Last chapter eek here goes!
It had been a week. There had been 16 dead and near to a hundred injured. Also many had been declared missing and although rescuers had pulled a few lucky souls to safety. The mud slide that followed the earthquake had changed everything in the space of a few moments, which was all it had taken to completely destroy the square and the surrounding houses. Some of which had been carried along with the mud. The mud had come to rest just below the settlement of Ered Luin, leaving a pool of mud and water which began to drain almost straight away. The dirt remained though and the mountain was bare of trees.
Thorin had seen that the sick were being cared for as best they could. The village of men had sent aid and had supplied food and medicine to the dwarves. Dis was healing, Oin had reset her leg and she was hobbling with the aid of a stick. A broken leg wasn't going to stop the most revered dwarrowdam in all of Ered Luin. Once they hadb returned home, Dwalin and Balin along with Thorin had helped to tidy the house and restore it to how it was before. It had taken some damage from the earthquake and had needed to have some repairs. This had been the case for most of the dwarves and everyone had helped each other to make the repairs quickly. Balin and Dwalin's own house had needed a new roof after being hit by what appeared to have been a tree. They had stayed in Dis and Thorin's house for the past week. Thorin was still struggling although he refused to rest for too long. His chest was still sore and Dwalin had caught him more than once grasping the wall and trying to take some long deep breaths in. Oin had re wrapped his chest and he had advised Thorin not to do any heavy lifting, which thankfully with the help of Dwalin and Balin and the severe telling Dis had given him, Thorin had so far complied. As for Fili and Kili, with some rest and medicine both had improved. Fili had indeed suffered from a fever and had had to have some rather terrible medicine which made him stick out his tongue in a very undignified way, certainly not behaviour that had befitted a prince, but as Thorin had found it so funny, he was not reprimanded for it. Kili had found it funny too until Oin had turned to him and offered him some of the same for his own fever. Kili had been kept in bed much longer than Fili and had only been allowed out of bed on occasions. His chest was sore and he had trouble breathing making Oin fear that his stitches had been torn. But with Fili helping his younger brother, Kili had rather got used to having someone to read to him and play with him while he was stuck in bed.
Thorin was pouring over some papers at Dis' kitchen table, he was attempting to organise a funeral for all those who had lost their lives, and he also wanted to reward those who had saved lives. Dis startled him as he looked up to see her placing a steaming cup of tea in front of him. He smiled gratefully and pushed the paperwork to the side to take a sip. Dis sat down beside him glancing at the work he had put into the funeral. All the dwarves who had lost loved ones had agreed with Thorin to have a joint funeral to remember everyone together. A knock at the door brought a scramble of feet and an opening of a door. Fili came barrelling out
"I hope you are not out of bed lad" The pounding feet went quiet and Dis smiled at Thorin.
They heard some whispering, which were not particularly quiet.
"Stay here, I'll go and see if it's Mr Oin and if it is you can pretend to be asleep" Fili's voice although quieter than Kili's giggling could be heard.
Thorin almost choked on his tea, from laughing and Dis shook her head not trying to hide her smile. Balin and Dwalin along with Oin came through the door.
"Well" said Balin "You'll be pleased to know we have almost a full roof, so we shouldn't be imposing for very much longer."
Thorin nodded, "How is the village looking today"
"Aye, we are getting there, the mud is hard to shift and the square will need to be fully rebuilt, we will need more supplies of wood, But it will get done" Dwalin had obviously been working hard as he was dirty and had a sweaty face.
"The funeral will take place at noon tomorrow. The whole village want to be there. Is everything in order" Balin asked
"It is, well almost" Thorin admitted.
Oin put his bag on the table and asked Dis how she was.
"I'm fine Oin, I just get tired quickly" Dis smiled.
"And the boys?"
"Ahh well I think they may be much better, obviously your medicine is working"
Oin grinned. "Im not sure they would agree, although Fili I think is healed although I will take a look at Kili's chest, perhaps he can get up for short periods, although not too much running"
There was a scuffle and a bang and then the house went very quiet. The adults glancing at each other smiles on Thorin's and Dis' faces. Confused Balin, Dwalin and Oin were not sure what had happened. Dis laughed.
"I think Oin that both boys are becoming quite bored with bed rest"
Thorin straightened his face and opened the door of the boy's room. Kill was lying on the bed pretending to be asleep and Fili was standing by the window pretending that he had not just knocked a plate from the nightstand which had smashed onto the floor.
"What is going on in here?"
"Nothing Uncle" Fili said with sincerity.
"Uncle" Kili unsurprisingly shot up and then his face giving away that he was still in pain, clutched the side of the bed.
Thorin held his arms out to Kili and he climbed slowly into them, earning Thorin a cuddle.
"Oin is here to see you" Thorin told the boys
"I told you Kili" Fili bristled but came round the bed and looked sheepishly at the broken plate,
"Go and get a brush to clean it up lad" Thorin said softly and Fili obeyed, disappearing out of the room.
"Come on let's get Oin to take a look at you" Thorin whispered in Kili's ear.
Before long Kili had been examined by Oin and given the ok to get out of bed but to take it easy. Fili had been given the all clear and hadn't unlike Kili had to take any more of the disgusting medicine.
Balin had been looking at the papers and tweaking Thorin's work. The order of service for the funerals was in place and the day was set. The rest of the evening was spent watching Kili attempting to keep up with his brother and the two boys playing by the fireside. Until Kili had crawled onto the couch by Thorin and twirling a piece of his hair in his fist, Kili grew steadily more tired and even Fili eventually gave in and Thorin carried them both to bed. Tomorrow they would be dressed in regal clothes and would stand by Dis and Thorin's side to remember those that had died in what would be remembered as Ered Luin's worst disaster.
The sun danced on the mountain tops the following morning and final preparations were put in place for the ceremony. Where it would have generally taken place in the village square, it was to be held just into the forest away from the devastation that had cost so many lives. The settlement of Ered Luin was small compared to other places in middle earth. After the fall of Erebor, the dwarves had scattered not all had followed Thror. But today the amount of dwarves that were there to pay their respects. The bodies of those that had fell were laid out in traditional dress and were being returned to the stone.
Dis and Thorin arrived. Fili and Kili holding hands between them. Dis had noticed Fili was very patient with Kili, his desire to hold on to him was greater than ever and while he had always been protective of his younger brother, it was now clear for all to see that Fili took his role very seriously. The pair were dressed in blue, the royal colour of Durin. Dis's hair was immaculately braided and the clasp in her hair, silver and with the mark of Durin on it, was identical to the ones that held both of her sons hair back and of course the one that resided in her brothers own hair. Thorin's hair was braided in the usual manner, the two braids that hung before his ears and his silver clasp that shone in the sunlight. Fili and KIli were dressed in identical tunics but Fili's hair held a braid while Kili's did not.
The funeral service was a sombre affair. Thorin gave thanks for the lives of the dwarrows that had been lost and he thanked all the dwarrows who had given time and labour to fix the houses of the homeless. He described how Ered Luin would rebuild and how they should never take the mountains sanctuary for granted. It was a long day for the boys, Fili and Kili had lit candles as had other dwarflings for the ones they lost, and the families of those who had fell were left to mourn privately.
Thorin had found the service incredibly moving. Dis had cried, one of the older dams that had helped her after the death of her husband, had been one of the lost and she had spoken to the family and had offered to do anything she could for them, of which they were very grateful, she had been one of those who had travelled to the caves the night of the earthquake, but had been swept away.
Dis thought about that day, she had not known where either of her boys were and the feeling when she had let go of Kili's hand, despite desperately trying to keep him next to her. She had thought she had lost them both. She watched them as they played Kili belatedly ignoring Oin's advice to not run around and he and Fili were chasing something she could not see. She smiled she had been lucky as had most of those close to her. She saw Thorin moving between dwarves and suddenly felt very proud of him. Looking at him, she saw a king. He had kept most of these dwarves safe. If he hadn't taken the dwarves to the caves, there may have been many more deaths. Those that had lost houses but had survived had been among the party in the caves. They owed their lives to Thorin's decision.
Thorin himself, did not feel the same way, he had tried to return to the caves but they were destroyed buried beneath the mud. They had been lucky Thorin felt that, they hadn't been trapped within the caves. The decision he had made in the caves that night to leave when they did had saved most of the dwarves lives. Thorin turned to see his nephews chasing something, he smiled. They were alive and had survived an earthquake and a mud slide. It would not be the last time they would experience the power of the mountains he was sure, but for now they were safe and that was what was mattered the most.
Ok so that's it! This was hard to write to try and tie the story up but hopefully I managed it. Thank you for following and favouriting and for all your amazing reviews. I may write an epilogue for this story so look out for it.
