Disclaimer - I do not own The Covenant or anything related to it. I only own my original character Tahlia and anything else that seems out of place.
I am so sorry for the long time between updates, I have been stuck on this story, but hopefully now my muses are back in full swing. This is basically a filler chapter, the action will commence in the following one.
So came the week of the championship swim meet, the Sons skipped school that day, choosing to use the time to prepare for afterwards. Caleb was updated on Tahlia's whereabouts by Sarah who had went to school that day just to keep tabs on their friend.
The Sons were currently sitting around Tahlia's room trying to figure out what Cade's endgame was.
"If he wanted to kill her, then why doesn't he just do it?" Reid snaps as he paces the floor, he was getting more frustrated with Tahlia's absence; the feeling to Use was stronger when she wasn't around.
"Remember what the book said, suicide is the only way. He can't kill her himself." Caleb reminded them, that thought being the only thing that brought them comfort.
"So, why doesn't he just ask her to do it? I mean, she's practically his puppet now." Tyler said softly as he sat on Tahlia's bed, one of her pillows cradled to his chest.
"Because she's too strong." Pouge answered, his fingers absentmindedly running over the infinity tattoo on the inside of his wrist. "Even under a spell, she's too strong for that."
"Well, even if this spell wears off tomorrow night, Tahlia won't remember anything that he's told her." Caleb said with a groan as he slammed his fist down on the desk. "Damn it, I wish there was someway to get her to remember. We need to know what he's planning."
"Maybe there is."
The four teens look to the door where Evelyn stands holding a book in her hands. "I found a spell that may allow Tahlia to retain her memories even after Cade's spell wears off of her."
"So it might not work?" Reid questions.
"It's a possibility." Evelyn replies.
"We gotta try something." Caleb says as he walks over and stands by his mother. "What do we need?"
So together with his mother Caleb gathered all of the ingredients for the spell and made what witches would call a potion. Not being a typical witch that dealt with spells and potions, Caleb could only hope that they had done it right; they could only wait and see if it worked.
The next night the boys drove to Hasting's Academy with Evelyn and Sarah, seeing Tahlia's truck in the parking lot gave them a sense of relief; they were worried that Cade might have caught on to their thoughts about the pool and forbid her from coming.
Together the group walked into the building that housed the pool, already there were tons of people packing the bleachers. Caleb noticed that they were allowing the competitors to do warm up laps in the pool and he breathed a sigh of relief. He had been wondering how he was going to slip the blue liquid into the water without anyone questioning what he was doing.
While Sarah and Evelyn took their seats, Caleb and the other Sons went into the locker room to quickly change. The sooner they got the spell into the water the better; the longer it was in the pool, the faster it would work.
Once they were changed into their suits they walked back out, Caleb concealing the small vile in the palm of his hand, and all of the them slid into the pool. Slipping the cork out of the vile, Caleb held it in his hand as he swam the length of the pool, allowing the motion of his body to disperse it. Once he returned to the starting point he got out and tossed the empty vial into the trashcan, then gave a thumbs up to his mother and girlfriend.
Pouge was standing at the back of the competitors, leaning against the wall when Tahlia came out of the locker room in her suit. She was braiding her long hair as she passed them, not giving them a second glance, as if she had never seen them in her entire life. He struggled to keep his face impassive, less to give away to the man sitting in the bleachers that they were up to something.
The competition started off with the boys competing in their individual swims, which the Sons won just as they had done every year before. But this year their attention was far from winning, which could be noticed in their lack of celebration.
Then it was time for the girls, Tahlia was up in the first race and the Sons all held their breath as the bell sounded and she dove into the pool.
The pool felt different to Tahlia as her arms sliced through the water, it seemed to be cleaning her mind, the heavy fog that had been clouding her was lifting. As she took the win her eyes caught Caleb's, her mind registering her brother's face. She climbed out of the pool and grabbed a towel, passing by each of the Sons and meeting their eyes in turn; letting them know that she remembered.
Three more races followed, each time her mind pushing aside the fog and allowing her to think clearly. By the time she climbed out of the pool, she knew that Cade had placed a spell on her and not only was it broken, but she had full memories of everything that had transpired the last few months.
Despite her elation at not being under his spell anymore, all she could register was the pain stabbing her heart as she thought about what she had put Pouge through. She wanted to go over to them and say how sorry she was, but a thoughtful glance from her brother told her to continue the charade that she was still spellbound.
After Spenser had been announced as the winner, and the swimmers had received their medals, Tahlia headed for the locker room. As she passed by her brother he secretly brushed her hand with his own, depositing something in her palm. When she got into the locker room she noticed it was a piece of paper, opening it she read what was written on it.
Welcome back. We need to know what Cade has planned.
Tahlia took a pen out of her bag and quickly wrote down what she knew on the backside, she didn't want to keep the note for fear of Cade discovering it. After a short shower, she changed into her regular clothes and walked out to find Caleb awaiting her. Seeing Cade standing by the doors, his eyes on her, she casually dropped the paper at Caleb's feet as she brushed past him.
Caleb waited until Cade and his sister had left before he leaned down and picked up the note. The other Sons appeared at his sides as he opened it and read out what she had wrote.
"Thank you all. He is planning to kill you all, just like in my dreams. I have a plan to stop him, but it won't be easy for any of us. In my locker you'll find a spell and a vial of my blood, you'll know what to do."
After reading that they returned to Spenser and found the parchment paper containing the spell and the vial with Tahlia's blood. Caleb unrolled the scroll and found a spell, clearly it had been taken from a book that Cade had since they had no luck finding anything themselves.
"What is it?" Pouge asked.
"It's a blood binding spell." Caleb answered as he looked over the words at the top. "This spell is used to bind loved ones to keep them from harm." Caleb continued reading the scroll realizing quickly what his sister wanted them to do.
"So what? This spell will protect all of us and keep us alive?" Reid questioned.
"No. Not all of us." Caleb replied solemnly.
"What do you mean?" Tyler asked.
Caleb sighed as he figured out what Tahlia was planning to do. "I mean that by binding us to Tahlia's blood we can't be killed. It's kind of like a Sleeping Beauty type of thing, if Cade kills us we won't die, but go into a deep sleep with all appearances of death."
"So how do we wake up from it?" Pouge asks, even though in his heart he already knows what Caleb is going to say.
"Tahlia dies." Caleb says, dropping the scroll to his side. "Because we'd be bound to her, if she dies, then the spell is broken."
"So we live and she dies? No way, I won't do it." Reid snaps, his eyes glossy with just the thought of losing Tahlia.
"This is the only way Reid." Caleb tells him, knowing exactly how the blonde teen felt. "This is what Lia wants, Reid, we have to do it. We have to trust her, she knows what she's doing."
Reid runs his fingers through his hair in frustration, "Then how do we save her?"
"The book." Pouge says catching onto what Caleb realized Tahlia was trying to tell them. "The Book of Damnation. The prophecy." He sees Reid and Tyler giving him blank looks and he sighs, "The prophecy says that she would sacrifice herself for her brother and the man she loved. Her love for them would be her end, but their love for her would bring her back."
"You think you and Caleb can bring her back?" Tyler asks, clearly upset with this whole idea.
"No," Caleb says with a shake of his head. "I think we all can, together."
"How do you know?" Reid questions.
"Because we all have a bond with her, one that goes deeper than any magic or spell ever could." Caleb says looking around at his surrogate brothers. "And I have faith in that."
