Chapter 1: The Start of Summer Vacation
A/N: Hello everyone! I am back from my very long hiatus :D It's been a very long while since I've been on this platform and I've really missed writing in general. Recently, I've gained the inspiration to rewrite this fanfic. I'm currently a college student so I will try to update this story as often as I can. Thank you for being so patient with me and I can not wait to finally write the beginning and eventual end of this story.I hope you all enjoy the new and improved version :)
The sound of a ticking clock echoed in the small high school classroom where an older man droned on about what the next year would entail and what responsibilities would come about for Senior year. A curly-haired girl sat in the back of the classroom and rolled her eyes at her lecturing teacher before looking outside the window. She observed the gentle breeze that swayed the lush green trees and moved the fluffy white clouds gently across a fair blue sky. It was a perfect summer day and she couldn't wait to bolt out of the classroom. She turned her attention back to the clock on the wall; there were only 3 minutes left of hearing her teacher drone on about life before she could zip out of the school and start her summer vacation.
"Well class, I hope you all have a wonderful summer vacation," he began as he clasped his hands behind his back, "I hope to see you all next year and don't forget-"
Before he could utter the remaining words of his sentence, the bell rang and all the students quickly grabbed their bags and bolted towards the door, filing out into a sea of people that filled the hallways.
Vanessa Alvarez was your typical seventeen-year-old girl and had officially finished her Junior year of high school. Which was in her opinion, the most difficult year of her entire high school career. But! That was all over and it was the first day of summer! So, what better way to spend it than to go home and pull up her Netflix account and watch Transformers Prime? Providing if she could make her way out of the parking lot, of course. She cringed at the thought of all the traffic that would occur and made her way over to the golden 2002 Honda Accord where her younger brother, Julian, was waiting.
"Took you long enough," he remarked, putting his bag in the trunk.
"Oh, shut up," she retorted as she placed her bag down and slammed the trunk shut, "you already know that the idiots in this school move at a snail's pace."
"Well, you better hurry up and start the car because the traffic is starting to line up," he said and jerked his thumb toward the piling line of cars.
Vanessa muttered a curse under her breath and hopped into the car, inserting the key and igniting the engine. She put the car in reverse and pulled out of the parking spot, her brother took the aux cord and plugged it into his phone. Julian gave his sister a mischievous grin before blasting mumble rap through the speakers. Vanessa frowned, glaring at her little brother as he knew she couldn't reach over to the passenger side to strangle him because that would cause her to crash the car. Instead, she sighed heavily and shook her head.
It was going to be a long drive.
They had finally made it home after what seemed like hours of sitting in traffic and hearing her brother blast his god-awful taste of music. Now, Vanessa wanted nothing more but to sit her butt down and open the Netflix app to start the show she was dying to watch. However, as they walked up the driveway to their home, her younger brother insisted on playing at least an hour of some game on his Xbox before sitting down to start the first episode of Transformers Prime. Vanessa rolled her eyes and relented, it wouldn't kill her to wait for her brother to watch the show. She inserted her house key and pushed the door open with her foot, making it creak loudly in the process. They entered their home, kicking off their shoes and placing their book bags in the closet to be forgotten about until the next school year. As Julian made a beeline to the basement, Vanessa decided to take that time to head upstairs and change into comfier clothes which consisted of leggings and a baggy t-shirt. Satisfied with the change of clothes, Vanessa headed back downstairs into the kitchen. As she made her way to the fridge for her afternoon snack, she noticed a note that her mother had left:
" Vane, went to the grocery store- clean up your rooms and tell Julian to take out the garbage. I will be back later this afternoon."
Vanessa promptly ignored the instructions, she could do her chores before her mother got back from the store. Instead, she placed a bag of popcorn into the microwave and within a minute, the house filled up with a buttery aroma. She retrieved her goods from the microwave and sauntered over made to the basement door, it had been long enough that Julian was playing his video games in his little "man cave" and her patience was wearing thin.
"Julian!" she whined from the top of the steps, "Are you done playing? I want to start watching Transformers Prime. If you don't hurry it up, I'm gonna watch it without you."
Vanessa impatiently tapped her fingers on the door as she waited for a response, she hoped he wouldn't stay on his Xbox to continue playing whatever he was playing. Although, it didn't surprise her in the slightest; What 15-year-old boy wouldn't be glued to his T.V. with some kind of game on it.
"Okay Peach, I'll be up soon," he finally yelled back before scream-laughing and cheering at some kill he must've gotten.
Vanessa rolled her eyes at the nickname, she absolutely despised it. Shaking her head, she went into the living room and plopped down on the couch and wondered how much longer it would take her brother to come upstairs. However, after a few minutes, he finally came upstairs and sat down besides Vanessa.
"God took you long enough," she rolled her eyes as he plopped down next to her and reached into the bag of popcorn, taking a handful.
"It was an intense match," he defended before shoving the handful of popcorn into his mouth.
His sister shook her head and clicked on the Netflix icon, "I don't understand how you can get so worked up over a game. Did you win at least?"
"Because bro, there's just a rush of adrenaline of successfully killing everyone and your team winning a match, " he said with a shrug.
Vanessa glanced at her brother for a moment, "There's something fucking wrong with you," she finally stated and he let out a rambunctious laugh.
Vanessa grinned and giggled herself as she pressed the play button on her remote, starting the very first episode of the show. The intro started with its instrumental music and introduction of the characters, some they were able to figure who they were and others who were completely new to the franchise. They quieted down as the episode started, Vanessa looked in awe as she saw the animation of the show. It seemed like it was going to be a more serious series compared to the other ones they had grown up watching.
It had only been a few minutes into the episode when Vanessa noticed the lamp next to her flickering, she wondered if it was the ghost in the house that was messing with her or if the bulb was going to die. It was probably the latter but either way, she could worry about changing the bulb after they finished the episode. She put her attention back on the episode until the other lights in the house began to flicker wildly. Julian looked at Vanessa with furrowed brows, what the hell was happening?
"Shit," Vanessa cursed as the episode stopped and she pressed down on the pause/play button repeatedly.
"Do you think there's going to be a power outage?" Julian asked aloud, anxiously waiting for the room to go dark any minute.
"God, I hope not," she said as she banged the remote against her hand, why wasn't this stupid thing working? All she wanted to do was finish the first episode, was that too much to ask?
They were both confused on why the lights were flickering, it usually happened during a storm but the skies were clear. Maybe there was something wrong with the power line? Whatever the reason, Vanessa hoped that the lights wouldn't explode. She definitely wasn't to get yelled at for something like a freak explosion of light bulbs.
"Hey, uh Vane," Julian began as his eyes went wide. The image of the show was glitching and distorting itself and a high buzzing began to emit from the television.
"What-" The words in her voice abruptly disappeared as her attention immediately snapped to the television; It was going haywire! The T.V. had started to emit the buzzing at a louder volume and a green glow seem to ooze out of the screen and its surrounding area, illuminating the room in a bright green hue. The only thing that the two siblings could do was sit on the couch, frozen in fear as the hue became bigger and brighter. Before Vanessa could snap out of her fearful trance and grab her brother and run out of the household, the light from the television became a blinding white. The television couldn't handle the increasing light and it groaned before tearing its frame apart, letting the light envelop the whole room and swallowed the siblings and their screams.
Not long after, the world went dark and their screams were forgotten and unheard.
