell me what's up?"
Ned lets out a sigh that it seems he's been holding in all night. "It's not really mine to tell."
Once again, all eyes in the room land on Lyanna. She was almost certain that there would be marks left on her lip from how hard she had been gnawing on it trying to come up with words.
Another minute passed with relative silence filling the dining room and Lyanna had almost forgotten her younger brother was even there until he spoke to her from across the table. "Lya? Is everything okay?"
After a deep breath, she was able to respond, finding it easier to talk to Ben than to anyone else. "Everything will be okay. I think." She made sure to only concentrate on Ben and no one else. "It's just that, I did something that's going to have some pretty major consequences for me. I just feel like a disappointment and I'm worried about people finding out. I'm worried about how Brandon will react mostly."
She chanced a look in his direction. He looked concerned more than anything. She could see how much he loved her just by the look in eye.
After another shaky breath, she turned back to Ben and continued. "I'm scared that he'll be mad at me, but I'm also scared that he'll be mad at someone else."
Benjen appeared to be entirely entranced in was his sister was saying. Barely above a whisper, he responded, "Who?"
"Oberyn." She shifted to watch Brandon again.
"But I thought he liked Oberyn." He turned towards Brandon. "Don't you?"
Brandon didn't even acknowledge the young boy, keeping his attention only on his little sister. Their nearly identical eyes staring into the others'. She didn't want to say it but knew she had to.
"Brandon, I'm really going to need you to not get angry. Just please be rational and don't overreact."
"Lyanna, are you pregnant?"
Her failure to react to his question was all the answer that Brandon needed and he was up and headed for the door before Lyanna could even process it. She ran after him.
She caught his arm just as was halfway out of the door. He spun around to look at her and for a second they just watched each other. By that point the rest of the family had joined them.
"Brandon, you are not to leave this house tonight under any circumstances."
Just then, Lyanna's attention was drawn to the consistent vibrations that had been present in her back pocket off and on all throughout dinner. Something told her it was important and she gave in and pulled out her phone. She froze, her hand falling from where it held Brandon back.
Now her father's attentions were back on her. "Lyanna Stark, put that phone away now before I am inclined to take it."
"I, uh, I think it's important." She was already dialing the number back. "I have 23 missed calls. From Elia."
"Lyanna, it does not matter who is calling. Hand me the phone."
"Dad, please." She turned to walk away but as soon as soon as she heard Elia pick up, the phone was swiftly removed from her hand.
"Hello, this is Lyanna's father speaking?"
She could clearly see his jaw clench and unclench a few times over the course of just fifteen seconds.
"I'll let her know. Thank you, Miss Martell."
He handed the phone back. "It would appear that Oberyn was involved in a car accident earlier this evening. According to his sister, he is currently in surgery at Citadel Hospital." Lyanna had never been more stunned. He looked between Ned and Brandon "I am going to need one of you to take your sister to the hospital."
Her entire world felt as if it were moving in slow motion. Without even waiting for an answer from her siblings, Lyanna instinctively moved outside and to her usual place in the backseat of Brandon's Jeep. Brandon offered immediately to drive but as they were making their way outside behind her, it was decided that Ned was the more level headed and calm at the moment so the responsibility should be his.
The trip to Citadel had been long and quiet. Lyanna had gone into that day expecting nothing more than to be yelled at by the person in the world she felt as if she connected to most. She wanted more than anything to find a way to break the news easy and in a way that would make Brandon sympathize with her. The idea of Brandon no longer being angry at her because Oberyn had almost died was sickening.
Once at the hospital, Lyanna's apparent shock fell away as she immediately jumped out of the truck and sprinted to the front desk to find out where Oberyn was.
She was instructed to go to the waiting room on the 19th floor where his family was waiting for him to leave surgery. With Brandon at her back and Ned parking the car, Lyanna nervously made her way to the elevator, realizing that she had no idea of the extent of his injuries or even if he would be okay.
She wanted to seem strong but gave herself away by chewing on her lip. No words were exchanged but Brandon lightly tapped her shoulder, causing her to turn towards him. They studied each other for a second before just resolving to hug it out. Any animosity that that was between them after dinner was long gone as there were much bigger problems to be attended to.
The ride up the 19 stories happened quicker she had been prepared for and the doors opened to reveal Arthur Dayne waiting on the other side.
Lyanna had assumed that the usual tension between them would be brushed aside in a time like this and tried to form words. "H-hi, uh..."
"Well it took you long enough to get here." He looked her up and down before glancing at Brandon behind her. "Seems like the least you could've done was get here quickly seeing as you're the cause of all of this."
Brandon moved to step forward, probably to start a fight, but Lyanna stopped him. Arthur pushed passed the two of them and entered the elevator without another word.
From a sign on the wall, Lyanna determined that the waiting room was down the hall to their left. She was terrified that Oberyn was badly injured and that he would never make a full recovery. She wanted the bad thoughts out but couldn't shake them. As she began to walk, Brandon stopped her. "What was that?"
She was pulled out of her thoughts."Oh, Arthur? He just doesn't like me." She shrugged. "Never has."
Brandon nodded. "Hm. Well are you ready?"
"I guess."
The waiting room was a depressing sight. Doran, Elia, and Ashara took up three seats at the far wall. It had been obvious that Ashara was the one doing the majority of the crying. Doran looked more angry than anything. Elia actually looked relieved that Lyanna was there.
She met her halfway into in the room and immediately pulled her into a tight embrace. It was a loaded embrace, seeing as Elia knew what her brother hadn't - that Lyanna was pregnant with his baby and that they needed each other then more than ever.
Her eyes watering slightly, Lyanna looked into Elia's. "What happened?"
She sighed. "Oberyn had been drinking. He swerved off of the road and crashed into a tree. He went halfway through through the windshield. I don't know all of the details or what they're doing to him in there really. He's been in in surgery for three hours now."
The tears that had been threatening to fall took that opportunity to spill over. "This is my fault isn't it? I had been ignoring him and he went and got drunk and this happened. I'm - I'm so sorry, Elia. This is all my fault."
Before even arriving at the hospital, Lyanna had already been scared. By that point, she was absolutely terrified that he wasn't going to make it and she wasn't sure if she'd be able to live with herself if the surgery wasn't a success.
