4 YEARS LATER
"Liss! Are they here yet?" I called for the thousandth time from the kitchen. I leaned down and pulled the hot rolls from the oven and placed them carefully on the counter top as I pulled out the plates for dinner tonight. Christmas time was definitely busy in this household. Lissa and I had been cooking all day and Abe, Christian, Dimitri, and my mother had gone out to get the tree and drinks. Mom had gone mostly because she didn't trust Abe to not cause some mayhem in the stores.
"No, not yet. I hope they aren't late." She said and a loud crash sounded from the living room. Her twins were about three now and both as mischievous as their father. Samuel Christian and Sabina Rose were two equal mixes of Lissa and Christian. Sam had blonde hair and blue eyes where Sabina had black hair and green eyes and they were both trouble in their own little way. Needless to say I loved them a lot and Alex loved hanging around them.
"They better not be. I swear to God I will kick their asses if they are late for this dinner. It's Christmas for crying out loud!" I had been up for almost fourteen hours cooking and had been running around trying to get everything perfect, so the lack of sleep was starting to come out.
"They're here, mommy!" Alex called and ran in the kitchen with an armful of groceries, laying them down in the floor and running to his father and grandfather. Christian had gathered up Sabina and Samuel after putting the ice cream in the freezer.
Mom and dad came in not long after that with their hands full of gifts and Dimitri with the tree. After setting it down in the corner, he walked over to me with a bright smile and kissed me on the cheek.
"Be happy you made it on time." I growled and crossed my arms over my chest as he wrapped his arms around my waist.
"Count your blessings is more like it." Lissa added before laying her head on Christian's chest and picking up the rest of the groceries.
Christian snorted and rolled his eyes. "I thought that's what this season was for?"
Lissa rolled her eyes before kissing his cheek and the walked into the living room and placed the presents under our tree, their kids following quickly to get to help decorate.
I picked Alex up and kissed him lightly on the forehead as I placed him between Dimitri and I. "I hope you're hungry."
Alex's eyes shined brightly as he smiled at me and then Dimitri. "Starving!"
My mother then walked in and smiled lightly. "I never thought I'd live to see you cook."
"I never thought I'd learn how to cook." I replied rolling my eyes. Abe wrapped his arms around her and had a mischievous glint in his eyes. "Please, don't go ripping each other's clothes off in the middle of the kitchen. Not today at least."
"Ew!" Alex screamed and ran in the living room with Lissa and Christian.
"No promises." He replied and I felt shivers run all over my spine. I was happy they were in love after all these years but still.
"Time to open presents!" Lissa called and Dimitri grabbed my hand and led me into the living room.
"Sit here, Aunt Rose." Sabina said, leading me to the couch.
"C'mon!" Samuel called and Lissa handed each of the kids a gift. Christian grabbed one and handed it to Alex.
I sat down between Lissa and Dimitri with Alex in my lap as he dug into his gift and I couldn't help but feel the joy that seemed to envelope my heart. Lissa and Christian looked at each other lovingly as Sabina and Samuel gasped at their gifts. My mother and father looked like they were in love all over again and nothing in the past mattered.
I felt Dimitri's arms tighten around me, pulling me closer to him and Alex sat down with Sabina and Samuel. I looked in his eyes and saw everything I needed. My life might not be perfect, but this was worth struggles.
