Oh goodness...okay. Here's the newest chapter! A/N at the end! Sorry that it's a short one!
"Hello, Peter. My name is Charles Xavier." The older man reached out for Peter's hand, his grip firm but not uncomfortable, his eyes scanning Peter's face. "But you already knew that, didn't you."
Peter nodded. "I've heard of your great work, Professor. The only thing I don't understand is why exactly you are here?" He glanced around at the mutants that accompanied him. "Why are all of you here?"
Scott shared a look with Xavier before directing his gaze toward Peter. "We need your help, Peter. There's a situation brewing that is leaning toward the recreation of your accident that made you who you are now, but on a much larger scale. You were lucky that it did not negatively affect you, but it's guaranteed that the majority of others affected would not survive. Or they would lose themselves completely."
"I don't know what you want me to do since I really can't help you."
"Can't or won't?" Peter met the trucker's eyes. "This is exactly why I don't work with kids, Chuck. Not when it counts. When shit hits the fan they always look away. Don't wanna get their face dirty. Sorry, kid. We'll take care of it. Go back home and enjoy your life. Ignore who you are and what that means. Strive to be fucking normal. Try and think of us while we're risking our asses to save people and clean up your mess."
Peter stood still, his hands held tight into fists and his jaw clenched. Tony quickly jumped in, "C'mon, Logan. That was a little harsh."
"I'm just telling it like it is, Stark. Don't try- "
Logan was cut off as a web splayed across his mouth. Shocked, he focused back onto Peter, who had his arm still pointed at Logan, his face red with anger. "Shut up."
Peter flinched as Logan's claws popped out, quickly getting rid of the webbing. "Why should I, bub? Seems to me that I'm just speaking the truth. You're a kid. You've only been doing this for what, a year? Two years? That's not enough time to gain experience. Not enough time to truly know about loss."
"You have no idea what you're talking about."
Logan scoffed at Peter, rolling his eyes. "Enlighten me then. Make me realize just how hard you've had it. Make me believe that you have what it takes. I dare you."
Silence filled the room as Logan waited for Peter to answer; Peter, shaking in his silent rage, struggled to form words. After a few attempts he managed to gather his thoughts. "I have lost so much. My parents are dead, my uncle is dead, that one was my fault, and –" Peter's voice catches, his face twisting in pain. "I lost Gwen. I killed her. Her father made me promise to stay away from her. It was his dying wish! But did I listen? I kept seeing her. The one time I decide to do something for myself and look what happened; I couldn't save her. I couldn't –" Peter sank to his knees, his lungs betraying him, leaving him gasping for air. Logan stepped toward him, kneeling down and grabbing his shoulder.
"Hey, kid. I get it, okay? You've got guilt. Lots of it. But I've got a question for ya. Did you force her to stick around? Did you force her to go with you the night she died? Answer me, kid."
"No. No, I didn't."
"Alright then. It wasn't your fault."
"How do you know? How could you just say that? I might as well have killed her. I couldn't get to her in time. If I had just acted sooner – "
"Then she'd still be alive yada yada yada. Look, kid, it wasn't your fault. Blame those who are actually at fault. Your hands did not end her life. Just keep reminding yourself that."
Peter studied Logan's face, searching for something. "Who did you kill?"
Logan stiffened, his fingers digging into Peter's shoulder. "A lot of people. Don't really care to count anymore." He released his grip, stood up and backed off. "So are you in or are you out?"
Tony shuffled his feet, catching Peter's attention. Looking over he could tell that the man had mixed ideas on the subject, with his eyes constantly tracking between himself and the X-Men. Peter shakily stood, facing him. "What do you think, Iron Man? What are you going to do?"
Tony laughed, his hands fidgeting around a spare screw he had pulled out of his pocket. "Well, I guess I'm going to help the poor bastards. It looks like they'll need someone with a brain to counteract whatever's going on out there. My question is, does Spider-Man want to get physical or does Peter want to work with the brainstorming? I'm already assuming that you're going to say yes to helping them, since, ya know, you experienced this whole thing firsthand for the most part."
"Professor, where do you think my place is in all of this?"
Logan was quick to intercept, "Don't ask him for the answer, kid. He'll just give you some beehive analogy that makes no sense."
"Logan!" Scott glanced nervously at the Professor before focusing his covered gaze back on the burly man, "You shouldn't disrespect the Professor like that!"
"Awe, look at Boy scout, coming to the rescue. I'm just giving the kid some sound advice. From my personal experience, it's always better to go with what you think is right when it comes to shit like this." Logan focused his gaze back onto Peter. "Just choose what you think is right. Do you want to bash brains with this prick," an indignant 'Hey!' escaped from Tony's mouth at this, "Or do you want to flex whatever little muscles you have and rumble with the big boys?"
Peter paused, his eyes darting back and forth between the two superhero teams before coming to a decision. "Well, I think the best thing for me to do is stick with Stark, at least in the beginning. I might have an idea of something that we could put together that should help in putting down whatever comes our way. It's not a definite solution, but it will help us get there. If it works."
Tony laughed, slinging his arm around Peter's shoulders. "Of course it'll work! With our brains, JARVIS, and my money and lab we've got this covered! The only thing I'm worried about is how these guys are going to fair without Spidey or Iron Man covering your backs."
Logan snorted. "Shove it, Stark. We do just fine without you and your tin can. We can handle this just fine."
Tony jerked forward, his hand covering his heart. "You wound me! It's your opinion above all that I admire, Lumberjack! And here I was thinking that I won you over with those beers in the fridge. I got 'em just for you!"
"…Maybe I take back the tin can part. But we still do just fine without you," Logan shrugged, glancing towards the kitchen. "Now where are those beers?"
"Right that way, pointy man."
Logan scowled before heading for the refrigerator. Grabbing his prize, he hesitates before snatching a second one. He turned, lobbing it in Stark's direction. "Heads up, rich boy!"
Stark snatched it before it could land on the ground, his eyes narrowed as he glanced back at Logan. "Are you trying to fuck up this new carpet? Pepper would kill me if it got messed up again! We just finished remodeling after the whole Asgardian fiasco! No one has class anymore."
The Professor sighed, rubbing his temples before looking up at Peter. "Welcome to the team, Mr. Parker. It's going to be a long ride."
Okay you guys. I just have to say thank you so much to all of you who have followed this story so far! There are so many of you, and I just can't believe it! The only excuse I can really provide y'all with is that I just went through my first semester at university, and it was very hectic! There is never any rest for a theatre major! I am going to try and keep up with this story more than I have, you all deserve that, but I can't make any promises on a set update time! Once again thank you all so very much from the bottom of my heart for reading this story!
