It's been 2 weeks since the day Jacklyn landed on the shores of Arendelle. The doctors have been monitoring her progress, and so far she's just been in a near-coma state. Somewhere between a really long nap, and not being able to open her eyes.
Just last week, I was in her room with the doctors. Going over scans and checking to see if she was being well taken care of. The doctors were working around the clock to get her to regain consciousness, and while they are highly skilled, there is only so much they can do.
"I'm afraid if she doesn't come around soon, we may need to begin to consider... other options.", Dannika was the head of our medics, so I processed her words slowly. Something pulling me into a frenzy of perseverance.
I stood up from the chair, looking at the girl on the bed beside me. She looked so peaceful, almost like she was dreaming. "There has to something we can do. We can't just let her die here, she could have family that doesn't even know! I'll call my cousin if I have too." The sound in my voice was foreign, almost like someone else was speaking on my behalf.
Dannika lowered her head and drew in a deep breath. Seeming to battle with her morals, and her obligation to remind to be practical.
"Your majesty... I understand that you feel obliged to protect all that enter your kingdom... And I commend you on that...", she was treading carefully now, tossing the words around for a moment before deciding on the right ones to speak," But we have to remember that it is important to be rational in times like this. We can not continue to waste efforts and resources on a lost cause."
We were talking in whispers by the door before we made our exit from the room. I was caught between disbelief and a duty to put my kingdom first. I stared at her for a second, already regretting the decision I was about to make.
"We can give it a few more days." I was staring at her now, wondering who it was that decided I was fit to play god. The last thing I wanted was for a life to be lost when I could have done more to help. But it isn't just myself I need to look after anymore. I had an entire kingdom to look after now.
Dannika nodded, clapping me reassuringly on the shoulder before she exited.
I sighed and made my way back to her bedside. I had fifteen more minutes before I was due to meet with Kristen.
Staring contemplatively at the covers I mulled over whether or not I was doing the right thing. Whether or not I was fit for the title of King when I couldn't even handle a foreigner decision. But it was something about this girl. Something about the way she smiled at me when she saw me, like she finally understood a question she'd been asking her entire life. It was intriguing and frustrating.
And almost as if I were speaking out loud, she shifted in the bed. And my attention snapped to her immediately.
Her eyes creaked open, and she smiled when she saw me.
"Do you always watch girls sleep?", she croaked playfully.
I was at a loss for words. Not even two seconds of being awake and banter is her first response.
"No," I chuckled lightly," But your case has certainly been enough to keep me coming back. Are you alright?"
She shifted to sit up, and I instinctively put my hands on her shoulders in an effort to keep her lying down.
"Woah there tiger. I'm fine." she said defensively.
I withdrew my hands and held them up in apology, "You really should be resting. The doctors said that you'd be recovering from hypothermia and an acute pneumonia."
Her was out of the braid and fell gracefully around her shoulders. When she sat up she leaned against the headboard, and closed her eyes.
"How long have I been out?"
"A few weeks. You really should be resting. The doctors will want to be in to see you. Maybe run a few more tests. Are you warm? Do you-"
"Hold on a few weeks!? Whats the date?"
I stared at her incredulously, "29th of November. Are you sure you're alright? I can get you anything if you need it? Food? Water?"
Hands on her head, she let out a large sigh. "I missed it. I can't believe I missed it."
"I'm sorry? What did you miss?"
She stared at me in disbelief, " Of course! You wouldn't even know!" Like nothing had even happened she jumped up, put on her pull over and shorts and dashed out of the room.
"Are you coming?!" I heard echo from the halls. Racing after her I admitted to myself that I'd asked for this. Once I rounded the corner to the foyer I saw the large entrance doors open, and Jacklyn stepped outside with no shoes.
**Jacklyn's POV**
Bounding out the front doors I stepped into the summer air. This wasn't supposed to happen. I wasn't supposed to miss the transition from summer to fall to winter! And now it's almost Christmas, and everyone is going to be so upset.
Frantic, I searched for a clearing, or at least somewhere secluded enough that I could tell the truth without arousing too much attention. Far behind me, I saw him racing to keep up. His regal suit coat turning him into an odd sight.
"Where are you going!?" He was gasping for breath now. I motioned for him to come closer, remembering that he doesn't know.
When he caught up to me I grabbed his hand, and pushed him behind a building.
"Remember when I first came here? When I said I'd made it?" He was staring now. Confused as ever, but there was something in his eyes that made feel compelled to tell the rest of the story. Like I knew he would listen regardless of what came out of my mouth.
"I've looking for you, Elson. I need your help."
"My help? With what? I have an entire kingdom to look after, I can't exactly go running off on mysterious errands the second I please."
I stared him down, grinning slightly, I began "Unfortunately, we don't have the time for pleasantries, as what's at stake is larger than both of us, now." I paused, staring down at my hands. The staff. How did I not notice!?
I turned to Elson who had began to look at me inquisitively. He seemed to be questioning something, probably my mental state. But I couldn't prove anything if I didn't have the damn staff!
"Hey, um, when you guys pulled me into that place? Did I happen to have a really large stick with me?" His eyes were wide now, and he was definitely questioning my mental state.
"Are you sure you don't want to go back inside? It's almost lunch, and I know you've got to be hungry." He took his coat off, and draped it around my shoulders, "Why don't you tell me more about this staff over some hot soup? And we can try to get in touch with the constable to see if anything out of the ordinary has shown up on his doorstep."
Sighing heavily, I resigned myself to his suggestion. This was going to take a lot of compromise if I wanted to get anywhere.
