A/N: I don't even know what I'm doing anymore. All I know is that I'm loving the response this story is getting. Keep it up XD
Beth shivered and felt her knees give way. As she let herself slide down the wall so she was sitting against it, she tried to control her breathing.
The effect that man had on her was a little insane; a little terrifying if she was being honest with herself. But she wanted more.
Once she felt she was sufficiently composed, Beth got up to wander back to the picnic. Several children swarmed toward her, screeching about the one precious chocolate bar that Michonne had brought to their picnic. Beth showed the appropriate excitement, convincing the children at least. The other women, however, were not so easily sated – especially Beth's sister.
"What did Daryl want, Beth?" Maggie asked her sister, seemingly absently, as the younger woman sat down.
"Oh, um..." Beth was sure she'd had an excuse ready. But when she thought of what had actually happened, her mind went blank. All she could do was shake her head and laugh softly. "Nothing."
Michonne, Carol and Maggie exchanged dubious looks before they turned back to Beth.
"Nope, sorry Beth. That's not gonna cut it," Michonne said, grinning.
"Spill," Carol agreed.
Beth looked up at all three women, eyes flicking from face to face. It looked like they weren't gonna take no for an answer. Didn't mean she wasn't gonna put up a fight.
"It really was nothing, I swear. Something about where I'd left the stereo," Beth put on her most innocent, believable face. And she might have sold Carol and Michonne with a few more convincing words; she should have known, though, that her sister would see straight through it. The years that Beth had been covering for Maggie, the amount of times that the older sister had almost been convinced herself by Beth's perfect lies – Maggie had learned her sister's tells.
Just as the other two women looked like they were going to move on to new topics, Maggie made them all jump by gasping loudly.
"Beth!" she exclaimed. "What happened?!"
Beth glared at her. "Didn't ya just hear, Maggie. Nothin' happened."
Maggie could tell that her sister didn't want to discuss this in front of everyone but the older woman decided that as punishment for her outrageous lie, the girl would have to spill there and then.
"That's the face and tone you use only when you're hiding the big stuff, Beth. You can't fool me."
Beth continued to glare while the other two women gaped at the younger Greene sister. Beth knew that Maggie wasn't about to let it go. Sighing, she glanced surreptitiously at the children, satisfying herself that they were out of earshot.
"Well, it ain't nothin', not really," she mumbled, not ashamed, just trying to make sure the kids didn't hear. Which only made all three women gape more. "I'm just messing with him...for now."
Jaws dropped.
"It ain't nothin'?"
"Messing with him?"
"For now?"
Beth didn't know who to answer first but she started by shushing them all, jerking her head toward the children. Maggie grabbed her forearm where it lay on the table, gripping it hard.
"You have about five seconds to start talkin' young lady," she said in a voice that allowed no room for argument.
Beth sighed again. "It all started when I overheard a conversation between Rick and Daryl..."
Twenty minutes later, Rick wandered over to the table to find the four women in tears of laughter. He went to pick up his daughter from the blanket on the grass, at which point the women noticed his presence. Carol stood, still laughing but apologising. The other three just laughed harder, Rick's arrival reminding them all over again of the cause of their laughter.
"Sorry Rick. We did still had half an eye on them, I swear. It's just Beth...told us a very funny story..." and with that, the short-haired woman succumbed to laughter once again.
Rick shook his head, unable to contain a smile at the women's antics. "No need to apologise. Care to share just what is so funny?"
All three women stopped laughing for a moment and turned to look at Beth. She shook her head slightly, smirking a little, before throwing her head back and letting out another laugh. Then, without ceremony, she stood up and walked away.
"Maggie, did you know she had it in her?" Carol asked as they all watched the young woman's retreating form in astonishment.
Maggie shook her head. "Uh-uh, nope. I have no idea where that came from."
"She always seems so...innocent," Michonne intoned.
The women turned sharply when they heard a derisive snort from behind them.
"Reckon I know what y'all were laughing about now," Rick grinned.
