"She's not here!" the desperate cry of a woman could be heard over the sirens of the police. Her long brown curly hair that once shined was now straight and sticking on her face because of the pouring rain. Exhaustion could be read in her big dark chocolate eyes that once had a spark, but as her powers slowly left her with each passing moment, her eyes had become almost hollow. A man almost in his forties put his arms around her, trying to soothe his wife, but he was in the same state. He hadn't slept in days, but seeing the love of his life on the edge of cracking, he needed to be the strong one in that moment. He ran his fingers through his thick black hair and looked at the police officers who were searching inside an old deposit at the bay.
"Bruce, she is not here…" said an old man dressed in a dark grey suit and a light brown coat on his shoulders.
"You have to keep searching..." the man's voice faded away when he saw a police officer carrying a small white sweater with some red stains on it. Bruce looked at his wife and held her when her feet gave in. The police officers around them looked with pity at them and tried to encourage themselves that they will find the lost child safe.
"It's all my fault…" she kept repeating. She gazed back through the sopping wet strands of hair that hung in front of her face at the search dogs that smelled the dirty sweater. Bruce took her to the black limousine next to some of the many police cars.
"Stay here, I'll go talk to them. Patience, we will find her" he said with a soft voice and kissed her forehead. The silence in the car was pure agony. This is what she feared more, to be left alone with her thoughts. She opened her palms when she finally felt the pain caused by her nails. Dark thoughts started crossing her mind. The last thing she wanted to hear or see was her daughter dead. That moment she realized her fears could be real. The cold air struck her face, freezing her breath as she opened the window. Her eyes remained fixed on one of the emergency lighting on top of a police car, when a meow startled her, bringing her back to her senses. A grey cat with black stripes jumped through the window in her lap.
"Midnight…" she started petting the cat. The purring soothed her broken heart in ways that she could not explain. Her beloved husband gave her a glance, then followed the police inside the old deposit. Midnight meowed again and jumped out of the limo.
"What do you want to tell me Midnight?" whispered the woman. She wiped her face with the back of the sleeve, not caring that the tears and rain smudged her mascara more than it already was. With shaking legs, and with much effort, she got out of the car and followed the cat.
~Present~
A soft breeze entered the room through the open doors of the balcony, moving silently the long green curtains. A soft purring accompanied by the sound of a piano coming from the laptop filled the enormous room with green painted walls. A beautiful September morning caught me enjoying a home-made chai latte with extra cinnamon and a great movie that I simply adored: The Pianist. The purring stopped and Lore, my beautiful exemplary of the Egyptian Mau, stretched and looked at me with her golden eyes, disturbed by the vibrations of the phone and the fact that I wasn't petting her anymore.
"Yes?" I responded, with my eyes still looking at the tall slim character in the movie named Wladyslaw Szpilman.
"Leona, come down in the living room"
"Why?" I asked my father, tracing with my perfect French manicured long nails the lines on Lore's fur.
"We have guests." He said and hung up. I jumped out of the bed and looked down at myself, deciding that dressed in black yoga pants with a large white shirt was ok to greet the guests, well at least for me it was. I was not going to dress up for some uninvited guests. I left my room with Lore beside me. The long corridor till the stairways that took me to the main entrance was lighted by the sunshine that rushed through the huge windows till the ceiling. The only sound that could be heard was Lore's tag and the little bell that was at her neck. Approaching the stairways, I could hear someone talking. It was not my father's, but still, it was so familiar. I could hear a protective tone in his voice, calm, serious, professional.
"I'm sure she will be happy to see you. You haven't seen her in like what, 7 years?" said my dad. My curiosity was accentuated now.
Who was this person that I haven't seen in 7 years? I took Lore in my arms and jumped from the top of the stairs and landed gracefully two meters away from the two men. My father was used to how I made my entrance, but I startled the stranger. I put Lore down and looked at them. And I couldn't believe my eyes.
"Robin!" I jumped in the young man's arms. He smiled being a little surprised at my burst, but hugged me back.
"It's good to see you too, Leona" he said with a big smile across his face.
"You finally had time to visit us. It's been too long" His warm embrace ended shortly after and we followed my father in the living room. Albert came in, with two coffees and a chai latte for me.
"Alfred!" Robin hugged Alfred too, beating him lightly on the shoulder.
"It's good to see you, master Dick" he said with a warm smile.
"You're a little sentimentalist this morning" I said to Robin, taking a seat on the couch. As I sat in the lotus position, Lore jumped on my lap, with her paws scratching softly my knee after she was comfortable. Robin took a seat next to me on the couch and looked at the purring kitty.
"And who is this?" Asked Robin stretching his hand to pet her. He jumped a little when Lore tried to scratch him.
"Robin, this is my beloved little killer, Lore" I said petting the little devil as she was hissing at Robin.
"Don't worry Robin, it takes some time for the cat to befriend someone. It took me 6 years and I think I am starting to make a progress" A giggle escaped my lips at my father's words.
While Robin was talking with my father about the titans and how the business is going, I examined him from head to toe. His hair was not spiky, but straight and a little longer than he usually wore it. His blue eyes were looking at my father, giving me a glance now and then. He was not the boy wonder I knew several years ago. I think now he called himself Nightwing. He was dressed casually, blue jeans and a black t-shirt that was sticking on his muscular body. I wondered if his fighting has improved. Flashbacks of me kicking his butt whenever I had the chance came in my mind. It was not that fair for him, after all, I was the daughter of Catwoman and Batman, and he only received training from one of them.
"Leona?" I snapped out of my trance and looked at them. I think they had stopped talking for a while.
"So, what brings you here?" I asked him after I took a sip from the sweet drink.
"I took a little vacation" he responded and took his glass from the table.
"You, vacations? Since I have known you, you never took a day off. So, what's the occasion now?" Robin exchanged glances with my father.
"Dad?" I looked at him curious, with my left eyebrow up. He was standing with the laptop in front of him, with his legs crossed.
"As you know, tomorrow is our 25th anniversary" I looked at him with an obvious face. I had already bought their gifts weeks ago.
"Your mother and I are going to celebrate this by going to Europe."
"Continue" I said interested.
"And we thought that you could spend a little vacation on your own too" he said.
"Great, I could use one. I want to go to Bahamas, Tenerife then to Ibiza." I said with a big smile. My inner goddess was already with a Cosmopolitan in her hand, dressed in a bathing suit and chilling on a beach at the shadows of a palm tree.
"How about a little trip to California?" I looked confused at Robin's words.
"Robin could you...?" he just nodded. He stood up and left the room, leaving me and my father all alone, with Lore as well.
"Leona, we thought that you could spend time with the Titans." My inner goddess cracked the glass in her hand and started growling.
"Why?"
"Because Catwoman" I looked dead serious at him.
"You have got to be kidding me. I thought we dropped the subject. Mom will never agree" I said crossing my arms.
"Oh, but I did" I heard her voice. Dad turned the laptop to face me: video call, just great. My beautiful mother dressed in a white shirt, was looking at me with her big brown chocolate eyes She was smiling at me with her full red lips.
"Your father and I talked, and we reached an agreement that the best for you if you spend some time with the titans. You need to see what happens to the villains, and you need to communicate with someone more appropriate your age." Her gaze stopped on dad and smiled nonchalantly at him. "Bruce, could you leave us two minutes?".
"Of course, love" He left, closing the doors to the living room, but not before kissing me on the head.
"Sweetie, I know you. I grew a splendid young lady. But you are unique... Your impulses are just like mine. You see something you like, you take it."
"If we are talking about last month with the Hope Diamond, I put it back."
Everyone said it's impossible to break in the museum and steal it. Lex Luthor's company installed the security lasers and the sentinels that guarded the diamond. I just needed my flexible body and my black leather gloves, with built in diamond claws. The sentinels didn't saw me or hear me.
"You got this trait from me. But you have your father's sense of justice. You defeated lots of bad guys on your own. You fought them, and you found their hidings alone."
I laughed a little, remembering how dad stayed mad at me for a week that I found a nest of thieves at an old abandoned bay, and he couldn't. I was in a kind of a race with my dad since I was 17. We counted how many criminals we caught. So far, I had 26, dad only had 14. Mother said it was only fair to start counting from when I started to put on the costume.
"Here, you will not learn. And I don't want you to get hurt. AND you need to learn to control your impulses." She put the accent on the 'and'.
"Even though it was most of your father's idea, I had to agree with him." A smirk appeared on her lips.
"I want you to have fun and to show them what a true Catwoman is capable of, if you know what I mean" she said and winked. At that moment, Dad and Robin came in.
"Robin! It's good to see you. Leona is thrilled to go to Jumpy City. And I can't thank you enough for agreeing to help us" They could only see the joy and sparks in mother's eye, but I could see how she now had slit pupils masked by her dark chocolate eyes.
"It's ok with you, Leona?" I smiled at my father and looked back at the screen, at my mother. She nodded and gave me again that devil's smirk.
"Yes, I'll start packing. When do we leave?"
"Whenever you are ready" responded Robin with a warm smile.
"Bye mom, love you" I said blowing her kisses then ran to my room, with Lore close behind.
"Let's call Kelly, but first" I took a remote and pushed one little button that opened my closet, a closet so big that I could throw a party in it. I took my phone and speed dialed Kelly. We became friends when mother put me in a public school. Some bullies wanted to beat me, 'a helpless little girl'... Kelly and I ended in the principal's office after we beat up the boys. Later we became friends as Catwoman and Harley Quinn, when we both tried to steal the Diamond of Sierra Leone.
==Flashback==
"Just grab my hand!" I shouted. She was scared; I could see it on her face. She managed to steal the diamond and I followed her on the roof, where we had a fight. She was on top of me with a dagger and she would have stabbed me if I hadn't pushed her off. Yet I pushed her off the rooftop. She grabbed the edge of the roof and she was trying to hold on tight for dear life. The edge was slippery from the rain and I had to move fast.
"NOW!" I yelled at her. I could hear the sirens approaching, and some cops yelling at us to freeze... what choice of words to say to someone that hangs at the edge of a rooftop.
"No! I don't trust black cats. They bring bad luck!" My instinct was telling me to save her. She gave me a sense of safety and trust. I was brought back to my senses when I heard her scream. The cops opened the fire and shot her in the arm. Harley almost fell, but I caught her by the arm with my claws. I don't know if she screamed harder because she was shot or because I dug my claws in her arm. I pulled her up and she fell on top of me.
"You are a good kitty-cat" I heard her say and she patted me on the head. Still joking I see.
"Come on, let's get out of here before the cops catch us" I got up and took the diamond first, then helped her get up. She was in pain, and was starting to feel dizzy because of the blood loss. She was too weak to walk to my black motorbike that was two blocks away from the museum. I looked panicked around, not knowing where to go, as the rain poured on us.
"Leave me or the bad guys will catch us both" her voice was fading slowly.
"Not a chance. Stay with me" I took her on my back and ran at the edge of the roof.
"Hold on" I cried and jumped, landing in the trash. We managed to get away from the cops by hiding in a store next to the museum. I sighted and looked at her when the cops passed by the small souvenir shop.
"Everything was purrrrfect" I said and smiled at her. She looked at me confused.
"Leona?" My eyes got wider and I took a few steps away from her.
"What kind of name is that?"
"Cut the crap, I'm in pain and I feel like I'm dying... You are the only one that says 'perfect' in that way. After you broke that bully's nose in school and we were leaving the principal's office you said that the first time. I made fun of you and started making the r's longer at every word for a week" she said through gritted teeth, failing at masking the pain she was in. With that story she confirmed she was Kelly, because she was the only one who knew that story, apart from mom and dad.
Half an hour later we were at the mansion. I was lucky dad and mom were on a business trip, and Alfred was asleep.
"Don't yell that loud" I said and threw a pillow at Kelly's face, as I was trying to stitch the wound from the bullet. She was lucky it passed through her shoulder, otherwise she would be in much more pain. After some painkillers, and many bandages, we were finally relaxing, passing between us the diamond.
"I can't believe you are the kitty-cat" she said looking at the big diamond she was holding in her hand.
"Me? I can't believe you are Harley Quinn" I said as I poured two glasses of Cola
"We'll... Actually... my mom was Harley Quinn"
"Is your father…"
"The Joker? No, mommy found a nice guy who treats her right" she smiled as if she felt a triumph at this thought.
"My mom was Catwoman, but I kept her villain name"
"Just like I did" she said and took the glass I offered to her.
"I guess my mother was right: which resembles gather "she said smiling softly at me with her big blue eyes.
"Pinky promise kitty, as soon as we find our Ivy, we will become the New Sirens of Gotham" she held up her pinky.
"Pinky promise" I said and took the deal.
== End of Flashback ==
"What's up pussy cat?" I heard her singing on the phone, surely with a Cheshire smile.
"Nothing important... Except the fact that I am leaving town" I said
"What? What? WHAT?" she yelled.
"I'm going to live with the titans, in jump city" I took a pair of high-heels and boots and started putting them in their boxes.
"Why? And where the fuck is Jump City?"
"Kelly! Language!" screamed her mother.
"Say hello to your mother for me"
"Mom! Kitty-cat says hi"
"Such a sweet girl. When will she come over?" I heard her mother ask her.
"She is leaving town" now I made Kelly sad.
"A stray will always be a stray, sweetie. Just like her mother" she must be referring to the time my mother dumped the Sirens of Gotham for love and marriage.
"It's in California"
"IT'S ON THE OTHER FUCKING SIDE OF AMERICA! Who the fuck goes on the other side of the America?" she complained.
"One more filthy word lady and you are grounded!" I heard again her mother. I started throwing clothes on the floor. I was determined to take just what I need. I was going to buy clothes from the mall in Jump City.
"When are you leaving?"
"As soon as I am done packing..."
"And how much will you be staying there?"
"I don't know... weeks, months... " I answered throwing my make-up in one bag.
"Bitch, what's the matter with you?"
"That's it, you are grounded!" I started laughing and took a black box behind my long dresses from the charity balls and other cocktail-parties I have attended to.
"I said no because you'll come on an exclusive trip to Jump City, right in the heart of the Titans Tower. Champagne and caviar is on the house" I could tell she smiled at hearing this.
"Sounds like fun. I wanted to ask you... Will you be good or bad there?" I smirked and opened the box.
"Why miss Kelly, you should know better that I am a model citizen. I would never think of putting the suit on and stealing fine and expensive jewelry"
"That means yes." I took the mask from inside the box and looked at it.
"Still, I'll have to be a little careful, now that I'll be staying under the same roof as Robin and the titans. Listen, I'll call you later, I need to pack" I put the cover on the box and put it carefully in one of the big luggage standing on my bed.
"Ok. Wish the heroes good luck cause with a girl like you around it won't be easy for them. XOXO kitty cat" and she hung up. Two hours later, I finished packing, dressing up and applying my makeup. I sat next to Lore, on my bed, looking at all the things I will take with me. So much for the thought of taking what I needed. Lore started meowing and came in my arms.
"Mistress Leona, your car is waiting for you" I heard Alfred, looking a little surprised at all the luggage.
"Will this be all that you take? It doesn't seem that much" I giggled a little.
"Leona, the car is…" My father stopped to look at what I packed.
"You know, there are malls there"
"I know" I smiled at him, knowing that I was stubborn, and he had no chance of making me change my mind. I smiled at him, and when they took the last luggage, I rose up and went at the door, sighting.
"Take a good look Lore, because it's the last time you'll see this place for a long time" I said to her. She raised her head and put her paw on my cheek. I kissed her head and went out of the bedroom, leaving the door opened.
