A/N: Okay, so I had no idea what the Japanese goddess of love is named, and I am too lazy to go research it. In the Poker Face comic in COMIC LOID, Gumi was named Megumi and the character used for her name was 愛, which means love, so therefore the goddess will be named Megumi. End of story. Enjoy!
Love is difficult. It can be kind, it can be warm, it can be beautiful.
It can be cruel.
Everyday, I spend my time looking at the red strings that connect one to another. The rich girl in Tokyo tied to the poor boy in Hokkaido. The two girls that sit beside each other in class. The boy who's tied to his girlfriend's best friend. The shinki tied to his master, a beautiful goddess.
These are all ties that will cause pain in order to achieve love. They will hurt their friends, family, and the person they love or loved. But none of these are as painful as the next one.
The god and his human friend, his first follower, a girl who is half Phantom. They are tied by a red string of fate so tightly wrapped that it would be impossible to cut it.
You don't even need to see the thread to tell how much they love each other. The way they look at each other as though the other is the most important person in the world, how both try to hold the other's hand but both are too embarrassed and scared. The only ones who seem unaware of the relationship between the two, the human and the god, are the human and the god themselves. Even the shinki can tell that the two walking with him share a bond that he can never be part of.
At least a shinki will live forever. A human will one day die.
And the god is not able to kill this human. He loves her to much to hurt her. He fears that she will hate him for doing such a thing. He wants to give the girl as normal of a life as possible, without her forgetting him.
The girl fears that she will one day forget the god, whose existence she treasures as much as her own life. She wishes that they could live in a world that allows the two to love each other, without one of the two never being seen by others. She wishes to spend the rest of time with him, but she knows it's impossible. She worries if he'll be okay once she's gone, and what will happen if his one and only follower leaves the human world.
They are star-crossed lovers; lovers whose love will end tragically. The only end is tragic, unless they are saved with a miracle. Something highly, highly unlikely.
It's the saddest thing I've seen since that couple in Venice. What were their names again?
As a love goddess, I wish I could do something. My only wish is to have every pairing I see have a happy ending together. But my job is only to have the two tied to each other meet their other half. There is nothing I can do.
"Megumi, come. There is nothing you can do. We don't need you breaking down like you did that time."
Being called by a higher god, I have no choice but to leave. But looking back at the pair, I can only sigh. I am not able to do anything. It is all up to them.
Please... Don't become a tragedy worse that those two... Romeo and Juliet.
"Hiyori?"
"Yes?"
Yato suddenly calls her name while the two were walking beside each other.
Yato slips his hand into hers. "It'll be all right."
Hiyori smiles sadly. She understands what he means. She's known about the feelings they both hold for each other. They exist in different worlds, though, and it can't be helped.
But if they ever both disappeared, Hiyori wasn't worried. They would be reborn, and love each other again. And even if their love is unable to be granted in the next life, they will reincarnate again and again, until they are able to reach a truly happy ending.
Darn it... I shouldn't cry over my own stories... But I really love Yatori. I'm excited and afraid of how their relationship is going to end up.
