Hi,
The name's Kya~Waterbender~Avatar. I hope you like this. I have been working on it for a while. If you already read this one go to my second part on my orig penname. Love you all!
Book One: Water
Episode 1: A Legend
There is a legend about the avatar but only a few know about this. My grandmother's mother told her the legend and now it is passed to me. It is said after a certain number of avatars have been born some sort of special event occurs. It was unbelievable to most so the legend died off slowly, only being kept alive by the few families that believe in it. I used to think that it was a bunch of seal blubber until I was born.
My birth came years after the last airbender was murdered by the Fire Nation. My mother died giving birth to me and my father was dead before my mother found out she was pregnant. With both of them dead I was given to my mother's mother, my grandmother. She raised me the best she could and I was given tales of my mother from childhood up until her death. However, I got no information on what kind of man my father was. I asked how he died only to receive a veiled answer that didn't answer, instead dodge the question. I tried the villagers but I received the very same answers or been ignored. After being ignored, and basically alone, I reside in my residence with my grandmother most of the time. Sometimes I venture out to interact with the only five people that didn't resent me and my grandmother; Sokka, Katara, Bato, Hakoda, and Kanna.
Three years from the day I was born, I felt a cool sensation flow through my veins and focused on a small patch of snow. I dropped to the ground in surprise as I found out I could bend the crystal clear element. Two years later I discovered the air around me moved in a different way than around anyone else. Without a thought, I started screwing around and the air moved with me. At seven years old, I found the first thin patch of ice and dug until I hit brown earth. With water and air on my side, I crumbled the earth with joy and made up my mind that I was the special event that was supposed to happen. Instead of excitement for these powers, I felt the fear of people finding out and word spreading. The last race to have an avatar was completely obliterated. With this thought in the back of my head, I kept my secret from everyone, including my grandmother. My name is Kya of the Southern Water Tribe and I guess I am the new avatar.

Snow cling to the soles of my boots as I trudge through the freshly fallen flakes. The wind bites my bare nose and cheeks as I try to avoid being near my grandmother today. You would think turning 17 is a special day that should be all about that person. Instead of it being about me, it is all about the wedding my grandmother is pushing between me and Sokka. Unfortunately for me, Sokka is the only 'man' in our village and this wedding is being used as a distraction from the ongoing war between the Fire Nation and other nations. If only I could bend time back to when we were children and Katara was just learning to bend when she accidentally water whipped Sokka in the butt.
I smile at the memory, happy to have them as my two lifelong friends. If it hadn't been for them then I would have gone insane years ago. This is the exact reason why I see Sokka as a brother and not a man. I have known him too long, as well as know too much about him, to ever love him as anything else but a brother. But because of us being so close, and the only pair old enough here, I wed Sokka in a few short days.
It is time the village cheered up, and if that means having to marry Sokka then so be it. Maybe some laughter will enter the village, even though they do nothing but ignore me. It's been a long time since any true happiness has come to the village. Our spirit left as soon as we didn't see the boats of our soldiers anymore...
Villagers scramble between igloos trying to prepare for the celebration, while I try to figure out why they would even bother. Probably a tribute to my mother, being that she was the favorite person in our village. Most of the village loved her like their own family and would do anything if she just asked.
I not only caused the death of the village favorite but also don't live up to the expectations they had from her. So I was rejected by everyone except Bato, Hakoda and his children, Katara and Sokka.
Having gotten used to the ignoring villagers, I use all my time to practice at least waterbending and airbending. When it's less cold I try my hand at earth, even though I can barely move a piece of frozen dirty. The one and only element I can never seem to grasp is fire. By nature I could be calm and go with the flow like air and at some moments I could be earth stubborn and unmoving. When it comes to fire, I don't have enough anger to create any real doesn't. Every single time I try to bend it, a little spurt of smoke pops in my palm.
Sokka and Katara managed to escape the village by going fishing in a small inlet a couple miles away. Knowing the craziness in the village and Sokka, they are going to be gone for a long time. Practicing for a couple hours, I left my little patch of ice on the cliff and made my way back to the village. I tug my parka tighter around my body as the wind grows stronger and the snowflakes bite at my uncovered nose. As soon as I get back to my igloo, I pick up the broom near the doorway and start sweeping the snow from the entrance of our home.
All of a sudden a small voice in my head tells me to look up and nags me until I do so. As soon as I do a never-ending column of pure white light shoots into the sky for a few seconds then vanishes. Thinking my eyes have to be playing a trick on my mind, I go back to sweeping the snow.
My eyes take in the white wall that guards our village from most of the wind that caresses the land of the South Pole. After sweeping, and doing a few other chores for grandmother, I decided to take a walk to the wall of our village and cross my fingers that Sokka and Katara have returned. Unfortunately, they haven't so I lean against the wall and try to think of what I should do next. That is until I see a small black speck growing bigger with every passing second. My eyes slowly focus better and the speck turns into a human. As the person comes closer I notice they sit atop an otter penguin? Afraid he isn't one of us, since we don't ride the otter penguins, I look around before bending a snow drift in front of him. The snow explodes as the person plows right into the drift. I ready myself to fight, even though they are probably more trained than I am but all the same, I have to protect the village. Before I can walk over to the drift a bald pale boy, with blue arrows on his skin, pops out of the snow and spots me.
"Hi I'm Aang and I'm an airbender." He says with a big, goofy grin sitting naturally on his face.
My eyes narrow on his form, trying to comprehend the gravity of what he just told me. The airbenders were murdered and their temples ravaged for anything valuable before I was even born. How could this boy's family evade the Fire Nation for so long? Before I can question him, a large furry animal emerges from behind him. I try to back away fast but end up tripping myself on a piece of ice and fall into the freezing snow.
"What is that?!" I ask, pointing to the massive creature from the ground.
"Oh, This is my flying bison, Appa." Aang says, throwing his arms up during his introduction.
What?! I start backing away from this crazy boy and his vicious looking animal slowly so I don't spook them. This animal is bigger than anything I have seen before, the biggest being a tiger seal. My eyes go back and forth between Aang and the animal, taking in the massive thing covered in fluffy looking fur.
"Appa won't hurt you." Aang says, patting the face of it.
"Appa?"
"Yeah, that's his name. Now come closer so you can give him a pat." Aang says, walking over to me.
Unable to back away fast enough, I look deeply into his brown eyes and see a young boy brimming with curiosity. I let out a sigh that I have been holding in and push myself off the ground. I close the distance between Aang and me, still wary of his Appa. The animal walks a bit closer to me and takes a deep inhale of the air around me. Before I can even react, the bison's tongue wets me from head to toe in one lick. Maybe it's from the relief or the irony of how I thought, instead of getting angry I start laughing the hardest I ever had before. I feel the hair on my head standing straight up as if my body was struck by lightning.
I trust the look in his eyes and stand still, letting, Appa?, come closer. He takes a deep whiff of me and sticks out his tongue. He takes his tongue and caresses all of me in one lick. Hearing loud laughter, I turn my attention to the ground and watch Aang rolling around in the powder white. His whole head starts colouring scarlet from both the snow and the amount of laughter he responds with. Just as I go to stop him, two figures emerge from behind the bison and walk straight to me. Katara goes to Aang as Sokka grabs my arm and pulls me into the village.
"Kya, stay away from this kid.'' Sokka whispers, checking for what I assume is Aang.
"Good afternoon to you too." I say, making sure the sarcasm is very heavily laced in my tone.
Instead of a response in words, Sokka pulls me closer so my eyes meet his.
"I'm serious Kya. Stay away from him."
My eyes glance over to Aang, who is playing in the snow with Katara watching him and laughing. I jerk Sokka so he can face the scene and change his mind about Aang's character. The boy couldn't be more than 15, thus unable to do any irreparable damage. Although he may harass the otter penguins by riding them.
"Because this boy looks so dangerous."
His eyes narrow in on mine before he stalks off to tell the rest of the village of the visitor. In only a few minutes, the whole village stands at the entrance to see who is visiting and discuss how they should approach this situation. They stay a far distance from the boy as he keeps playing in the snow with his bison. He sees the people at the entrance and flashes a bright smile that seems to confuse people. Tired from the preparation, the villagers decide to just let him stay in an abandoned hut for the night. In the afternoon they would decide what they wanted to do with him. With all the excitement today everyone decides to turn in early and prepare to get up early tomorrow.
*Morning*
I awake as the morning rays creep through the front flaps of my grandmother's and my's igloo. I rub my eyes until my sight returns to normal and stretch until every bone has popped at least once. I finish my morning routine hastily, hoping that Aang is still here because I have so many questions about the airbenders. I venture outside to find everyone already preparing once more and, instead, opt to look for Sokka instead because I can alway count on him being in the same place every morning. I walk through the village until I reach the watchtower Sokka built himself so he can watch for our warriors. As I near the tower, I see young children sitting in half moon while Sokka tries to teach them how to be a warrior. I say try because the children would rather pick their ears and talk to their friend instead of listening to Sokka. I know he is only trying to help but these children are young, five to seven, and don't understand how grave our situation is.
The children all run in one direction as I draw near him, leaving him with raised eyebrows and a bit of a pout. His pout leaves his face as he realizes I am walking towards his and is replaced with a sly grin. He takes out his boomerang then starts running at me with his 'warrior' face, in a poor attempt to scare me. I stand my ground, unwilling to budge from my spot because the moment I do he will chase me like a polar dog.
"You were always so easy to scare when you were younger." He says when he realizes I won't be scared.
"I learned a long time ago that you are like a polar dog. If I run you give chase but if I stand my ground you won't do shit."
He rolls his eyes in response and I laugh because I actually made Sokka, of all people, speechless. He takes a few moments before finally giving in and laughing with me. Once I finish, I look to Sokka and wipe the tears that formed when I was laughing. When I look at him all I see is the child I grew up with, the one person who has been with me through thick and thin. Someone who saw me cry alone in a corner and decided to be the only one to come to me and comfort me. I don't see the man that is supposed to be marrying me in a few short days. I just can't.
"Sokka, Please answer the question I'm about to ask truthfully. And you better remember that I know exactly when you are lying."
Sokka doesn't answer me at first, instead staying silent and narrowing his gaze on me then looking me in the eyes. He takes a good couple minutes before finally nodding to me.
"Sokka... Do you really love me?"
Sokka turns away from me as I finish my question and makes no move to even look at me. Before I can even go near him, a bang shatters the silence and draws our attention to the sky. A thin line of smoke mars the normally aquamarine sky and a bright flash of light sparks in the sky for a second before disappearing. Only one thing does this. A Fire Nation signal.
Hey guys,
I hope you enjoyed this first chapter. This is the rewrite and most of the mistakes should be gone. Leave a review so I know if I left any and how you think.
