HIGH IMPORTANCE: PLEASE READ!: I APOLOGISE FOR THE INFLUX OF 'NEW CHAPTER' EMAILS, BUT IN THE PROCESS OF TRYING TO PLACE OLD ONE SHOT STORIES, 'WHATS IN A NAME' AND 'BABYSITTING NIGHTMARE' AT THE BEGINNING OF LIVING WITH THE HADDOCKS, I HAVE MASSIVELY STUFFED UP TRYING TO CHANGE IT AND IN THE PROCESS I HAD TO DELETE AND REPOST THE OLD CHAPTERS. I AM SO SO SORRY FOR THE MIX UP. NEW CHAPTERS WILL BE UP IN A MONTH OR TWO AFTER I'VE GOT A DECENT START ON THE PREQUEL TO THIS STORY, THE EARLY DAYS. WHATS IN A NAME AND BABYSITTING NIGHTMARE HAVE SINCE BEEN DELETED AS THEY ARE NOW WITHIN THIS STORY. THANKS FOR YOUR UNDERSTANDING.
PLEASE READ ALL AUTHOR'S NOTES IN THIS CHAPTER. THANKS! (I will usually always ask this throughout the story because there is usually extra information or explanations for things in the chapter that may need to be read)
No, you're not on the wrong story for anyone coming back to Living with The Haddocks! What's in A Name and Babysitting Nightmare are now the new chapters 1 and 2 and the others have been changed in order number. I have many people ask me to put these two stories as a part of Living with the Haddocks, so now they are!
Ok, for any new readers, welcome to the first chapter of my longer multi-chapter story. These one shots will be based around Hiccup and Astrid's family life with their children and onwards. This first chapter is introduces Hiccup and Astrid's new baby daughter, Siri and the process on which they name her.
Just a note to new readers before I begin. These oneshots are set when the characters are in their early 20s onwards, they are married, and beginning families, so if anyone seems to be OOC, I apologise. This is the way I think of the characters at this age, it may not be everyone's point of view of course, but I will try my best to keep them in character whenever I can!
This story was first published before HTTYD 2 was released, and has since been edited to incorporate the httyd 2 better, due to popular demand and out of necessity. I began to feel uninterested in the story after I saw httyd 2 because it didn't follow canon, so once I got permission off readers, I changed the canon. I didn't do this to upset people, though, but out of necessity, but luckily it turned out to be a good decision :) So, originally, Stoick was in the story, but after HTTYD 2, he was edited out, and Valka added in. RTTE, though, is a different story. Some things in that will be canon, but a lot of the later seasons I'm afraid I can't help much.
I also want to point out that in this story, Snotlout and Hiccup are NOT cousins. I know that they are in the book series, but in the movies and TV series there is no evidence that they are. You'll see why I added this note in when you get further into the series. Because of the later seasons of RTTE as well, Trader Johan is not a traitor in this story (although I will stop mentioning him now most likely!) and Hiccup and Astrid became engaged in this story and the betrothal episode was more of a promise thing in this canon if it's mentioned.
Chapter 1 - What's in a Name?
Hiccup and Astrid couldn't believe life could have been more perfect as it was now. The couple had married young at 20, not long after the whole business with Drago and now 2 years later, had been blessed with a beautiful baby girl. She had come into the world 2 weeks early, but was healthy and perfect, with fine strands of blonde hair, blue eyes and very pink cheeks. To Hiccup and Astrid, she was everything they could have ever wished for. There was one small problem. They couldn't agree, or decide, on what to name her. Plus it was tradition for children to be officially named 2 days after the baby's birth, so time was running out fast.
"How about naming her after someone?" Astrid suggested. "Your mother? Or mine? Not me, though, one Astrid's bad enough," she chuckled.
Chuckling at that remark, Hiccup found himself shaking his head in disagreement. "She needs to have her own name; one that means something," Hiccup said. "I don't want her named something hideous, whether it's tradition or not."
"Well, that narrows it down," Astrid said dryly.
Hiccup sighed and stroked a strand of his baby girl's hair thoughtfully. Astrid also looked at the baby girl, wondering what could possibly be the perfect name.
"What about Kelda?" Astrid said hopefully. "It's a strong name."
"Oh come on, you can't be serious!" Hiccup exclaimed in disbelief.
Astrid frowned. "What's wrong with it?" Astrid asked.
"What's right with it is more like it," Hiccup mumbled.
"What about Sigfrid?" Astrid suggested.
Hiccup looked at her in disbelief. "Yeah, because that sounds like the most beautiful girls name in the world," Hiccup said, his voice dripping with sarcasm, which had Astrid look at him in confusion.
"What?" Hiccup said defensively. "It sounds like a boy's name!"
Astrid couldn't help but hide a grin at that. Hiccup was sort of right with that one.
"What about Ingrid?" Hiccup asked. "It means beautiful and it's really nice."
Astrid looked at the baby girl in her arms, then back to Hiccup, before shaking her head. "As much as I like the name and it's close to perfect, it just... doesn't suit her," Astrid said stubbornly.
Hiccup groaned in frustration and collapsed next to his wife in defeat. "Way this is going she'll be the only Viking on Berk without a name," he said in frustration.
"Yeah, and if Gobber gets word of it, he'll soon come up with something instead," Astrid said worriedly.
Knowing she was referring to the incident with Magnus several years back, Hiccup swallowed nervously and shuddered at the thought. There was no way he was letting Gobber name his baby girl!
Astrid sighed, getting ever more frustrated. "So we're looking for a strong Viking name that means something, yet still sounds nice. Hiccup, it's getting impossible. We're going to have to pick a name and stick with it," Astrid said gently, as she gave Hiccup a peck on the cheek in reassurance.
Hiccup smiled gratefully at her, before heaving a sigh. She was right, and he was finally about to agree, when his eyes suddenly widened.
"Astrid, what was celebrated yesterday?" Hiccup asked slowly.
"What do you mean?" Astrid said, as she threw him a quizzical look. "The baby was born yesterday. Or did you forget the 12 hours I spent bringing her into this world already?" she said wryly.
Hiccup winced. He remembered all too well. He'd stayed with Astrid the whole time, just wanting her pain to end.
"No, not just that," Hiccup said with a shake of his head. "What day does she share her birthday with?" Hiccup grinned, prompting a sudden look of understanding upon Astrid's weary face.
"The anniversary of the defeat of the Red Death!" she exclaimed enthusiastically.
"I think I have the perfect name," Hiccup said cheerfully, which he then whispered to Astrid, who beamed widely in response as she glanced down at the baby girl in her arms.
"It's perfect."
The following afternoon, Hiccup and Astrid were standing in front of their tribe in the Great Hall, the baby in Astrid's proud arms, ready to announce their babies' name. As father of the baby girl ,though, Hiccup couldn't lead the naming ceremony like he usually would as Chief. Because of this, his mother had stepped in as representative of the Chief on his behalf.
"So, you two finally named my granddaughter?" Valka said cheerfully. "With the time it took, it must be a good one."
Hiccup and Astrid grinned at each other.
"We think so, mum," Hiccup said hopefully.
"Let's reveal it then, shall we?" Valka said, as she called everyone to attention.
"Today we are here to announce the name of my granddaughter," Valka announced to the gathered Vikings, "who was born two days ago to my son, Chief Hiccup, and my daughter-in-law, Astrid. So, without further ado..."
Astrid gently handed the baby to Valka, before whispering the name in her ear. Upon hearing the name, Valka's face lit up, before she turned to the throng of Vikings around them.
"As representative of today's ceremony, I welcome this baby into the Hooligan Tribe, and pronounce the name to be, Siri Astrid Haddock!" Valka exclaimed proudly, leading to a cheer from the gathered Vikings, before she passed a newly named Siri back into Astrid's waiting arms, the rest of the Dragon riders came up to them.
"Siri huh? What does that mean?" Fishlegs asked them curiously.
Astrid and Hiccup grinned.
"It means beautiful victory," Hiccup said proudly.
I hope you all enjoyed this! This was originally my first attempt at a fanfiction on the site, so the quality of this compared to my later ones will differ greatly.
By the way, the name Siri IS actually a Scandinavian name meaning 'beautiful OR marvellous victory' and for any of you thinking of the app 'Siri' you aren't alone! Not long after I posted this story 3 years ago, I had a few friends point out to me that I've named Hiccup and Astrid's daughter after a phone app! At the time of writing this, I had only heard about the app in passing mention as I didn't have it myself at the time, so me using this name was completely accidental! You have to admit, though, it is a little weird for a phone app to be named after a Nordic name meaning beautiful victory! Lucky I (and a lot of readers) loved the name or else I would have changed it!
Also, I want to clear a few things up, in case anyone was confused with this chapter. One reviewer asked me how old Siri really was in this story. She is only a day old. I said she had come into the world, 2 weeks EARLY. She wasn't due for another few weeks. I must have worded things badly, and for that I apologise. This was my first fanfiction at the time and I was still learning :) I also meant with Siri's name, that her FIRST NAME should be different, but I didnt really think about the middle name. I thank this person for bringing this to my attention for new readers, but this was my first attempt at a story, and I know there were issues. I'm glad you liked it to that reviewer though! :D
Thanks for reading my first chapter! :D
