Two groundskeepers were finishing up their chores at the park for the day. The taller of the duo was raking leaves while the shorter was sitting under a tree, his rake beside him. The short raccoon, Rigby, groaned. The blue jay named Mordecai glanced at Rigby. "You know, this would get done much faster if you stopped being so lax," he said.
Rigby waved his paw. "Nah man, you've got this," he replied. Mordecai was about to respond when he heard an engine.
"Dude, stop being lazy for five minutes and get over here! Benson's coming!" Rigby's ears perked up and he scrambled to his feet. He grabbed his rake and scampered over to where Mordecai was and started raking as fast as he could.
Their boss Benson was driving on the path in a golf cart. He looked over and saw Rigby raking the leaves quickly. He rolled his eyes thinking about the innumerable times Mordecai and Rigby had caused havoc at the park.
It was a mystery to him why he's never fired them. He didn't mull over this thought long when it started to rain hard. Benson drove to where his two employees were.
"Get in! You did an adequate job...I guess."
Rigby dropped his rake and ran over to the golf cart. Mordecai rolled his eyes as he picked up Rigby's rake and ran to the cart.
He scooted next to Rigby in the back. Benson turned and kept driving as the two in the back shared dialogue about what video game they were going to play later.
Benson chuckled as they were debating. "Don't mar each other over what game to play."
The two friends paid no attention to their boss. Benson's thoughts drifted to when Mordecai and Rigby always put the park in danger. A little misdemeanor of theirs always led to gigantic problems. The house was an emblem, always being the first place to be in trouble.
Mordecai and Rigby had made a pact on their first day of work to never mess anything up. Of course, they'd broken that promise the very first day of work. Their first day of work, they had a stalemate during a game of rock-paper-scissors. They had tied 100 times and opened a vortex that almost sucked the whole park up. Benson had warned them it was an infamous game, but of course they didn't listen.
Benson's thoughts cleared when he saw Mordecai and Rigby run into the house. He stopped the engine and followed them.
The plants inside were wilting from a lack of water. Rigby had left the door ajar. Benson quickly closed the door.
Rigby held up a video game labeled "Strong Johns." Mordecai shook his head.
"No, dude. We play that one way too much. How about Dig Champs?" he said holding up a video game with two men on it, one holding a shovel and the other holding a pick axe.
"Please?" Rigby implored. Mordecai sighed and sat on the couch. "Fine...only because you said please." Rigby smiled and turned on the game.
Rigby reached for the controller for player one, but Mordecai grabbed it before he could blink. Rigby scowled and picked up the player two controller with a vindictive look. He sat on the couch next to his friend as the overture of the game came on the television screen.
Mordecai smirked when he saw Rigby was still mad and then set his gaze on the screen. Rigby shivered as he pressed the buttons on his controller. "I wish we had a hearth in the house." Mordecai nodded in agreement. Neither wanted to get up for a blanket, so they stayed on the couch shivering.
In a way, the two best friends' days were like a narrative story. They had little details that made them meaningful.
