CHAPTER 4: LUCKY OR NOT
"You do know that the whole point of being undercover is that you don't get noticed, right?" Clint asked Iris with a bright grin on his face
"No, the point in staying undercover is to not be known by the enemies, so I think I'm still on the clear." Iris replied as she balanced a pen by its tip on her pinkie finger
"You may be right but we both know that you'll be in trouble with Director Fury because of what you are doing." Clint reminded Iris
"And just what am I doing?" Iris replied nonchalantly
"Acing your classes, having a fan club, entering different academic and athletic clubs, you're making a name for yourself at your school. Your schoolmates are already calling you the 'Queen of Midtown Science' and you've only been there for less than a month." Clint said to Iris
"What can I say, I'm a good student." Iris shrugged
"Just please give me something to say to Director Fury once he calls in for a report. He'll be asking me why you got your face on every billboard inside the school." Clint begged Iris
"The sugar coated one that would make me look like a responsible agent or the real one that would make Nick explode and take his anger out on some poor SHIELD agent that just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time?" Iris asked Clint
"I'm tempted to say the first one but the Director would probably know I'm lying so better give me both." Clint answered
"Alright, the sugar-coated reason is that I'm establishing my cover at Midtown Science. Being popular has its perks and benefits that would make my job easier. The other not so pleasant reason is because I want to make it hard for Nick to erase my existence in that school once we finish this mission. God knows how hard it would be to cover the tracks of a popular girl that suddenly got out of school." Iris said with a small laugh
"And you wonder why the Director is always glaring a hole through your head." Clint said with a chuckle as he shook his head in amusement
"I told him that I would make his life hell if he sends me to another crazy mission. Posing as a student when I probably know more about the subjects than my teachers is a totally ludicrous mission in my opinion." Iris answered
"At least you've got something to entertain yourself." Clint told Iris "You have the Parker kid to answer to your every whim while I have to surround myself with lazy policemen."
"At least you get to go out once in a while; Natasha has to seat on a chair for several hours straight." Iris said to Clint
"Well, there's that." Clint agreed "So any interesting developments on Parker."
"He's a hormonal teenage male who is too good at acting." Iris replied
"Threat?" Clint asked Iris with a raised eyebrow
"Nope, he's a librarian. You know what they say about librarians." Iris said to Clint
"So he's a pretty wild guy under all those nerdy clothing?" Clint asked Iris
"Pretty much, yeah." Iris agreed "Acts submissive and introverted around large crowds but once the two of us are in private he suddenly turns to a flirt perverted sarcastic guy."
"You approve?" Clint asked Iris even if he already knew the answer
"Yes, at least I don't have to tone myself down around him." Iris answered
"Then would you do what Natasha said?" Clint asked Iris with a smirk on his face
"No," Iris replied "I may have roped him to act as my boyfriend but I would not be sharing the same bed with him."
"You two are already heavy on the making out sessions and don't you dare deny it, I know a hickey when I see one. Why not just lose your V-card as well?" Clint tried to reason with Iris
"You can convince me all you like but I would not budge." Iris said to Clint as she shot him a small glare
"Do what you want but let me remind you that no matter how silly it may sound-" Clint began to say before he was interrupted by Iris
"My virginity could end up ruining my mission. I know it already; Natasha had hammered that fact in my head after I refused to lose it."
"Just telling you that there will come a time that you would be sent in a mission where sleeping with the target is either unavoidable or a good way to finish the mission. Phil did it, Natasha did it, and even I did it. The only reason you haven't been sent to a mission like that is because of Phil."
"I know, why do you think I make myself his errand-girl whenever he needs something?" Iris said to Clint
"Well I guess it would be better for you to not sleep with the Parker kid, especially after what I'll be asking you to do." Clint sad to Iris
Iris looked at Clint in confusion and raised her eyebrow at him in question.
"Invite him over for dinner, Natasha and I need to confirm something."
"Good morning, babe."
Peter plastered a smile on his face and leaned down to connect his lips with Iris.
Almost a month has passed since their agreement and they have formed a somewhat workable routine whenever they are at school.
First, greet each other with a smile and a kiss before classes start even if there are plenty of people around them. Second, Peter and Iris could request the other to do certain things while they travel from room to room. Iris usually asks for Peter to hold her hand while Peter often asks Iris if he could place his hand around her shoulder or around her waist. No one could exactly blame him; he's a teen-age male so wanting to have a hot girl in his arms was perfectly normal. Third, they always take their breaks together. Fourth, if one of them would not be able to attend classes then they should contact the other to let them know before classes could start. And lastly, their relationship might be a ruse but they are not allowed to look at other people or even actively seek a relationship.
Peter was ready to hate Iris. Oh God was he set on hating her the day after they made their deal but he was wrong about Iris and he can't help but actually like and enjoy the company of the British girl.
Iris was clearly attractive with her silky black hair, full red lips, smooth pale skin, and bright green eyes. She was a beauty and that was all Peter thought she was, just another pretty face. He thought that he had her figured out, he assumed that she just used her pretty face to have everything go her way; it would explain her close ties with Tony Stark. But boy was he wrong.
Iris actually has a fully functional brain. She was smart, no she was beyond smart; she was a genius in her own right. Literature, Chemistry, Physics, she was able to top all of their classes easily. He was not able to hide his surprise when Iris looked at the advanced physics equation he was working on and engaged him in a conversation about it. He never thought he would ever be able to talk physics with anyone in his school, especially not a girl. And there was Iris who really got him excited with the terms and equations that she knew. Truth be told, her knowledge turned him on more than her physical attractiveness. He was sure to show Iris that as well when he grabbed her after classes and made out with her before they go their separate ways.
He also found that Iris and him were similar. They both wear masks to fool everyone around them. When you ask the opinion of Peter's schoolmates about him, they would all have the same answers. Clumsy, awkward, and a certified geek. If you ask his Aunt May and Uncle Ben then they would tell you that he is independent, reliable, and a good nephew. They all hold some parts of the truth.
Those things were just parts of who he is but if you dig further then you would meet someone who is sarcastic, snarky, and a tad bit perverted in his own right. He never let that side of him out. That part of his personality was only unleashed if he is certain that no one knows who he is. The internet is snarky Peter's playground.
Iris, on the other hand was also the same. She was known at the school as the hot girl with brains. She has a following of geeks and jocks, both of which she interacts with. She was respectful towards them but also kept her distance. But once they are gone, that darker Iris comes to play.
She's snarky, sarcastic, and perverted just like him and Peter had seen that Iris in action quite a few times. When some dumb jocks try to hit on her even if Peter's arms was wrapped around her, Iris would insult them in a way that they do not know they are insulted until the two of them are far away. When some of the geeks stutter or stumble around her, she would face them and tell them that they should man up and gain some confidence. And whenever the two of them are alone, Iris would gladly start kissing him senseless.
Maybe that was why they connected so easily. They were not lovers, they were not exactly friends, but a part of them recognized each other. They take comfort in the fact that they don't need to tone themselves down around each other. They can be as snarky, as sarcastic, or as perverted as possible without their companion judging them about it.
"Morning, babe." Peter returned Iris' greeting after their kiss
"Do you have something planned after school?" Iris asked Peter as she waited for him to get his stuff out of his locker
"Just need to buy some eggs for my Aunt May." Peter replied
"Good, I'll go with you and help you prepare then we will head to my place, my aunt and uncle wants to meet you." Iris said to Peter
"What?!" Peter exclaimed as he turned towards Iris
"My Aunt Nat and Uncle Clint heard about you and wanted to meet you; you better tell your aunt and uncle that you might eat dinner with us." Iris calmly replied before walking off when she saw that Peter got his stuff out of his locker
"Are you serious?!" Peter said as he walked fast to catch up with Iris "You didn't tell me about this! I'm not prepared for this, you didn't tell me this would happen!"
"I didn't know as well, okay?" Iris said with a roll of her eyes "My Uncle Clint told me that a friend from work saw us kissing when they picked up their kid from school, so he confronted me yesterday and asked that you join us for dinner."
"What will I tell Aunt May and Uncle Ben?!" Peter asked Iris
"Easy, tell them we're together." Iris answered
"Well that would be easy" Peter said with a scoff "I'll just go and tell them 'Hey Aunt May, Uncle Ben, remember when I told you I'm not seeing anyone well here is Iris and she is my girlfriend', I can see how easy that is."
"Do they know about me?" Iris asked Peter
"You're the only one I hang out with, of course they know you but all they know is that you're my friend, not my girlfriend." Peter told Iris
"Just tell them we're together, since you already told them about me they would just think that you were waiting for the right time to introduce me to them." Iris said with a roll of her eyes
"If I tell them that then they would insist that I have you come over for dinner as well." Peter sighed out
"So? Just tell me when and I'll go." Iris said to Peter
"Fine, I'll go but I better see those techs that you were talking about." Peter said to Iris
"Sure, I'll show you all the techs in my room." Iris said with a shrug of her shoulders
"You better." Peter said to Iris
"Don't worry about it Peter, I'll have them all laid out for you" Iris said to Peter "if you have to worry about anything then worry about the fact that you just asked to be alone with me in my room while my aunt and uncle are in the house."
"I did not ask you to do that." Peter said to Iris
"You just did." Iris said
"I asked you to show me your techs."
"Which just so happens to be in my room."
"I hate you."
"I love you babe."
"I'm home Aunt May, Uncle Ben!" Peter called out as he entered his home.
Peter held the door open for Iris and gestured for her to follow him inside.
"Were you able to buy the e-" Aunt May began to ask but stopped when she saw Iris standing behind Peter "Oh my, you didn't tell us we'll be having a guest Peter! How embarrassing, please excuse the mess dear."
"It's alright ma'am, it's our fault for not telling you beforehand." Iris assured Aunt May
"Even so, you shouldn't have to see our mess, we're usually not this messy but my husband decided to look into some of his old boxes." Aunt May explained "Now where are my manners, come on have a seat."
Iris smiled at Aunt May and followed Peter's aunt to the living room.
"Now what is your name dear?" Aunt May asked as she wiped her hands with a clean towel
"Iris, ma'am, Iris Rushman." Iris replied with a smile
"Oh no need to be polite dear, just call me Aunt May, everyone does." Aunt May said to Iris "Now excuse me for a bit and I'll just call my husband."
Iris and Peter watched as Aunt May walked out of the living room. Peter sighed before slumping on the couch beside Iris.
"Your aunt is nice." Iris said to Peter
"I know. She's the nicest aunt out there, no offense meant." Peter said to Iris
"None taken, my Aunt Nat is more like a teacher slash best friend if you ask me. But now that I met your Aunt May, I've been wondering if you are sure that you're related to her?" Iris teased Peter
"What does that mean?" Peter frowned at Iris
"Well, we both know that you don't have a nice bone in your body Mr. Parker." Iris teased Peter
"Well I think you're mistaken Ms. Rushman. I do have a nice bone in my body, thank you very much." Peter said to Iris with a small smirk on his face
"Then that means you're just not nice to me Mr. Parker." Iris said
"Now you're just lying because I know for a fact that I'm extra nice to you." Peter replied
"Now who is lying, I don't remember you being nice to me." Iris said as she leaned towards Peter, her eyes shining with a teasing glint
"I don't agree Ms. Rushman, pretend or not, I will always be nice to my girlfriend." Peter said, leaning towards Iris as well
"Then you better give me some proof that you are being a nice boyfriend."
"Did the fact that I opened the door for you just now not count?" Peter asked with a raised eyebrow
"This is your home, of course you'll be nice around your aunt and uncle." argued Iris
"What does it take to make you believe that I'm nice?" Peter asked Iris
"I told you already Peter, I need some proof." Iris smirked at Peter
Peter sighed mournfully and shook his head.
"I guess I have no choice then." Peter said to Iris
Peter looked at Iris and closed the small distance between them and giving a chaste kiss to Iris' lips. Peter delighted in the surprised look on Iris' face before any trace of it was erased, it was rare for him to catch his pretend girlfriend in shock and he loved every moment of being able to cause that emotion.
"What was that for?" Iris asked Peter, an eyebrow raised in question
Peter smirked at Iris and continued to place short chaste kisses on her lips.
"This is me proving that I'm a nice boyfriend." Peter said in between their kisses
Iris smirked at Peter's reply and leaned in when Peter was closing the distance between them once more.
"Well then, this is me believing you whole heartedly." Iris managed to say whenever their lips would part.
Peter gave a small laugh when he hears Iris' reply and leaned his forehead to hers. He stared into Iris' green eyes and smiled.
"I'm a pretty nice boyfriend, aren't I?" Peter asked Iris
"I think you're getting a bit big-headed there Mr. Parker." Iris teased him
Peter smiled at Iris and was about to lean in to kiss her once more but a coughing sound interrupted them causing the two teens to jump in shock and move away from each other. Peter looked up and saw his Aunt May and Uncle Ben staring at them from the living room doorway.
Aunt May had a surprised but pleased smile on her face. Peter could literally see her eyes shining in excitement. His Uncle Ben however had his arms crossed and had an eyebrow risen at his direction. Uncle Ben had a small frown on his face but Peter could see the side of his mouth twitching as his Uncle Ben tried to fight off the smile from blooming on his face.
Peter gave a sheepish grin and rubbed the back of his head. Peter turned to look at Iris and saw her biting her lower lip and smiling shyly towards his aunt and uncle. He nudged Iris only for her to nudge her back and gesture for him to take the first action.
"So, yeah I got the eggs you asked me to buy." Peter said as he internally flinched because of what he just said
"So Peter, who is your friend?" Uncle Ben asked Peter
"Yeah Uncle Ben, this is Iris. Iris meet my Uncle Ben." Peter introduced the two to each other
"Nice to meet you Iris. I remember Peter talking about you." Uncle Ben greeted Iris with a small smile
"Nice to meet you as well, sir. Peter told me a lot about you." Iris returned Uncle Ben's greeting
"Just Uncle Ben is fine." Uncle Ben said with a wave of his hand "Now Peter here told me about you but I think he has been leaving out some information, so Peter would you like to tell me what you're hiding now?"
"Uhmm, yeah." Peter nervously said as he waved his hands erratically in front of him "I was just waiting for the right time Uncle Ben, you know what I mean?"
Uncle Ben just raised an eyebrow at him and Peter turned to his Aunt May for help but she was just smiling at him in encouragement and was clearly waiting for him to spill the beans, so to speak.
"Girlfriend meet the relatives. Relatives meet my girlfriend." Peter said in resignation
"I knew it!" Uncle Ben exclaimed with a loud laugh "I knew it from the start! The only time you would ever willingly talk about a girl is if you're interested in her!"
"Uncle Ben!" Peter exclaimed as he blushed in mortification which only increased when he saw Iris trying to hold back a laugh and looking at him with a mischievous glint in her eyes
"Now Ben, stop embarrassing Peter in front of his girlfriend." Aunt May admonished her husband before turning towards Iris with a smile "But I must agree with my husband, Peter never brought any of his friends here, I guess he just wanted for his girlfriend to be the first one to enter our home."
"You're not helping Aunt May!" Peter complained
"Shush now Peter, it's my job as your aunt to make you look good in front of your girlfriend." Aunt May told Peter
"You're not exactly doing a good job Aunt May." Peter whispered
"Now why are we only learning about this recent development in your life young man?" Uncle Ben asked Peter
"I told you I was just waiting for the right time." Peter answered
"Now I understand that and all Peter but you shouldn't have done that." Uncle Ben admonished his nephew "I know you might not know it but you might have unintentionally made Iris feel that you were ashamed of her."
"Oh no Uncle Ben" Iris said, finally deciding to help Peter out "Peter told me about his decision to wait and I understand his reasons. I'm just glad that he talked to me about it instead of just doing things without me knowing."
"Now be happy you've got one understanding girlfriend Peter." Uncle Ben told Peter
"Oh stop scolding Peter in front of Iris." Aunt May said to her husband as she smacked him on the shoulder with the towel on her hands "Besides they're here now so that means that Peter finally decided to let us meet his girlfriend."
"Yeah, what Aunt May said." Peter agreed so that his Uncle Ben would stop "I'm sorry I just told you guys now, I'm insensitive, I'm irresponsible, and I need your permission."
"Permission?" Uncle Ben asked Peter "Are you planning to get married at your age?"
"No!" Peter exclaimed "That's so not it!"
"Ben, let Peter finish talking instead of just assuming things." Aunt May scolded her husband "Now why do you need our permission dear?"
"Well," Iris said, seeing as Peter was still denying his uncle's statement "My aunt and uncle would like to meet Peter so they invited him for dinner, if that's alright with you that is."
"Oh sure!" Aunt May agreed "But only if you also come here for dinner."
"I would love that Aunt May." Iris said with a smile directed at the kind woman
"Alright, you two girls chat while I help Peter get ready for this dinner and teach him how not to humiliate himself later." Uncle Ben said to Iris and Aunt May as he gestured for Peter to follow him upstairs.
"Are you serious?" Peter asked Uncle Ben
"Dead serious." Uncle Ben said to Peter as he walked up the stairs
Peter looked at Iris in defeat. Iris just shrugged her shoulders and motioned for him to follow his uncle. Peter sighed and nodded before getting up and following his Uncle Ben up the stairs.
Peter saw his Aunt May smile at him when he passed her and it only made Peter want to drag out the imminent conversation with his uncle.
This is exactly why he sometimes regrets going into the whole pretend relationship with Iris. Well there are those benefits that Iris and he do treat each other like they were really in a relationship; that was why it was not awkward whenever they flirt with or kiss each other. But then there were the downsides like the unwanted talk with the relatives and the constant speculations about how he was able to have a smoking girlfriend. Come on, he may be smart but even he can't make a love potion.
Peter saw his bedroom door was open; he shook his hands and body before breathing in a lungful of air.
'You can do this, Peter.' Peter encouraged himself
"Sit down Peter." Uncle Ben ordered his nephew when Peter entered his room.
Peter gulped and slowly walked towards his bed. He knew that whatever they are talking about would be important since his Uncle Ben was sitting on his computer chair. Uncle Ben never sits on his computer chair.
"Alright first things first, how long have you been in a relationship with this girl?" Uncle Ben asked Peter
"Almost a month now?" Peter answered
"Are you asking me or telling me?" Uncle Ben with a raised eyebrow towards him
"Telling, definitely telling." Peter quickly replied
"So ever since school started." Uncle Ben said to him
"Sort of, yeah." Peter answered him
"And I clearly remember you telling me that you have no girlfriend what so ever when I asked you about it before your first day at school. Were you lying to me Peter?" Uncle Ben said to him with a stern glare.
'Thank you Iris!' Peter thought to himself, good thing that her smart pseudo girlfriend thought about things in advance and was able to cook up a believable story about how their so called relationship boomed.
"No, I was not lying." Peter said to his uncle "I asked her to be my girlfriend on the first day of school so I actually didn't have a girlfriend when you asked me."
"And you clearly told me that you had no plans of dating girls or even of entering a relationship with a girl as well." Uncle Ben then said
"I was not sure if I would be able to, you know, actually ask her. I just sort of blurted it out and I didn't want to tell you anything in case I chickened out and did not ask her." Peter easily replied
"Alright, let's say I understand your reasons" Uncle Ben said to Peter "but how come did it take you this long before introducing her to me and your Aunt May? You know she's been waiting for you to actually bring someone home."
"I was planning on having you meet her but I wanted to see where the two of us are headed first. She's my first girlfriend and I want everything to be perfect. I wouldn't want to bring her to meet you and then find out that we wouldn't work out and just break up eventually." Peter answered
"And your conclusion?" Uncle Ben asked Peter
"I'm sure about her." Peter easily replied "I don't know if we will last but I know that I'm sure about her."
"Now that's what I want to hear!" Uncle Ben said as he stood up and clapped Peter's shoulders "I knew you have that Parker charm there somewhere."
'God, Iris you owe me so damn much' Peter thought to himself as his uncle decided to tell him stories about how he and Peter's father used the so called Parker charm back when they were younger.
AUTHOR'S NOTE: I know this was late but I have a good reason. For all of you who read my AN's you must know that I took a hiatus from writing before because of a super typhoon that hit my country. Right after my last update, a new storm was announced and my parents decided to relocate us to a place with higher ground so that we won't experience the same disaster as before. I can't promise that updates would go back to its usual speed because I now have to share my laptop with my parents who are always using it...
