Neville's timing is off.
Luna's not quite ready to hear confessions of love at her wedding day. Not from her ringbearer. Or her freind. Same person, today.
"You do one of two things at weddings, you're either taking part of the kissing, or you're crying. I currently stand in the latter, because today I loose my best freind to some swoozer she likes better. But because she loves him, I'll be forced to stand back and let 'im have her while I fight for scraps of affection. I wish the both of you the very best. Now, I've to excuse myself to weep quietly,"
He leaves the banquet table and is proud of himself. His speech doesn't have a wisp of bitterness, tears or other negative emotions. He sounds like he was joking. Perfect. He's, in this moment, happy for her. He's sure he'll start sobbing hysterically soon. But for now, his timing is just off.
Sometimes, that's how it all works. People have a lot less control over their hearts than they'd like to believe.
His finished speech is the cue for everyone to start dancing, they've practiced enough to know and they spill into the area under the tent, dancing to a happy, mellow groove. Neville moves through them, just trying to get outside to his car so that he can cry in peace and peices. He's almost there when she grabs him, both her and the groom, some bloke called Rolph Scamander.
"Are you really leaving so soon?" Luna's voice is so sad, it almost, very nearly makes him want to stay, but not quite, because he knows that if he stays, he'll just start crying, and Luna doesn't need that today. He stops climbing the hill to his car.
"Yeah, Luna. I've got to cry, you know," He wishes he were joking, but already, the smile on his face is shaky and his eyes are burning.
"You really are fee to stay, I won't dance with her all night," It would be easier if this Scamander bloke were some disgusting pig. He could live with that better, because he could swoop her away dramatically. But Scamander is nice, has vaults upon vaults of money, and isn't nearly as ugly as he could have been. They're holding hands, but Luna isn't quite smiling anymore.
"You weren't joking, were you?" Neville nods no. He can't lie to her, so he smiles instead and turns to leave with awkwardness that belongs to his 14 year old self, not him at 28. She grabs his wrist again, and he really wishes she would stop, because his eyes are starting to burn and its kind of difficult to beathe now. He turns back anyways, and Luna looks entirely too hurt. He doesn't know why, she and her wonderful peculiarities knew he loved her even before he did. He just hopes she won't ever experience this sort of pain and regret.
"If you hurt her, I won't even hunt you down," That's right, he has yet to give Scamander the break her heart, I'll break your (insert object here) threat. Seems a good a time as any.
"I'll take her. And you won't ever get her back," he means it more than anything he's ever said.
"And you, don't be like that. You knew, Luna. Just go have fun, the both of you are married now" He still hasn't cried, and his voice cracks hen he says married and she looks sad and Neville hates that. She was never supposd to wear anything but a smile. She and Scamander don't leave, so he does. He opens the door to his beat up blue car, and he drives. The tears come so hard while he's driving, he has to pull over and call someone to pick him up.
But it's going to be ok, eventually. His timing is just off.
