Cheating Death

Murphy's Law states that anything that can go wrong, will go wrong, at exactly the wrong time.

Wally West found himself in one of those situations. An alien race called the Reach had tried to conquer Earth. When they were ultimately defeated, the stupid aliens just had to leave behind Magnetic Field Disruptors. If not shut down, the MFDs would serve their purpose- a cliché destruction of Earth.

Twenty-one had been placed around the globe. Twenty were offline. One remained.

The only problem was that the last one was too far gone to shut down. Now there was only containment.

Wally's uncle, Barry Allen (aka The Flash), and his time-traveling grandson Bart Allen (aka Impulse) had run to the North Pole to build up a containment field the only way they knew how: by running in circles.

Barry hadn't been sure if the top speed of the two of them would be enough. Cue Wally's arrival. The former Kid Flash may not have been as fast as the other speedsters, but he was going to do this, no matter what.

Unknown to the three, the rest of the Team had landed a short distance away. Immediately, Blue Beetle took to the sky, the armored jetpack that was his scarab carrying him through the air at its maximum speed of Mach 1.5. Superboy joined the speedsters on the ground, keeping pace with Kid Flash.

Jaime Reyes, the scarab spoke, the rudimentary containment is working. The energy will be dissipated in twenty seconds.

"Awesome!" was the response from said Jaime. "Can we go any faster?"

An increase in speed will result in system failure. Course of action not advised.

On the ground, Superboy and Kid Flash were busy dodging lightning bolts. The slower speeds of the two were attracting an electrical buildup that would likely kill one, if not both, of them. Superboy, with his advanced hearing and touch, could sense a particularly nasty bolt about to hit Kid Flash. With a grunt and a shove, Superboy tackled Wally out of the way, sending them both out of the ring, just as the energy from the MFD dissipated completely.

Flash and Impulse breathed heavily, trying to get air into their lungs. Artemis, the Team's sole archer, broke from the group and tackled Kid Flash as he and the Boy of Steel got back up.

"DON'T YOU DARE DO THAT TO ME AGAIN," she screamed. "You nearly killed yourself!"

"I had to, Artemis. I just couldn't stand by and watch the world burn. You know that."

At this, Artemis broke down, her rage spent. "I know. I just- I didn't want to lose you."

"I know."

"Why did you do it?"

"Can I answer that with a question of my own?"

"Sure. What?"

And with that, Wally got down on one knee, and pulled a small black box from the gauntlet on his arm where a protein bar was usually stored. He opened it.

"Artemis, I did it because I love you. I may be a goof-off, but I mean that with all my heart. Will you marry me?"

Artemis, for once, was stunned speechless. Nightwing, Dick Grayson, Wally's best friend, mentally pleaded, Say yes say yes say yes!

Artemis found her voice after several seconds. "Yes- YES!"

Wally got up, placed the ring on Artemis' finger, and they kissed, to the wolf whistles of the entire Team. Superboy would later swear that Nightwing's whistles were loudest of all.
