Chapter five
Disclaimer: I own nothing mentioned in this story.
Peter Hale watches them with calculating eyes. He watches them piled onto the full size bed. Aiden is curled into a ball at the foot of the bed, his back is pressed into the wall and Kali's feet are hanging off the bed by her knees. Her head is pillowed against Aiden's stomach. Allison is wrapped around Lydia, her back pressed into the wall, feet tucked behind Aiden's back. Lydia has her arms wrapped around Erica, who has Boyd clinging to the she-wolf. They are a pile of limbs that seems to work. Peter hears Lydia's mom waking up. It was seven in the morning and them woman had gotten in around three.
The wolf smirks and then closes his eyes as the bedroom door open. He peeks out of his eye, watching as Lydia's mom stares at the bed then moves her eyes to him. She drops the plate of food she had and the crash sends the wolves into high alert. Boyd crouches in front of Erica and Lydia, his eyes glowing bright yellow and teeth bared. Aiden and Kali had jumped to their feet and their glowing blue eyes glare at Lydia's mom as Lydia sits up. "Oh god." Lydia's voice is the only sound. Allison sits up and Lydia's mom seems to lose it.
She shakes her head and Peter can hear her heart thumping. He opens his eyes. "You may want to calm down before you have a heart attack." His eyes flicker to Kali.
Lydia's mom makes to step back but Kali's hand slams the door shut. "Peter or Lydia will explain." Her eyes are still blue as she leans against the door.
Lydia's mom starts to hyperventilate. Lydia sits up and stares at her mom in confusion. Peter steps forward and his hand grabs her forearm. His veins turn black as he takes the pain of losing her breath away. The panic that had set in. She catches her breath and pushes him back before turning to Lydia. Her eyes flicker to Allison. "Allison?" Allison nods. "I thought you were dead?"
Lydia sits up. "She was." Her green eyes are strong, pulling strength from her pack. Gaining her normal confidence back.
Lydia's mom looks to her. "No Lydia. No." She shakes her head. "God I had hoped it skipped you like it skipped me."
Lydia looks at her. "What are you talking about mom?"
"You can talk to the dead? You're a banshee just like you grandmother." Her mom tangles her hands in her hair. "I didn't even see the symptoms."
"I wasn't born this way mom." Lydia watches her moms reaction. Watches the confusion. "I was bitten. By a werewolf. By Peter."
Sharp accusing eyes turn to Peter. He offers a smirk. Never able to hold back his sarcastic needs. "Let's just say I didn't expect a banshee. All I wanted was a smart obedient beta"
She moves forward and shoves Peter back. He hits the wall and his eyes flash blue before fading. Kali and Aiden barely hold back their growls as does Boyd. Peter was pack. Well close enough, but this was Lydia's mother. "You bastard! I had hoped Lydia would never have to deal with this! I saw my mom go through this. She died because of this. Suicide!" She paces the room.
Peter speaks up. "I don't think you have to worry about Lydia committing suicide. She has people that depend on her." He watches her eyes narrow at him. Literally. They would turn into rampaging monsters without their tie to her. She keeps them sane. Keeps them from embracing the darkness death has bestowed upon them. Lydia's mom stares at him and he smirks. "That's right. Everyone in this room sans your daughter has been dead before. We've touched darkness no-one can imagine."
Lydia's mom stares at her daughter. "You brought them all back."
Lydia stands up. "Yes. They're my pack. Mom. You can't tell anyone they're alive."
Her mom laughs and shakes her head. "What, you expect people not to notice that there are six dead people running around?"
Peter smirks. "Technically five. No-one knew Kali was dead."
Lydia scowls at him before looking to her mom. "The sheriff already has a plan."
Her mom blinks. "How many people know of this?"
Peter sits down and speaks before anyone else can as he messes with his nails. "The sheriff. Argent, Nurse McCall. The vet. The school counselor. The new history teacher. My nephew. One of the deputy's as of tonight." He looks up. "Congratulations you've joined the parents of supernatural creatures. Argent, Sheriff and McCall have little meeting every Thursday if you wanna go. They give out pam-"
"Peter." Lydia's voice is annoyed and he turns to her with a innocent expression. "Shut up." Her eyes turn back to her mom. "They can help explain everything better. They've dealt with it for years." Her eyes turn to Peter. "Is this why i'm a banshee? Because my grandma was one."
He shrugs his shoulders. "It's not exact science. Sometimes you are what is your bloodline is other times you're not." Both their minds think to Malia, his daughter. "The bite from an alpha doesn't automatically make you a wolf. It's who you are, the form you take reflects who you are. You could be a banshee both by heredity and because of who you are. It's not exact. Not all children of wolves are wolves. They can be human or sometimes other creatures. Nothing is solid. The wolf gene is just easier to latch onto. The body seems to accept it better. It is the most common next to human."
Natalie Martin stares at her daughter and then the other creatures in the room. She steps forward once she sees the blood covering Erica. Boyd's eyes flash and he lets out a low growl. Lydia steps between Boyd and her mom. "Boyd." Her voice is reprimanding before she turns to her mom. "She's fine. She was injured last night."
She stares at the teenagers sitting on her bed. "She's not dying?" Lydia shakes her head. "That's a lot of blood."
Peter's voice is sarcastic. "She did have a wendigo take a chunk out of her." Lydia turns to glare at him. "Hey, i'm glad she's alright but she deserved it."
Boyd's normal calm disposition is broken as he lurches forward and a growl rumbles in his chest. Peter's own eyes flash blue and her dare Boyd to attack with his eyes. Lydia steps between them. "Enough!" Sharp eyes turn to Peter and she shoves him back. "Shut up and quit antagonizing everyone." Her eyes turn to Boyd. "Go back to Erica." Kali watches from the doorway with bright blue eyes. Allison sits nervously on the bed before hopping up and away from the betas. Aiden leans against Lydia's desk and smirks. Lydia's green eyes turn back to her mom. "I. Do you want me to explain everything or Melissa McCall and the others?"
Her mom blinks and then Kali's stomach rumbles. Every eyes turn to her and she scowls at them. Lydia's mom looks back to her then to the glass that Kali is carelessly standing in. "I think i'm going to clean this mess up then make some breakfast." Her eyes flicker to Erica. "She's going to need to eat to gain her strength right?" Lydia furrows her eyebrows but nods.
Kali looks to Lydia before opening the door. "I have the glass." Natalie nods before heading downstairs. Her face is pained and confused but determined.
Kali sweeps up the mess as Lydia looks around her room. "I'm taking a quick shower." Her eyes flicker to Erica. "She can take one after me. Allison you know where the guest one is, show them and take one too." Green eyes meet brown and Allison smiles at Lydia's apparent need to give orders. The brunnette nods. Lydia leaves the room and Peter smirks at her retreating figure. "And don't say anything Peter!"
The wolf's smirk widens as he settles back in the desk chair. His eyes flicker to Boyd. "I can keep watch if you wanna shower." The darker wolf growls lowly and Allison sighs.
Allison shoves Aiden out of the room. "You can take a shower and then i'll show Kali." Her eyes turn to the blue eyed she-wolf. "Watch Peter." The she-wolf raises her eyebrow but smirk before turning her gaze to Peter. He sighs lowly and rolls his eyes.
Downstairs Natalie Martin grips the counter and takes deep breaths. Peter hops up from the desk chair and begins to head downstairs. Kali follows him and he rolls his eyes. "Already listening to the Alpha's girl?" His voice is sarcastic.
Kali rolls her eyes but they are confused. "Boyd would try to rip my head off in his state." She smirks as twirls a pencil on her fingers. Her toenails clack against the wood floor. The smirk widened before she tosses the pencil at Peter's head. He catches it and turns his glare to her. She shrugs. "You weren't much of a wolf when we were attacking you at the hospital. Thought i'd check."
His eyes flash blue. "I am a true wolf. I have unlimited power." He glowers at her and then huffs before moving to the kitchen. "You stupid former alpha."
"Pot. Kettle." Her smirk grows when she hears Peter growl.
He stalks into the kitchen and sits at one of the barstools. "Tell me you have silver in there?"
Natalie blinks her eyes as she turns around. "Um. Uh." She stumbles over her words before shaking her head. "I honestly have no idea."
Peter huffs. "That sucks. This one need a pedicure." He glares at her. "And her tongue cut out."
Natalie almost steps back before wolf biology kicks in. Stepping away from a wolf shows your prey. The same goes for werewolf's right? She stands her ground and swallows. Peter smirks at her as if knowing her thoughts. Kali's growl rumbles low in her throat. "I could gut you with my toes if you wish."
Peter buffs his nails against his shirt. "I'm not sure Lydia, or Natalia would like that very much."
Kali scowls before looking to Natalie. "I apologize for our lack of human decency. Your hospitality is greatly appreciated."
Peter laughs. "How long has it been since you've had human interaction?" Kali's thoughts flash to years under Deucalion's thumb. Running her own pack. Being pulled and distanced from Julia. Slowly Deucalion had put a fault in Kali's deep love for Julia. They'd grown distant and Enis had been there. Saying all the right things. Then she'd killed them all. Spent another few years training with Deucalion, preparing for something. Anything. It wasn't until Scott McCall came into existence that Deucalion seemed to come back to life. Kali is dragged out of her thoughts by Peter's next words. "I'm sure Ms Martin here wouldn't offer hospitality if she could help it." His grin is devilish. "We are monsters after all."
Lydia steps down. "But not all monsters do monstrous things." Her gaze bores into Peter before turning to Kali. "Kali I need your help. Allison is in the shower and I don't think Erica would appreciate Aiden or Peter helping her." Kali nods and steps towards Lydia.
She passes the girl and Lydia turns her gaze to Peter. Her eyes flick to her mother and Peter rolls his eyes. "I'll try and behave Master." His voice is sarcastic and Lydia rolls her eyes before heading upstairs. Peter turns to Natalie. "Any questions?"
Upstairs Kali bridal carries Erica to the bathroom. The girl blinks her eyes open a few times and Aiden holds Boyd back. The wolf calms when Lydia shoots him a look. Kali sits the blonde wolf on the toilet. "Erica. Erica" Lydia's voice is soft as she kneels down and her fingers cover Erica's cheeks.
Kali leans down near Lydia's ear. "Command her. You're an alpha. Embrace it."
Lydia looks at Kali in confusion. "Erica." Her voice is more commanding. Stern but Erica does nothing but flutter her eyes.
Kali sighs. "You need to feel it. You want it. Make it happen. Will it. That's all it is. A test of will."
Lydia takes in a deep breath and lets it out. "Erica." Authority rings under her voice and Kali shivers. "Wake up. Please." The last plea is soft but just as commanding.
Brown eyes flutter open. "L-" The word is cut off and the wolf gurgles as her vocal chords struggle to work.
Lydia lets out a sigh of relief and slumps, her head falls onto Erica's non-injured side. Cheek pressed into the wolf's ribs. "Don't try to speak." Green eyes look up into the she-wolf's brown. "You were injured. You need to take a shower." The blonde wolf nods and stands up. Kali catches her elbow as she waivers. They help her into the walk in shower. Kali turns her head away respectively as Lydia turns on the shower. Lydia makes a move to leave but Erica's hand stops her. She gives a silent nod and Lydia sighs in relief as she is given permission to stay. Erica's eyes flick to Kali and she nods as she leaves the shower and waits outside the bathroom door. She can practically hear Boyd scowling at Aiden. Allison sighing in the shower. Still enjoying the feel of hot water. Peter is downstairs with Natalie Martin and she listens to them, keeping an ear out in case Lydia needs her again.
"So you bit my daughter. Why?" Natalie's voice is accusing.
Peter rolls his eyes. "I wanted power. I sensed it in your daughter. Figured I could get what I wanted with her. I bit Scott McCall and he still defied me." He shrugs his shoulders. "I knew if I isolated Lydia. Separated her from the others. Played with her mind she would break into my hold. Follow me. But I underestimated your daughter. She's stronger than people gave her credit."
"And you don't want power now?" Natalie continues to cook but keeps her eye on the wolf.
He laughs. "Oh. I'll always want power. I'm what you call power obsessed. I crave it like an addict craves their next fix." He stares at her. "Do you know what it's like to have your life out of control?" Natalie stares at him. He gives her a sardonic smirk. "Being born a werewolf doesn't automatically give you control. You have to learn it. A fit of anger and I'd tear my room apart. Someone take the last piece of pie and I'd try to rip their throat out. The wolf always had control not me." He taps his fingers on the counter as the woman watches him with weary eyes. "I finally learned to control it. Force that anger to become a part of me. Controlled my wolf but then I was under the control of my sister. The alpha." His blue eyes look into hers. "Do you know what it's like to be ruled by someone who had seen your anger fits as a child. She kept me shielded. I was years older than her son yet he had more control than me. Except he didn't. She treated him like a god and I was the peasant. I love them but I had issues with control. So I did the only thing I could. I hunted down an alpha that was threatening our town. I challenged him to a fight." His eyes flash a bright blue. "He was strong but I had so much anger. I tore him to pieces. I made my own pack. My cousins joined me. It was Talia and me. She was a true werewolf. I was the thief. The power stealer but we were pack." His eyes grow soft. "I hate losing control. And one day a fire tore apart our house. I was inside with the children. Some were human some were wolves. But they were all pack. Do you know what it's like to feel someone die? I felt each of them burn until I couldn't tell if my own skin was burning or if it was theirs. I couldn't control my own body. I couldn't control the children. Tell them to run. The pain tore through me and I had nothing but their pain and their fear. Finally the fire was put out and I couldn't move. Their pain had paralyzed me as if their wounds were my own. I finally gained some control on the full moons. The only time I could move my body. I bit Scott. Then Lydia. Power is control for me. I crave it."
Natalie watches him with sympathetic eyes. "How do you get power if you aren't an alpha? Why stay with Lydia?"
He props his feet up on another chair. "By my self I am weak. Nothing." He flicks his fingers out and his claws lengthen. "But with a pack, I am stronger. We share pain but we also share power."
"Would you ever kill Lydia to become an alpha?" Natalie's voice is hard and she stares into his eyes.
He laughs. "Killing pack is like chopping off each of your limbs one by one. Once dead they leave a phantom pain or itch." He stares straight into her eye. "I already have enough phantom pains from my last pack." He shrugs his shoulder. "Plus I don't think I could ever get close enough to kill Lydia. She has bodyguards." Upstair Kali shoves her fist into her mouth as tears pool in her eyes. She feels the phantom licks of her former pack. The ones she had slaughtered. She can feel their pain. Confusion and betrayal. Outside the window the former Julia Baccari watches through the window as Kali breaks down again. Inside Lydia's bedroom Aiden rocks himself against the wall. Peter's words filtering through the walls. He feels the phantom licks of his former pack. He can feel Kali's pain and he struggles. He had cajoled his brother into this. They were the born twins. Merging during a battle with an alpha. They killed him and created their own pack. Then turned around and killed them all before the age of 18. They were 14 when they joined Kali and Deucalion. Kali was his second in command and they followed her like lost puppies. Across town Ethan clings to Derek as his brothers pain hits him. He sobs as pain laces through him. It wasn't real pain. Wasn't a open wound bleeding. It was invisible. Emotional. It hurt worse.
Lydia slumps against the shower wall at the sudden feeling of longing and pain deep within her chest. She shakes her head and helps Erica out of the shower. The wolf gets dressed and stares at Lydia silently. Her brown eyes look over the banshee. They open the bathroom door and Kali looks up at them, eye full of tears. Lydia's heart clenches and she struggles to decide what to do. Comfort Kali or help Erica. The decision is made as both Boyd and Aiden exit her room. Boyd hugs Erica to his body and Aiden helps Kali to her feet. The four of them head downstairs and she's left staring at them. Allison hugs her from behind and the strawberry blond collapses into the hunters arms. They cling to each other before heading downstairs. The banshee clutches at the hunters hand. Erica's eyes are on them as they sit down. Lydia's mom stares at them all. "I think I made enough." Her eyes turn to Lydia. "Peter tried to explain some of this."
Lydia rolls her eyes. "But he got distracted right?" Peter scowls at her and Natalie's eyes soften as they look to the one who bit Lydia.
Erica leans into Boyd's side as she watches Lydia. Allison shivers as she feels eyes on her. She catches the blonde's eyes and brown stares into brown. Understanding seems to pass between them. They were still nervous, odd around each other, but they would get along. Lydia was important to them. She was theirs. Breakfast is consumed quickly. Erica doesn't eat. Boyd looks as if he wouldn't eat but the she-wolf made him. Lydia's body trembles with pain. She wants to take it away. Help her pack. Help her firt wolf. The first one she saved.
Kali's body stiffens as she stares out the window. She relaxes but the others stare at her then the window. "See a ghost Tarzan?"
She glares at Peter. "no. Just thought saw something. It was nothing." Outside Julia waits behind a tree. Her body shakes as she waits. Kali stands up. "But I do need to run." When Aiden stands she turns to him. "Alone."
Kali's eyes turn to Lydia. Green stare into brown. "I don't control you. Just don't terminate the deer population." Kali rolls her eyes before she takes off leaving. Lydia watches her leave. Feeling a turmoil within the former alpha. Her thoughts were so messed up. Her emotions.
Peter stands up. "Well. I must be going. Derek needed help today on packing the loft. I've been volunteered apparently." He turns to Lydia's mom. "Would you like to accompany me Natalie? I'm sure we can get Argent or someone to explain it to you."
"Are you all going over there?" She stares at her daughter.
Lydia looks to her pack. "I was going to go with Erica to see Deaton first."
Her mom nods. "okay. Well, i'll go with Peter to talk with the other adults. I won't be home tonight. I have to work." She steps forward and pulls her daughter into a hug. Dropping a kiss on the crown of her head. "I love you." Lydia sighs into her mother's chest. Her muscles loosen. She hadn't had this in forever.
"I love you mom." Her voice is muffled as her face presses into her mother's shoulder. Emotion trembles in her voice. Her mom drops another kiss on her head before leaving with Peter. Aiden follows after them. His eyes turning to the four remaining in the kitch. He smiles softly before turning around and continuing after them.
Boyd clings to Erica and Allison stands beside Lydia. "Lets go see Deaton." As the four of them get in the car and drive to the veterinary office, the forest is alive with emotion.
Kali follows the scent after making false trails. She couldn't have aiden finding out about Julia, he'd kill Julia. Hurt her. Kali couldn't stand that. Julia was Julia. Finally she finds the woman. "What are you doing?"
"Nothing. Just checking in on some monsters." She tosses a knife in the air and catches it. Over and over again. Kali can smell the silver and wolfsbane.
Kali hides the hurt that hits deep inside her chest. She knows its the truth but it hurts so much. "We're not going to hurt anyone Julia."
Eyes harden. "It's Jennifer. Don't can me Julia!" Eyes flash white. "You lost that right!" Kali's face crumples and she bows her head, chin tucked into her chest. Julia, now Jennifer, clenches her jaw at the image. God this looked so much like her Kali. But it wasn't her Kali. Her Kali had yellow eyes, a bright smile. Not a killer's blue and sardonic smirks. She never had blood coating her hands and feet. She never had a phantom pack clinging to her.
"I know. And i'm sorry." Kali's voice is gruff, sad, and pained.
Across town smoke billows as they pass an apartment. Lydia slams on the breaks and gets out of the car. Lydia holds her mouth shut. Instinct has her wanting to screams and she trembles as she fights it. Maybe if she fought it they'd stay alive longer. She should've known when she took the long way that something was off. Boyd and Erica hide in the car as people come out to stare at the building. Finally the screams and the feeling of pain coming from the building cause Lydia to let out a loud ear-splitting scream. The pack come running. Kali leaves Jennifer behind with a panicked look, feet tearing into the ground as she rushes to her alpha's aid. Feet flying across the ground in a blur. She makes it to the car around the same time as the rest of them.
Kali stares at the building. Watches tears fill Lydia's eyes before she runs into the building. Their pain was causing Lydia pain. She would stop it. Her pack didn't need to know pain. Scott comes barreling into the street. He looks to Allison hiding in the back of the car and Lydia with tears in her eyes, before running into the burning building followed by Aiden and Ethan. Derek and Peter stand trembling as the flames flash brightly in their eyes. Memories burn brightly in their minds as their breathing becomes harsh.
Kali lets out a howl of pain as she catches a burning pillar. The child below her screams as the heat licks at his face. Lydia shoves her fist into her mouth as she feels everyones pain. Peter trembles before he runs into the building. Kali was his pack. Kali was in pain. He could feel phantom pains licking at him. Natalie Martin sits by her daughters side as more and more people come. Allison, Erica and Boyd hide trembling in the back seat. Aching to hold Lydia and help. But they couldn't be seen.
Lydia's hands clamp around her throat as she pants. She could feel another scream building. Another person passing. Her throat burns as if she had breathed in the smoke herself. The scream rips from her mouth and all the air leaves her lungs but she keeps screaming. She can't breath. Can't do anything but scream. Her mom's arms are wrapped around her. Soon Scott's pack shows up. Malia takes one look at the burning building before shoving her way in. Derek continues to stand paralyzed. Stiles holds his hand as they stare at the building. The wolves begin to come out one by one. Dropping off people and running back in. Their skin is coated in black. Isaac shakes and quivers at the sound of breaking glass. Cora is crumpled by Lydia. Her hand continues to pet Lydia's hair but her eyes are on the building. Memories burn inside her head as she listens. She struggles to stand and help. To go in but her body trembles. She can hear Malia inside and she wants to force her body to move but nothing happens. She just stays by Lydia's side.
The Sheriff shows up and he direct everyone. He watches as people are brought down. Lydia just stares at the building, mouth open and eyes watering. She can feel each passing. Can feel the flames licking at her pack as they rescue people. The phantom fire burns and licks at her skin as the real fire burns Kali. She can feel Kali's pain but also her determination. It hurts and she hears Aiden growl as he pulls a baby from the bathtub. The pack is in there saving them. The ones that can risk being seen. It was a big fire. A big building. To many floors for the firefighters to cover but the pack was managing it. Supernatural powers helping.
Jennifer stands in the crowd watching. She had followed Klai. She watches and sees Kali go down. Sees the beam hit her hard. She screams in shock and pain before running into the building. She tears through the fire, room by room until she sees a burning Kali. The wolf's body is wrapped around a childs as the fire licks at them. Before Jennifer can even get to them, Peter is picking the both of them up, fire licking at his arms. He has a hoodie pulled over his head, hiding his face, but she can see his glowing blue eyes as he picks them up. Aiden is carrying two elderly men as he breaks down door after door. Jennifer exits through the back and stands behind the crowd as she sees Peter set Kali down. The mother screams in relief and pulls her son into her arms. She moves to thank Kali but the wolf doesn't respond. Lydia scream rips through the air. People cover their ears and glass cracks. Nothing breaks but the scream is heard all over the place. Werewolf packs perk up as they hear this all across the state. Lydia scrambles to Kali's side. Kira trembles as she waits for Scott. She couldn't go in but Scott could. He would come back. Finally Ethan, Isaac, Scott and Malia come out. They bring dead and live bodies with them. Malia sets a kid down and turns to a cop. "That's all of them. We checked each floor and room."
Peter shakes and his body sweats and trembles with PTSD. He stares at his hands as Kali opens her blue eyes. A paramedic see this and slips something over Kali's eyes. The woman looks around. Spotting the barely concealed glowing eyes of the rest of the pack. She stands up and points to her partner. "You drive." She loads Kali onto the stretcher. Lydia grips Peter's hand and follows. Allison is held back by Boyd as is Erica. Cora slips into the drivers seat as Isaac hops into the car.
Ethan and Adien remain with the rest. Waiting it out as the fire burns on. Derek continues to stare at the fire, lost in his thoughts, Stiles hand gripping his tightly.
The paramedic looks to Peter and Lydia. "I know what you are. She won't be logged in with severe injuries because she'll be healed mostly by then." They continue to stare at her. Peter eyes can't focus. "Shit." The paramedic shines a light in his eyes. "I've never seen a wolf go into shock before." His blue eyes shine brightly and his claws grip his knees tightly. One hand is held in Lydia's but he can't seem to focus on it.
Lydia finally speaks. "His former pack died in a fire. He was also in it. He went in because Kali was in there. Because they needed to save everyone. They shouldn't have gone in. I didn't want them to go in. They did it for me. I didn't want them to die."
"It'll be alright okay. I can bring her back to my house for treatment." The paramedic speaks lowly.
"Melissa McCall knows about us. She knows. She can help." Lydia speaks lowly, eyes focused on Kali's face. She has a small burn across her throat, it covers the left side. And there is a gash across her forehead. Her left hand is covered in burns, so it her left shoulder. She had shielded the kid and paid for it. Burns stay with wolves.
