Hello my quarantined companions!
I still do not own HTTYD in any way. Or this songs or the show it comes from; Seussical the Musical.
I was in this play back when I was in grade school and this song stuck out in my mind, and I thought it fit Hiccup and Toothless pretty well.
How can a day be so incredible, but so horrible?
In one day, Hiccup had successfully shot down a Night Fury, only for no one to believe him. So he went looking for it alone. It took him hiking through the forest all day, but he finally found it, tided up in the rope and bolas he launched at it, completely immobilized. But it was still alive. Hiccup pulled out his knife and was about to kill it, to finally make his dad and village proud of him, only to cut it lose and let it go. The worst the dragon did to him was pin him to a rock and roar in his face before fleeing the scene. The last thing the young Viking remembered after that was blacking out and falling to the ground. When he woke up a few hours later, it was getting dark, so he headed straight home.
The cherry on top of this big mess of a day was when he got back to his house. His dad was waiting for him. He tried to tell him he didn't want to fight dragons, but his dad told him he would be starting dragon training the next day. End of one-sided conversation.
After that, the chief and a few others left to go on another voyage to find the dragon's nest, leaving his only son and heir alone for at least the next few weeks.
Not feeling like sleeping, Hiccup went up to the roof.
Hiccup didn't know what it was about the sky he liked so much.
The clouds, sunrises, sunsets, the stars, the moon. It was all so beautiful. So… freeing.
Simply looking up at the sky allowed him a bit of freedom. To think and to be himself.
So many possibilities to think about.
Lately, what he most thought about was if he could go somewhere else.
He'd journeyed with his father to a few neighboring islands in the archipelago over the years, but those he would hardly call adventures. Just more villages full of big, burly Vikings, all looking down on him. Not much different from Berk at all.
Hiccup wanted to see more. There had to be more.
But not just more places. Better places.
New places. Places no one's ever been before.
But, sadly, the only way off Berk was by boat, and Hiccup got seasick during really long journeys on the ocean. If only he could fly. Like a bird.
Or, dare he even think… like a dragon.
Looking at the sky was great, but Hiccup would bet coins to crab cakes that actually being able to dive into it himself would be the most amazing thing in the world.
Getting away from Berk for an hour, a day, a few days, or even just for a moment, sounded pretty good most of the time.
Even if there were no people in these new places he imaged were out there, at least that meant he could finally be himself. With no bullies or disappointing stares whenever he walked by. No one telling him he wasn't good enough.
Hiccup liked his job in the forge, and he enjoyed Gobber's company – most of the time. And his dad, as distant as he was, he loved very much. He wasn't really friends with the other kids in his age group on Berk either. He got along with Fishlegs on occasion, but it never lasted. Fishlegs would rather be with Snotlout and the twins while they picked on him instead of being picked on with him. And then there was Astrid. She was beautiful and amazing and he really liked her, but she hardly gave him the time of day. True, she never picked on him like the others, but she never stuck-up for him or tried to be his friend. He believed that she ignored him mainly because he has never done anything worth noticing. Well, in a positive way. But if he could do something great, she would definitely notice him, and then maybe like him. As would his dad and everyone else.
All-in-all, he had a life on Berk, but it was still a lonely life more often than not.
On Berk, he pretty much felt alone. But he knew if he actually did leave, he would truly be alone.
If only he had a friend. A real friend. Some kindred spirit who could make him feel wanted on Berk. Maybe even escape Berk with him every once in a while.
Sitting on the roof of his house with his head tilted up, looking at the glittering stars and radiant moonlight, all these thoughts raced through Hiccup's mind.
He knew there was more out there. A whole universe to explore. But how could he do that alone?
Alone.
Breathing a dejected sigh, Hiccup's gaze fell down, onto the village that was his home but didn't feel like home.
Hiccup:
I'm alone in the universe,
So alone in the universe,
I'm a Viking, but they don't see it.
They all call me a misfit,
(Hiccup rolled his eyes and shrugged his shoulders, having to agree) Ok, call me a misfit,
If I stand on my own, so be it.
(Hiccup looked back up at the night sky, a longing smile slightly pulling at his lips.)
Wish I had wings,
Wish I could fly,
Away from Berk and far beyond the sky.
And one day soon, I know peace there'll be.
(Hiccup turned his head down again, but turned it to his right this time, looking at the forest. His mind thinking back to the Night Fury he met.)
One small voice in the universe,
One true friend in the universe…who believes in me.
O}*{O
Hiccup didn't think it was possible, but he not only found the Night Fury he almost killed, and almost killed him, but he may have found some common ground with the intelligent creature.
Seriously, the Night Fury, who he had named Toothless for his retractable teeth, was so smart, he could speak Norse so Hiccup could understand him.
And he didn't just talk, he sang a little too.
Toothless was the only Night Fury in his nest, so he too knew how lonely life could be without anyone you related to or even bothered to give a chance.
The Night Fury looked up at the darkening sky longingly. He missed being able to fly, thanks to being hit by Hiccup's bola-launcher. He also worried for the other dragons who would continue raiding without his assistance. The tyrannical Queen that ruled his nest made all the other dragons hunt for her. Giving her all their food, then ate them if they didn't offer enough.
He was different from them though. The Queen's influence didn't affect him like it did the other dragons. She couldn't force him to steal food for her, and he was too fast for her to catch. He didn't have to do anything. But he did. When the dragons started raiding human villages for food to sustain the Queen's hunger, he couldn't stand watching them be slaughtered as the humans tried to protect what they had.
So the Night Fury decided to help them.
During their attacks, he took out things like their catapults, weapons, and watchtowers. He was practically invisible in the night sky when they raided, and he never missed his intended targets.
It wasn't exactly to help them steal, but to help them not get killed.
He took some comfort in that he was protecting the other dragons in some way, but hated that it was still some sort of service to the Queen. And he also hated seeing the other dragons suffer under her rule. Even if the other dragons never showed any appreciation for what he was doing for them and didn't really treat him like one of them, he still didn't think they deserved to be killed; by the Vikings or the Queen.
But what he hated the most was that the other dragons just let her boss them around. True, what he did sort of benefited her, but he wasn't doing it for her. He did it because he believed it was the right thing. If he was able to fight her control, maybe the others could too. If they only tried.
As the sky turned orange with the setting sun, Toothless lied down in the grass of the cove. Hiccup had set up a little fire pit for himself and the Night Fury generously lit it for him with a gentle fiery blast.
Hiccup thanked his new friend as he too sat down by the fire. Instead of sitting on the opposite side of the flames, the lad felt comfortable enough to sit beside the dragon.
The two shared a look with each other—a friendly smile—before looking up at the embers as they floated up into the darkening sky.
Toothless:
I've been alone in the universe,
So alone in the universe,
My own species of dragon is dwindling. (Hiccup: Alone in the universe)
No dragon tries to do anything,
Not one dragon is fighting,
They don't have any way for hoping.
(Hiccup tore his gaze from the sky above them and back down to the Night Fury.)
Hiccup:
I understand, but you have wings (Toothless turned his head back to look at Hiccup.) (Toothless: I have wings)
(Toothless opened one of his wings a little and looked at it. While he still had them, they were pretty useless with half his tail fin gone)
Yes, you can fly (Toothless: I can fly)
Away from Berk
Hiccup+Toothless:
And far beyond the sky,
(Hiccup stood up, gesturing up to the sky with his arms spread wide for a moment before looking back down at his new friend).
And now this day, you have heard my plea…
Hiccup: One small voice in the universe,
(Toothless stood up too)
Toothless: One true friend in the universe,
(Hiccup reached out and held under Toothess' chin. The two looked at each other, smiling)
Hiccup+Toothless: To believe in me…

It was bitter work making a replacement tailfin for Toothless, and even more to get it working just right but Hiccup finally did it. He had a rigging all set up with a mechanism that allowed the tail to move. The only catch was, Hiccup needed to be there with him, controlling the mechanism with his foot, otherwise the tail wouldn't stay open at all.
So Hiccup also made a saddle so he could ride on Toothless' back.
The heir was nervous at first, but then again, this was what he wanted. To be lifted from the ground and dive into the sky, see new places and new things.
And now he could do all that, and he wouldn't be doing it alone.
Their first official test flight was a bit rough, but after Hiccup threw away his cheat-sheet, stopped thinking so hard and just trusted his gut—and Toothless—they were able to maneuver through the air and dodge obstacles like they were one single being.
And it was…amazing.
Hiccup had never felt so free. So invincible. So himself.
As Toothless soared over the ocean, Hiccup marveled to everything his eyes met; all the shapes in the clouds, small islands, sea stacks, waves, even the reflection of the two of them in the water when they glided close enough to the surface.
They were in this together. They were going to do this together. They weren't going to be alone anymore.
Hiccup stirred Toothless to fly higher, his focus on the sky.
Hiccup:
Now we have wings (Toothless: We have wings)
We both can fly (Toothless: We can fly)
Around the moon
Toothless:
And far beyond the sky.
You called my name and you set me free…
(Toothless looked over his shoulder, glancing up at his best friend—his rider—and smiled. Hiccup smiled down at him in return)
Toothless: One small voice in the universe,
Hiccup: One true friend in the universe,
(Hiccup gently placed his hand on the top of Toothless' head)
Toothless+Hiccup: You believe in me.

Astrid grabbed a hold of the front of Hiccup's tunic and pulled him to meet her lips. After a few seconds, she let go and pulled back.
Hiccup was in a slight daze. "I could get used to it," he said with a goofy grin on his face.
Astrid smiled at him, happy to see him finally up and about. She was so worried after the battle on Dragon Island was over, Queen Red Death exploded and she didn't know what had happened to Hiccup and Toothless. When Stoick finally found Toothless but with no sign of his son, he and everyone else feared the worst. She thought she had lost him. Only for Toothless to open his wings to reveal Hiccup tucked safely to him. Even if his left leg was beyond saving, he was alive. That was what mattered the most.
Seeing him walk out of his house on his new prosthetic made her so glad. But at the same time, she was angry at him for scaring her and the rest of the village so bad. So, naturally, she punched his arm before she kissed him.
As they smiled at each other, behind her, the other riders; Snotlout, Fishlegs, Ruffnut and Tuffnut, all mounted on their new dragon companions, landed. All happy to see Hiccup was awake and up.
Astrid turned to them for a second before turning back to Hiccup. She took him by the hand, holding it gingerly.
Astrid:
Now we all have wings,
We all can fly,
Around the moon and far beyond the sky.
Hiccup: Just call my name
Hiccup+Astrid: And I'll see you through
(Toothless emerged from Hiccup's house and came up to stand beside him, giving him a friendly nudge in his side with a purr. The blue Nadder Astrid had befriended glided up to stand by her as well, squawking and giving her a little nudge in the back. The nudge pushed her forward a bit, and she stumbled closer to Hiccup)
Hiccup: One small voice in the universe,
Astrid: One true friend in the universe,
Hiccup+Astrid: I believe in you.
Astrid pulled Hiccup into a hug. Hiccup hugged her back just as tight.
Not long after they pulled away, they both hopped onto the backs of their beloved dragons and went for a fun flight with the others.
And there u have it people.
I was already almost done with this one, so I just decided to finish and post it. Happy to update sooner then before.
Stay home, stay healthy, and stay tuned ;)
