Frostbite was back, but (much to Unn's displeasure) she stayed close to the village. Unn tried to go flying but Frostbite had babies to take care of now. I was glad that Unn had to stay closer to town. She and I spent more time together which was something I liked a lot... but Unn wasn't so happy. Every time I would asked what the matter was, she would never tell me. Something was bugging her, then one day as I was doing my rounds, I saw the most crazy thing I have ever seen. Unn was "speaking" with Frostbite and Frostbite spoke back.
So that night I sat next to Unn as I tucked her in. I decided to confront the matter.
"Unn," I started. "Can you really understand dragons and speak to them?" Unn looked at me stunned.
"You believe me?" she asked.
"I want to," I answered. "But I need proof." Unn sighed. "Please, Unn give me a chance." Unn gave a thoughtful look then nodded.
"Okay," she started. "But you need to promise to actually give this a chance."
"Deal," I smiled as I held my hand out. We shook hands then I tucked her into bed.
The next morning, I told Unn to meet me by the forge where Gobber and Grump were waiting. She was very late because of the new babies, but she made it.
"Now Unn," I began. "Using Toothless, I have told Grump something. I want you to get Grump to tell you what I said."
"But Grump doesn't like to talk," Unn whined.
"Unn," I continued. "This is the test. Take it or leave it." Unn went to protest again when Frostbite bumped her and made a few clicks and trills. Unn sighed.
"Okay." she murmured.
She walked over to Grump and started to growl, click, and trill at Grump. He opened his eyes to her looked her up and down then goes back to sleep. She looked at me then went back to Grump and tried again. Grump turned his head from her. Unn started to tear up and raised her voice as if she was begging him to tell her. Grump just yawned and turned away. Unn started to cry and continued to try. It was heartbreaking to see her plead with Grump. Toothless was also getting mad, but he knew he couldn't get involved, but Frostbite was a different story. She screeched at Grump with glowing eyes. Grump finally groaned and clicked and trilled at Unn. Unn sighed in relief, wiped away her tears then looked at me.
"Grump said that you said you were wrong and that there is a way to talk to dragons." Unn said stiffly. I was shocked. She was right. That was what I told Toothless to tell Grump. Unn's face began to fall as I stood and said nothing. "That is what you said right?"
I was slightly crushed. My daughter learned how to communicate back and forth before I did. I didn't like it that she seemed to surpass me without many lessons from me. I turned away.
"Daddy, please," Unn begged. "Was I right?"
"I need some time," I said.
"Daddy," She cried again. "Please, Daddy!"
"Unn," I lashed out. "I said to leave me alone." I went to board Toothless when he shoved me away and growled at me. Unn knelt on the ground crying and Frostbite nuzzled her. "Toothless, I need time to think." Toothless started to click as he growled. I faced Unn. "I'm sorry, Unn." I knelt next to her. "You're right." Unn looked up at me with puffy red eyes and I melted. I took her into my arms. "Baby girl," I started. "Please understand, I never thought someone your age would know more about dragons than I do."
"Daddy," she whimpered. "I love you, but I just wish you would listen to me." I held her tighter.
"I will try," I promised as I kissed her head. "I will try harder." She continued to sniffle into my shoulder. "Hey," I started. "Think you can teach me how to speak like a dragon?" Unn looked at me and nodded. "Okay, how about tonight after supper?" Unn nodded again and I hugged her tight.
