A lot of you seemed to enjoy the last chapter, which is honestly GREAT because I was so nervous.
Anywhale, here's the epilogue, so enjoy.
Leo's POV
Jen was standing on deck, and I think it was that exact moment that it finally sunk in: Jen was actually leaving.
It was about noon of the day after Jen's claiming, and she was packed and ready to go. I'd moved the ship down to the sea again so Percy could call his hippocampus from underwater. According to him, it'd arrive in a few minutes.
When in doubt, I just replayed that morning. Jen and I had woken up early, at the same time, so we just lay in my bed for what felt like hours, talking and whispering and kissing. It felt like a dream, but I knew for sure it couldn't have been because no way anything in any sort of dream could feel as good as kissing Jen did.
Piper came to find us eventually, though, and this time the whole crew didn't come with her because it was pretty obvious that Jen hadn't been kidnapped. I let Jen go to her room and get ready while I did the same, but when we met again for breakfast she'd sat down next to me and we'd held hands underneath the table.
And now that she was all packed up and ready to go, I wasn't ready to let her go.
'Hey Leo, you all right?' I shook my head to clear it and turned to see Jason heading towards me. I grinned easily at him and got off the mast I was leaning against.
'Yeah, I'm fine,' I said, glancing over at Jen. She was with the rest of the crew, hugging and saying her goodbyes while she waited for Rainbow to show up. Even Coach Hedge muttered something like 'Take care, cupcake' before trudging back down the stairs. 'I just wish she didn't have to go.'
Jason laid a comforting hand on my shoulder. 'Don't worry, man, you'll see her again before you know it.'
'I sure hope so,' I replied. I had to admit I was a little distracted; Aphrodite's blessing hadn't completely worn off Jen yet, and even when she was standing several feet away from me she looked dazzling. 'Just when we got together, too…'
'Why did you guys even wait so long?' Jason asked, raising an eyebrow in curiosity. 'We could all tell you guys were crazy for each other from the very beginning.'
I smiled to myself, then turned to grin at him. 'Good things come to those who wait.' I winked at him, then started to stride over to the small crowd around Jen, Jason following close behind me.
'-and send Drew all my best wishes…' Piper was talking to Jen, probably giving her pointers about camp. Jen nodded seriously, and I bit my lip to stop from laughing.
'Yeah, you do that, but don't go up to her like you're equal or anything,' I added, standing next to Piper and grinning. 'I don't think Piper mentioned that Drew is convinced that she is a goddess, not just the daughter of one.'
Jen laughed–her beautiful hearty laugh that made my insides go fuzzy.
I heard a splash of water behind Jen. Looking over her shoulder, I saw a shiny silver ripple in the water. It took a second for the ripple to turn into an animal, but soon I was able to distinguish a large horse body rising above the surface of the water. It's tail was rainbow colored–which I'm guessing is where his name came from–and it kept splashing around excitedly in the water.
I whistled appreciatively. 'Sweet ride, Jen.'
She grinned, looking down at him next to me. Her hand was resting on mine on the rail. I didn't know how much I'd appreciate tiny gestures like that until they started happening.
'Well, I guess this is me.' Jen turned to meet my eyes, and once again I was struck by her beauty. And the fact that she was leaving. But mainly her beauty.
'Do you…think you guys can give us a minute?' I turned to the rest of the crew behind us, trying to communicate with my eyes as best I could. Please let me say goodbye alone.
'Sure, Leo,' Hazel said. Slowly, they started to file past us and down the stairs, each patting Jen on the back as they went past. Piper went last, and pulled Jen into a quick hug before following everyone else down the stairs and shutting the hatch behind her.
Jen turned to me. Her eyes sparkled, her face glowed, and her smile was dazzling. 'I'm so glad that this happened when it did. I mean, I don't want to leave, but at least we're together now.' She dropped her bag full of clothes, including Aphrodite's blessing dress, and stepped closer to me. Her arms slunk around my neck as mine slowly made their way to her waist. 'I'm so glad I can call you mine now.'
I smiled, and then I kissed her softly. My head was immediately filled with sparks. 'You don't know how long I waited for you to say that.'
She smiled at me and I rested my forehead against hers. 'Just remember, when you get to camp, look for my sister Nyssa. Hopefully she'll kind of take you under her wing, especially if you tell her you're my girlfriend.' I paused and thought for a moment. 'Actually, you might wanna repeat that to her a few times. I don't think it'll settle with her the first time through.'
Jen laughed. 'Noted.'
'Listen, don't…just don't forget about me, okay?' I hesitantly said, staring straight into her ever-changing eyes. I was immediately reminded of all the boys at Camp Half-Blood who were super heroic and put together and suddenly thought I was nothing in comparison. 'When you go to camp, I mean…and there'll be other boys. Don't forget me.'
Jen started to laugh again, but it quickly faded away when she saw that I was serious. 'Oh, Leo…' She shook her head, pursing her lip. 'Leo, I'd forget my own name before I forgot you.'
I couldn't stop myself from grinning in spite of myself. 'Promise?'
'I love you Leo. You and me, forever.'
'Forever,' I agreed, moving forward to kiss her again. However, I saw the hatch open out of the corner of my eye, and I quickly redirected it to her nose. I hoped none of the crew had seen, but they were already on deck.
'C'mon Leo!' Percy laughed. 'She's leaving! Is that the best you can do?'
I felt heat rush to my cheeks. Something about me didn't want to kiss Jen–really kiss her–in front of everyone. I settled for a quick peck on her lips.
Jason booed. Immature. 'You can do better than that, Repair Boy!'
I felt the heat rush to my cheeks again. My eyes glued to my feet. This is so embarrassing.
Finally, I heard Jen go, 'Oh, for crying out loud.' Then she grabbed my shirt collar in both her hands and kissed me. Not just a light kiss either. Her lips came to life under mine and the crew started to cheer and laugh and she drew closer to me and I wanted her to stay, oh gods I wanted her to stay…
It was over too soon. Jen pulled her lips from mine, slightly out of breath, staring into my eyes like she could see straight through me.
'I love you.' It came out in a whisper, and I'm not sure if I said it to her, or she said it to me, or if we'd both said it to each other at the same time.
Jen smiled, taking a step away from me and stooping to pick up her bag. The rope ladder was already down behind her, and she put one hand on the railing. 'Go save the world for me, Leo Valdez.'
'Will do, Jen Miller.'
She started to climb down the ladder, into the world of the unknown, her hair blowing in the breeze. It was then that I leaned over and said to her, 'I swear it on the River Styx.'
And hence the oath to keep with a final breath was born (bc I cut Calypso out of my story oops)
ANYWHALE! IT'S OVER OMG BRB IMMA GO CRY
K I'm back. Info for the future:
• I will be writing a sequel. It will be set just a few months after the end of BOO, in Jen's school, but I don't want to give away any more than that. Also, it'll be out in…hold on to your hats here…September because I need to finalize a plan and actually get a head start writing it. Good things come to those who wait, right?
• I will upload this story onto Wattpad. I actually started doing that a while ago but I got carried away actually writing it so now there are only two chapters up. Oops.
• I'm thinking about going back and deleting my author's notes. *gasp*. Not all of it, though, just the parts where I blab on unnecessarily. It'll make a lot less words on the story. I dunno though…leave advice in the reviews ;)
• I'm also thinking of writing another story that's not fanfiction. It'll be a teen fiction and it will probably be as cheesy as this one. Maybe less. Idk. But it'll probably be out at the same time as the sequel.
THAT'S ALL FOR NOW. FOLLOW ME TO KNOW WHEN THE SEQUEL AND/OR MY OWN STORY COME OUT.
AND FOR THE LAST TIME IN A WHILE…
…PEACE OUT, FISH TROUT.
