Unlucky 13…I think not :-)

Chapter 13

"Shh…" He continues to hush her. She made it through the doctor's office and out to the car without having a breakdown, but she's losing it now.

Bella clings to him. "We'll lose it. I know it."

"Have faith," he whispers, kissing her head and cheeks. "It'll be all right."

"I can't lose this baby."

"Bella, we'll do what we can. We can only do what we can."

She sighs and sobs against him. "I want this baby."

"I want this baby, too. Just relax and have faith. Let it be."

Biting her lip, she pulls back and looks at him in the driver's seat of her car. "Okay."

He smiles, and wipes her tears and cheeks lightly. "I love you."

She nods. "I love you."

"It'll be all right," he promises her, not knowing what the future holds for this child.

Charlie's helping fix the last of the house this weekend. Bella and Sue are inside talking.

"I'm glad Bella met you," Charlie says without looking up from his task.

Edward glances over at Bella's father.

"I mean, it's completely− was completely crazy, her plan."

He chuckles at Charlie and nods to himself, fully agreeing.

"But I'm glad she's happy, you know?" Charlie came up a few months ago when Edward had first come back, and they had a heart-to-heart, a man-to-man. Edward's a good kid, a good man, and Charlie's satisfied with the man Bella chose for herself.

"Thank you, Charlie." He feels like he belongs with Bella. He hasn't felt that since Mac. He feels it now with Bella, her father, and his wife.

"How's the baby?"

"Beautiful." Edward smiles, thinking of the image they received at the last ultrasound. He's certain this kid is going to be a heartbreaker. "She's so worried, and I can't do anything to ease that."

"You being here eases it," Charlie says firmly.

"She lost our last baby around this time. Every day, I'm worried she'll call me from work to say she's in pain. Every night, I'm scared I'll wake up to…"

Charlie looks at Edward sadly. "Stay strong. I know it's hard, but even if you lose this little one − God forbid − you have each other. She'll need you."

Edward nods and listens to Charlie, the second father figure in his life providing him with what a father should provide his child. "Thank you."

Bella undresses and smiles at her reflection in the mirror, at her bump.

Edward glances at her antics. "What are you doing?"

"Admiring our work," she replies, grinning. She's 28 weeks along. Each doctor's visit is scary, but she feels her baby moving.

Edward laughs and watches her as she rubs her belly with cream after her shower. She's embracing her cravings and tiredness, but she isn't pushing herself.

Her cell rings. "Can you grab that for me?" she says of the phone by the bedside.

Edward picks it up and looks at the screen. "Alice," he informs her.

"Tell her I'm fine and ready to spend the night with you without interruptions.

He smiles, touching the accept button. "Hello, Alice."

"Is Bella okay?" she questions quickly, not sure why Edward is answering the phone.

"She's here rubbing the baby, said she's fine, and is going to spend the night worshiping me."

Alice laughs. "Sounds good. Enjoy, loverboy."

"Thank you. Goodnight, Alice."

Bella closes the cream jar and rolls her eyes. "I don't think I used those exact words."

"No?" He throws her phone lightly. He's going to get a phone this weekend, because he really needs one for himself. He uses Bella's during the day while she's at work, as she has her office phone, but they need to be able to contact each other when she's not in her office and they're apart.

"Definitely not." Bella wiggles out of her underwear as she walks towards him near the bed.

She's a goddess. It's amazing how attracted he is to her body. Edward licks his lips as he looks at her and smiles. "Hey."

"Hello." She grins. Her arms go around his neck, and she pushes onto him. "Are you happy?" She rests her body against his.

"Very. And excited."

"I'm excited, too, but scared."

"Don't be." Edward kisses the side of her head and holds her close.

"So you haven't bought anything else?" Rose questions.

"No. I'm really trying not to get my hopes up."

"Oh, Bella." Alice sighs and rubs her friend's hand. "When do you stop working?"

"I'm going to stop in four weeks and rest at home for the last four weeks of the pregnancy."

"That might be a good thing." Rose nods. "How's Edward?"

"Wonderful." Bell grins. She knows she's in the clear once she hits 35 weeks. Going into labor then won't be a death sentence. She doesn't necessarily want to go into labor at 35 weeks, but she knows it'll be okay for the most part. She has eight weeks to go and is holding on as hard as she can. Everything feels good, feels right. She's enjoyed this pregnancy so much. Edward's taken such good care of her and their baby.

"I'm so happy for you, Bella. Who would have thought a night out with Jessica would turn into this?" Rose laughs.

Bella grins and shrugs, so completely happy. "Who would have thought Edward, the tattooed biker, would turn out to be−" Bella stops, so full of love for him.

Rose smiles and reaches for Bella's hand. "I'm so happy for you and Edward. You deserve it all, girl."

Lifting her hair, he kisses down her bare neck. "I love you," he whispers into her skin. All day, he'd been craving to see her and desperate for the chance to hold her. He's been looking for jobs and got a call back this morning to meet with and employer. Bella told him she wants him at home with her during her maternity leave so they can experience as much as possible together. He'll stay, but he wants to be a provider for the two of them. In his perfect world, she wouldn't have to work another day in her life, but she loves her job, and the paycheck she takes home is ideal for raising a child.

Bella moans and reaches back to stroke his hair. "How'd the job hunt go?"

His hands cup her heavy breasts. "Are they too sensitive?"

"No," she whispers, turning her face to kiss his lips.

"I got a job at the local garage." He chuckles before stroking his thumbs over her nipples.

"I'm so proud of you." She smiles, turning to kiss his mouth. She knows he doesn't want to go back into the school system just yet, but he's not ready to get his teaching license. He loves to work with his hands, so the garage will be great for him. She's happy.

Edward smiles and holds her close, her belly between them. He feels so content with his life now. For far too long, he was drifting through towns, through cities, through sheets. He kisses Bella with all he has, his hands holding her face steady.

Bella gets swept away in her desire for him. "I want you." She pulls away and pants.

"Yeah?" He hits his nose into hers before tasting her mouth once again.

"Yeah." She smiles.

"Have me," he whispers. She's so much less reserved than when he met her, but in his opinion, she still has a ways to go.

"Wow." Edward laughs. He looks at her as she leans over him, her hair a mess.

Bella smiles. "I'm so much slower now."

"You're so much more pregnant now." He smiles as he pushes her crazy hair from her face. Her cheeks are red. He loves doing it with the light on. He can see everything that's his, all of her. "I love you and this baby."

Bella smiles brightly. "We love you." Leaning down without squishing her belly, she kisses his mouth.

Bella's being wheeled into the hospital, but it doesn't feel real. Her dad and Sue are on the road now toward the city.

She laughs, because it just feels crazy. It feels like it's finally the end of something that's been weighing on her for so long. She feels light, so ready.

"You ready, Bella?"

Bella nods. It's painful, but she dismissed any drugs to ease the pain. She wants to remember everything − every pinch, pull, and push.

Edward is right next to her, his eyes wide. He's proud of how calm she is. She was made for this, he sees now. Leaning in, he kisses her damp forehead. "You okay?"

Bella nods quickly, and her eyes shut when he whispers into her ear.

"You're amazing. You can do this, Mama."

The cry is delightful.

Bella sobs, holding her newborn daughter to her chest.

Edward is wide-eyed. He's not ignorant, but seeing this baby come out of Bella was off the charts, more than anything he's ever experienced in his life. He can't even put into words how he feels or what just happened. It's truly a miracle, a life created. He stands dumbly and watches Bella holding the baby so naturally. She's squealing from the cold baby on her chest. The nurse rubs the baby's tiny, blood-covered back and takes her from Bella.

Bell glances at him. "Hey." She breathes out, slightly breathless.

Edward pulls his eyes from his daughter. "We made her?"

"Yeah." Bella nods and smiles. "You and me."

"Jesus Christ," he whispers as he watches the nurses clean his daughter, swaddling her nice and snug. His eyes are simply wide and unmoving.
