Chapter 30
A year passed after we found out our children were losing their ability to change. Keir was now a fully human, although he did seem to hold a certain magic that only he could use. Nothing like he could use before, but definitely magic. Keena was now a full Dark One and was now confined to using dragon magic. Without the ability to change, Keena was now carrying her brother when ever they wanted to fly, not it seemed to bother them none. The only thing that seemed to bother them was the fact that Hiccup and I refused to allow them to come with us on our rescue missions to free other dragons from those who were hunting them.
As far as understanding the magic that allowed Hiccup and I to merge into Serenity, we soon figured out that in order to summon her, we just needed to be in sync, in movement, motivation, emotion, and mind. This we did pretty often on our rescue missions, mostly just to gain further control of her when we merged and the magic that allowed us to become her. Soon, it became as easy as flying.
Today, I found Hiccup looking over the village from a ledge not far from the Great Hall.
"What are you thinking about?" I asked sitting down close to her.
"Just thinking about something my Dad used to tell me about when I was a kid." She answered. "He used to tell me about a hidden world, the home of all dragons. I've been thinking that maybe, since we started bringing home all these dragons, we've become an even bigger target than ever before and that the only way we can all be safe is to find the hidden world and make it our new home."
"Do you even hear yourself?" I said in shock at what she was suggesting. "Even if such a place exists, do you even know where we would even start looking to find it?"
"My dad left me all his notes and research, it's a start." She answered. "Toothless, I don't like it either, but with the price on our heads, not just yours and mine, but all our people's, it might be the only chance we have at ensuring that the hunters can't hurt the dragons anymore and that our people won't be hunted either."
I was about to ask her how she planned on getting everyone else on board with this crazy idea of relocation she had when we heard our children laughing and racing toward the forest. We went after them and caught up with them as Keena dove into the forest. When we caught up to them, Keena said she thought she smelled something. I smelled it too, a new dragon was here, and it was one we had not come into contact before. We followed the scent to a clearing, where we found a white dragon that was very similar in appearance to us. I knew what he was, he was a White One, and a very young one at that, likely not much older than my children. Keena and I tried to approach him, but once he caught sight of Hiccup and Keir, he fired a single shot and disappeared into the night.
"What was that?" Hiccup asked holding Keir close to her after dodging the shot.
"That was a White One, they are not much different than us," I answered "And this one has clearly been separated from his family, otherwise he not have been here by himself.
"Poor thing." Hiccup said stroking Keir and Keena. "Why wouldn't let us help him?"
"He likely doesn't trust humans because the hunters likely killed his family."
"Daddy, will we see him again?" Keena asked.
"Probably, sweetheart." I answered nudging her gently.
"In mean time, it's getting late and it's time for a certain duo to be in bed." Hiccup said with a little laugh. "Let's call it a night and go home."
After we settled down for the night, Hiccup got to work going through her father's notes and journals, looking for anything that might lead her to finding the hidden world her father told her about. Myself, I wasn't even sure this hidden world was even real. All my life, I heard stories, but I never believed in them because such a wonderful place couldn't possibly be real, could it?
(I'm sorry. I know for as long as it has taken me to update this story this chapter is disappointingly short, but it is very late right now and I am tired, but I promise, now that I have had time to figure out an appropriate ending for this story, I will be updating this more frequently now and the chapters will be much longer than this. I thank all my readers and followers for your patience)
