Chapter 6: Where Loyalties Lie
Puck slammed his fist against the desk with a loud yell. This couldn't be happening. He was sure his source was correct. He was positive she would be there.
"You're scaring our son." Rachel said as he looked up forgetting for a brief moment he was alone.
"Sorry." He replied with a half smile.
"Wanna talk about it?"
"No, can you give me a few moments alone. Tell everyone that I want to be alone." Puck didn't even give Rachel time to reply before he was dialing another number in his phone.
"Hey it me, Mercedes! Make it interesting."
"Where the fuck are you Mercedes? This shit has gone on too fucking long. I swear to god if you don't bring my daughter back to this house I will k-..." He hung up. Ten seconds later he called back and got voicemail again. "Mercedes...it's me. I just want to talk please. Call me back."
He was losing his mind. He didn't know if it was the fact that he hadn't seen his wife or daughter in three months, or the investigation, or the fact that him and Sam weren't really on speaking terms, whichever one it was he was feeling himself break. He was so filled with rage and anger especially when it came to Mercedes sometimes it blinded him. He knew he was the one in the wrong but this was nothing new. She always forgave him, no matter how bad he fucked up, she forgave him. He never wanted to think why this time was different, because then he would have to face a possible hard truth. Something that he suspected for many years but he never let his suspicions get the best of him. Maybe because he was naive to think that she would ever allow herself to have feelings for another man. She was his. He didn't even wanna think about it, the thought of her and him it just made his blood boil more. He would kill Sam before he let him just pick up a life with Mercedes and his daughter. It was a stupid thought but he had to face the truth. Maybe she didn't come back because she was in love with his best friend and she finally saw this as an opportunity for them to be happy. He was shaken out of his thoughts when someone knocked and entered his office.
"I said I don't want to be bothered."
Lorenzo poked his head in, he was a little frightened. "I know, but you said you wanted to know when Sam made it." He swallowed hard.
"Send him in."
The scared man couldn't leave fast enough from Puck's sight. Not even a minute later Sam entered Pucks office.
"Yeah," Sam called out as he entered.
"Mercedes wasn't there." Puck informed him. "Lorenzo is back."
Sam stayed silent looking at the other gentlemen for a few moments before speaking. "Is that why he looks like he is going to shit his pants?"
"He said the owners said she left three days ago. This is bullshit. Look, I know we haven't resolved..."
"No, we haven't. This crap going on with the feds is causing a big panic with everyone, but I haven't forgot about what you said. You came after me because I wouldn't do something that I told you would blow up in your face anyway."
"I don't need a fucking I told you so."
"It's not I told you so, hopefully you use it as a wake up call. If she wants to be found she will be found. Do you think calling her, and leaving her threatening messages is going to make her come back home? I'm pretty sure she seen the news, I'm pretty sure she knows what's going on, and I'm sure she knows the danger that she and Ladybug is in. But obviously she feels like this house is more dangerous if she didn't come running back immediately." Sam stated leaning against the door. He didn't feel like sitting down just in case he needed to make a quick move.
Last time him and Puck were in this office together they nearly came to blows. It had been tension with every encounter they've had since and Sam was sure Puck wanted to try and prove his manliness with the rest of the boys but Sam wasn't the one.
"So what, you're going to lecture me instead?"
"Yes, cause I'm your friend and you need to hear this. Get your fucking shit together. That bullshit you did, it was insane. You say you want her to feel like you felt, want her to hurt like you hurt. Guess what, the only person that's going to be hurt in the scenario is your daughter. Can't you see this is why she bringing in the first place?"
"She didn't give me a choice!" Noah barked.
"Did you give her one?" Sam countered. The door opened lightly and Sam pushed it shut before whoever was on the other end had a chance to interrupt. He locked it and moved over to where Puck was sitting.
"You are my best friend, and I love you like a brother. However you're a fucking idiot. All you had to do was wait. All you had to do was wait, wait for her to come back to you. She needed time but what did you do? You bombard her, threatened her, hell if I was her I probably would've ran to. Give her some credit, Mercedes is not stupid. She knew the moment that she saw the news report about the Feds you would send someone after her. So of course she left, of course she went away. Now we probably will never know where they are because you make stupid irrational decisions."
"I did what I felt was the right thing to do."
"Look what it got you, absolutely nothing." Sam shook his head.
"Oh, so what, you're the expert on my wife huh? You know her so well." Puck chuckled dryly.
"I know her better than you do. I know the thing and Lorenzo out of everyone in this house was the stupidest thing you could've done. He sloppy, and he has a unorthodox way of doing things. I bet she didn't even leave three days ago, I bet she saw him coming a mile away, and she slipped on him."
"You wouldn't do it. I asked you to go."
"No, you ordered me to go. Plus, you sent me with dumb ass orders. Kidnap Farrah? What kind of bullshit was that?"
"Look, we've already had this conversation once. I want to ask you something Sam, and if you lie to me..."
"Back to the threats I see. I already know what you're going to ask but I'll entertain you." He took a seat this time folding his hands in his lap waiting for what he knew was coming.
Puck waited and took a deep breath. He was about to make a big accusation. "Did you tip her off? Did you tell Mercedes what I was planning?"
"Yes." Sam said with a simple shrug to his shoulders.
"Why the fuck would you do that?" Puck sneered.
"I was trying to save you from doing something stupid. So I called her, I told her that you were coming to bring her home. I didn't tell her that you wanted to kidnap Farrah. I said it would be easier if you just come home with me."
"You stupid son of a bitch." Puck made a move towards Sam and Sam was ready. He stood meeting Noah in the middle of the office. Their faces barely an inch apart. "I could kill you."
"You could try. Then what? You can get mad all you want to, but I saved your ass. The moment Lorenzo would've took her, Mercedes would've given the Feds everything she needed to take every single one of you down. That little girl is her world and you tried to jeopardize that. So the way I see it, you owe me a thank you." Sam had a smug smile on his face.
"I don't owe you shit." Puck retorted. "She wouldn't have done that."
"Like he'll she wouldn't. When I told her to come with me she told me to fuck off. She also told me to give you a little message, if you send someone looking for her again, she'll tell the Feds everything she knows."
"She's bluffing."
"Did you not hear a word I just said? She doesn't want to be found." Sam looked at dumbfounded.
"Tell me where she's at?"
"How the hell would I know? She hates me just as much she hates you remember? When I told her to tell me where she was going she told me to go fuck myself."
"I found her once I can find her again." Puck stopped listened to Sam from the moment he admitted he snitched. At this point it was clear which side Sam was on. It wasn't his. He shouldn't be surprised. His loyalty was to Mercedes and had been for a long time now. "You're fired."
"Fine. I figured this was coming. A word of advice before I leave. Don't go opening doors that you don't wanna know what's behind." Sam turned to leave but hesitated.
"You forgot how to walk?"
"If I step outside this door am I going to have to kill someone to leave? Cause I don't have an issue doing so?" Sam questioned.
"No, but Sam if I find out you know where she is or where she's been this whole time, I won't let our friendship stop me from putting a bullet between your eyes." Puck warned.
"Again, you can try." Sam responded and left.
Shortly afterwards, Lorenzo, Azimo, and Smokey entered.
"Well boss," Azimo quipped.
"He admitted to tipping her off." Puck replied mind swirling with thoughts.
"I knew that bitch didn't get the best of me." Lorenzo griped. "Why are you just letting him leave? Why aren't we breaking his ankles?"
"Because we need him. He claims Mercedes didn't tell him where she went but he's a fucking liar. He knows where she's at, and he's going to lead us to her. Then I will have my baby girl back." Puck informed them.
"And Mercedes? Sam?" Smokey asked.
"We eliminate them."
Sam was shocked he left without any issues or confrontations. Other than the little showdown he had with Puck in his office no one else really said anything out of pocket to him. He made it to his car and pulled out the driveway hand on his gun just in case this was too good to be true. He knew the motto. Once you're in, you're in for life.
Long story short. You didn't just get to leave. Sam wasn't an idiot. He knew this wasn't over by a long shot. He had to play his cards right, he had no choice. If it was just his well being involved then he wouldn't care. He would go put guns blazing and made sure he took a far amount of people with him. He couldn't do that, not when he was responsible for keeping Mercedes and Farrah safe. Once he was completely in the clear of the Lopez Mansion he pulled his phone from his pocket and dialed a number.
"Hello," a female voice answered.
"I'm out. I was fired, but I'm out." He stated.
"Finally. Doesn't mean I'm going to breathe any easier."
"I know. You worry too much." He chuckles lightly.
"Somebody has to worry about your crazy ass." There was a brief moment of silence before she spoke again. "Sam, why do I have a feeling I won't see you for awhile?"
Sam sighed sadly and waited before he delivered the news he knew she wouldn't be happy to hear. "Because it's not safe. I can't come out there. Puck is a fucking fool but he's not completely stupid. I did what I needed to in order to set certain things in motion but right now I can't be there."
"I hate this. All of it. You putting yourself out there for what? What's going to happen if you get yourself killed?"
"I'm not. I know what I'm doing. Trust me please."
"I do trust you, doesn't mean I can't be concerned."
"I know. Look, I promise I will come as soon as I can. Right now it's best if we all just lay low. I gotta go. I love you and I will call you once I get settled." He said trying his best to reassure the worried female on the other line.
"I love you too...Spud." She said with a smile.
"Ugh, I take my I love you back. You know I hate when you call me that." He rolled his eyes.
"You love me and you are just going to have to deal. Besides, I'm all you got. Well, me and I guess my new houseguests."
"Thanks for doing this for me Quinn. I know you like your own space filled with peace and quiet."
"Don't. I'll always have your back. Whatever you need."
