Family Shapes

by Erin Griffin

Fandom: Orphan Black

Pairing: Cophine, but only really in passing.

Disclaimer: My first story for Orphan Black. I haven't seen the new season yet, but I know somewhat how it all goes down so far. This means that characters (especially Helena or Kira) may be out of character a bit. If I get things wrong, I apologise. Please pretend the story is in a slightly AU setting if it goes a little too much away from canon, okay?

"Cosima! You were supposed to keep her out of the kitchen!" Sarah protested.

"She saw the Jello box, so there was no stopping her. Plus, she still scares me," the scientist replied. Sarah knew this was a lie. Still, Cosima made no movement to claim her wayward twin, knowing that she wouldn't listen to anyone but the Sarah, anyway. Seeing as Helena sat down at the table next to Kira as soon as Sarah had snapped her fingers and pointed at the empty chair, Cosima let her attention go back to the TV where she, Delphine and Felix were watching How It's Made.

"Auntie Helena, wanna help me make shapes?"

Helena tilted her head, studying Kira as she always did, giving the child her full attention. "Shapes?" she repeated.

"In the jello," Kira clarified, pointing to the pan of the inch-thick green gelatin.

"We eat the jello. No shapes." She smiled as if to say 'silly girl'.

"The shapes make it more fun to eat the jello," Kira said. She got up long enough to reach for the star shaped cookie cutter, and handed it to Helena. Sarah intercepted the utensil and gave it back to the girl.

"She doesn't get anything that has the word 'cutter' in its title, got it?" she said. She place a hand on Kira's hair and placed a kiss on her forehead. She hesitated, and then ran her hand down Helena's hair and onto Helena's shoulder in an attempt to show she was kidding.

"I cut jello only. Promise," Helena said back with a smile. She then hunched over, her chin on the table as she stared at the sheet of jello.

Sarah considered this. "Fine. Do me a favor and don't fill up on it. We're ordering pizza, and I know you like the breadsticks."

"How many?" Helena asked.

"How many what?" Sarah asked, confused.

"Shapes."

"How many shapes can you cut?"

"I want to eat the shapes."

"Just eat one," Sarah said. "Kira can only have one and so can you."

"Okay Seestra. One."

"Well. That was easier than I thought," Sarah said under her breath as she watched Kira give the star shaped cookie cutter back to Helena. Kira had a gingerbread man shape, and after making three shapes in the jello, she switched with her aunt.

Helena grinned as she took the first gingerbread man shape and bit off the head. "Jello man," she said.

"Are you done making the shapes?" Sarah asked a couple minutes later.

"Yes," Kira replied, slipping out of her chair. Helena made three more gingerbread man jello shapes and then she nodded. "Wanna color?" Kira asked.

"I like to," Helena said, reaching out for Kira's offered hand and getting out of her own chair. The two walked into the living room. Felix tossed one of the pillows next to him at at the floor and onto Helena's shoulder blades once she had settled down with a princess coloring book.

"Brother Seestra," she said in warning, but she put the pillow under her regardless and began to color.
