Hans paced anxiously outside the room, waiting for news. He had been waiting through the night and most of the morning and he was sure Elsa was going to complain that he was wearing a grove in the floor with all his pacing. Every few moments he would turn and stare at the door, but any time he'd tried to go through it someone had been there to turn him away.

"Would you like something to eat?" asked Kai with a bow.

Hans turned to Kai in astonishment. "Do you really think I could eat anything right now?" he asked.

"Everything is fine your highness," responded Kai, "These thing take time. And they would tell you if there were any complications."

Hans merely nodded tersely and went back to wearing a groove in the floor.

An hour later, footsteps down the hall altered Hans to another intruder to his vigil. "Nothing yet?" asked Niels as he came up and clapped a hand on Hans' shoulder. Hans shook his head and Niels squeezed his shoulder sympathetically, "The first one is always the worst. You don't know what to expect and it always takes so much longer."

Just then, the door cracked open and a woman came out. Hans turned to her immediately. "Well?" he demanded.

She gave him a stern look. "Everything is fine." She closed the door behind her and walked right up to Hans. "Now you listen ter me mister," she said as she wagged a finger in Hans' face, "Royalty or not, yer not to go both'rin the girl. She's plum worn out. You'll be lettin' her sleep!"

"But everything is okay? Anna and the baby? And the wet nurse is already there?"

The midwife shook her head in disgust. "Foolish girl won't let her. Ain't never seen the like. A princess who don't want a nurse for the baby!" This time her look was a bit more friendly, "It'll be making for some long nights for you," she warned.

Hans sighed in relief, "If she's happy, I'm happy. Can I go in and see them?"

The friendly look disappeared. "I say no, but who am I?" she made a tsking noise of disapproval, "The girl says yer to come in right away. But don't you be buggin' her now! You 'member what I said 'bout sleep!"

Nodding in agreement, Hans didn't wait for her to finish before walking past her and opening the door to their chambers. He was through the sitting room and into their bedroom so quickly he was barely aware of the servants who were just finishing changing the linens and cleaning the room. Anna was lying in the middle of their bed, her hair damp with sweat and plastered to her forehead. She looked exhausted, but as he got closer Hans could see a peaceful smile on her face as she looked down at the small bundle in her arms.

Awed, Hans slowed down as he approached the bed. Gently, so as to not disturb them, he sat on the edge and leaned over to see a small face surrounded by blankets. He couldn't help but smile at the pure innocence in front of him.

"Are you disappointed?" Anna asked.

Hans looked up at her in shock, "What?"

"Are you disappointed?" Anna repeated.

Feeling mystified, it took Hans a moment to respond. "What on earth would I be disappointed about?" he asked.

"Because she's a girl," Anna explained.

A smile spread across Hans' face, "She is? That's wonderful!"

Anna furrowed her brow, "Didn't the midwife tell you?"

Hans shook his head, and gently reached out to touch the silky smooth skin of his daughter's cheek. His voice softened, "She just told me to let you sleep and that you didn't want a wet nurse," he explained.

Anna snorted and Hans looked at her in surprise, he had never heard her make such a noise before. "Why would I want someone else to look after and fall in love with my baby?" she said derisively. "Sorry," she corrected, "Our baby. Does that bother you?"

Hans shifted to face Anna and put his hand on her shoulder. "Anna," he said seriously, "I love you. I am thrilled to start our family and that everyone is healthy and well. I can't even begin to explain how happy it makes me that you want us to be connected with our children. There is nothing for me to be disappointed about, bothered by or anything of the sort." A teasing smile filled his face, "Now if you don't mind, I would like to go back to admiring this beautiful little girl that my wife has brought into this world."

Anna laughed tiredly, "Alright, alright. Then I'm going to take a nap then while you are admiring."

Hans reached out and carefully took the baby into his arms, "Sounds like a plan." As Anna settled down into the blankets to sleep, one more thing occurred to him. "Wait, what's her name?" he asked.

Anna blinked at him, "You want me to choose?"

"We weren't able to agree on anything before now," he shrugged, "So yes, you go ahead and choose."

"I love you Hans Westerguard," Anna said with an impulsive hug.

"And I love you Anna," responded Hans, "Now, before you fall asleep, what is our new daughter's name?"

She laughed sleepily, "How about Klara?"

Hans stood and bounced lightly to sooth the baby into a deeper sleep. "Klara," he murmured, "I love it." He leaned over to give Anna a kiss on the forehead, "Go to sleep my love, Klara and I will be here when you wake."

With a smile on her face, Anna snuggled into her pillow and closed her eyes. Hans watched her settle, then turned back to his daughter and started humming softly and tunelessly as he bounced her and stroke her velvety skin.
