Last Night
Isabel Night
I was thirsty, that's how it all started. It was the middle of the night; Mia, Anubis, and I were sleeping when I became thirsty. As I was going down the steps to get some water to drink, I saw Anubis sleeping on the couch in the living room. Mia had insisted that Anubis sleep in the guest bedroom, but Anubis wanted to be close to the fireplace, saying that it had been a long time since he had been near that type of warmth. As I looked at Anubis sleeping, I smiled. He slept very well for someone who had went through Hell and back in the Dynasty. But he was a good guy now, like my big brothers Ryo, Rowen, Kento, Sage, and Cye. Anubis was cool, he taught me how to play the flute, he showed me the beauty of spring, and he showed me some games he used to play as a child. I liked Anubis a lot. So when I think of the other Warlords, I feel like I want to hurt them.
I walked past Anubis and went into the kitchen. After I got my water and finished drinking it, I walked back to my room. As I walked past the living room, I looked at Anubis once more. Then suddenly, the room became full of shadows. I hid behind the couch and looked at Anubis, who was still sleeping. I knew that those shadows meant one thing: a Warlord was in the room. As I hid behind the couch with only my head showing, Dais the Warlord of Illusion appeared. He looked like he was hanging upside down from a spider web, watching Anubis closely. Dais then got off his web and stood straight up. It was then that I realized that Dais came here to kill Anubis. I was so scared that I couldn't move or make a sound. I watched Dais walk over to Anubis in horror; for a Warlord, Dais was very quiet. As he got to Anubis, I noticed that his armor faded away, and all that stood in his place was a man with white hair, one blue eye, an eye patch, and wearing sub armor that looked a little like my big brothers. In that moment, all I could comprehend was that Dais was a human being, just like Anubis.
I watched Dais pull out a dagger, and raise it as if he were going to plummet it into Anubis' heart. And yet, in my horror, I noticed Kanji on the blade. The Kanji read "Forever Friends." I was shocked, were these Warlords once friends with each other? Was there a bond between the Warlords like there were with my big brothers? I pushed those thoughts out of my head when I saw Dais' hand tremble. Was he not able to kill Anubis in his sleep? I also saw tears forming in Dais' eye as he dropped the dagger and sob silently. I watched Dais in amazement, for I had never seen a Warlord cry. Dais took one look at Anubis and disappeared. I was still frozen in place when Dais reappeared.
He scooped Anubis up in his arms and began to walk up the stairs, either he didn't see me or he saw me and didn't care that I was there. I followed Dais as he walked right into the guest bedroom. When I peeked in, I noticed that the bed was turned down and ready for someone to sleep in. I watched as Dais lowered Anubis onto the bed and covered him up in the sheets. As Anubis slept, Dais began to softly sing a lullaby. I didn't recognize the words but I later found out that the song Dais sang had been his family for generations as a song to ease troubled minds. After Dais sang the lullaby, he kissed Anubis' forehead, and disappeared.
I did not see Dais again for the rest of the night. I went back to bed, but had trouble falling asleep. When I woke up in the morning, Anubis asked me if he had been walking in his sleep. Trying to pretend I didn't know why he ended up in the guest bedroom, I told him no. When we got to the train tracks later that day, Dais appeared again.
