Chapter Ten

Tamsin was standing outside the Dal, thinking things through. She knew what she needed to do, she knew what she was going to do, and Bo wasn't going to stop it. She didn't know if spending what time she had left with the Succubus was a good idea, sure it's pretty much all she had thought about for a while and it would make her happier than she'd been, but what about the feelings that would come afterwards. Leaving Bo to rescue Kenzi. Deep down she knew Bo could never love her, not in the way she wanted, but she also knew her leaving was going to hurt Bo.

While she was standing outside Lauren arrived. As the doctor walked over to the Dal Tamsin took a deep breath, she was going to have to control herself. She knew what Bo had said to Lauren, but she also knew that Lauren wasn't going to accept it. Tamsin knew that Lauren had many issues with the Fae, she blamed them for a lot that had happened in her life, everything she had lost. Now Tamsin was added to that list because of Bo.

"Look, Tamsin," Lauren started to say, "I don't like you, and you don't like me, but we both care for Bo. I don't want to see her get hurt."

Tamsin laughed.

"What's so funny?" Lauren asked.

"It's just, you claim not to want to see her get hurt, yet that's all you do," Tamsin said, pushing herself away from the wall she was leaning against, "you constantly lie to her."

"It's for her own benefit." Lauren replied.

"No," Tamsin said, "it's really not… I might not know much about love, or family, or even having friends for that matter, but even I know that honesty is always in everyone's best interests. So I'm going to be honest with you. Do I know what's going to happen between me and Bo? No I don't. Do I know that whatever it is will probably hurt her for a while after I've left? Yes, but I'll do everything I can to make sure that doesn't happen."

"If you don't want to hurt her you'll walk away now," Lauren said, "before it goes any further. She isn't going to love you Tamsin, she couldn't. You'll just be fooling yourself."

"I know she'll never love me Lauren," Tamsin said, walking towards the door to the Dal, "you really think I'm stupid enough to think that she ever would… But if she's with me, she's not with you, and that scares you more than anything. The only chance you stand to get her back is accepting who and what she is Lauren. You can't tame a Succubus, all your science should have told you that."

With that Tamsin walked back into the Dal without saying another word to the doctor.

Dyson was sitting at the bar with Lauren while Tamsin and Bo played a game of pool. Bo wasn't doing as badly as Dyson thought she would, but he was pretty sure Tamsin was going easy on her. He couldn't ignore the look on Lauren's face as she watched the two girls laughing.

"You okay there Lauren?" he asked.

"What if she knew…?" Lauren said, glancing over at Dyson before turning her attention back to the pool table.

"What if who knew what?" Dyson asked.

"What if Tamsin knew what was going to happen…?" Lauren asked.

"What?" Dyson asked in reply, starting to get more and more confused by Lauren's crazy talk.

"Hear me out," Lauren said looking at the wolf, "I know it sounds crazy, but what if Tamsin took the bounty before she traded Rainer's soul to Trick, what if this whole thing has been one big job for Tamsin. What if the end job wasn't delivering Bo… what if the final job was using Bo to free Rainer, leading to him coming back to this realm?"

"You're right," Dyson said, "it does sound crazy. If this was a job why didn't she remember?"

"The same reason that she didn't remember trapping Rainer's soul in the first place," Lauren said, "Trick wiped her memories Dyson, if she didn't remember making the trade or even meeting Trick, chances are she doesn't remember much from before it. Think about it, maybe the guy who hired her knew Trick would wipe her memories, maybe it was afterwards that he re-approached her about the bounty on Bo. Or maybe it was before, and meeting Bo somehow triggered something so she remembered parts of the previous job…"

"You seriously need to get some sleep Lauren." Dyson said, "I know you don't like the idea of Bo and Tamsin getting close, but this is ridiculous."

That night Tamsin stayed at the Clubhouse with Bo, both had agreed they would just sleep. Tamsin found that she slept better with Bo close to her than at any other time in her life. It was the closest she came to feeling safe enough to actually sleep. Valkyrie's never fully turned off, they were always alert to sounds, but with Bo Tamsin felt she could actually sleep. Again she dreamt of Valhalla.

Walking through the halls that she remembered so well Tamsin couldn't help but feel very out of place. It had been a very long time since she had actually walked these halls, when she was called to Valhalla to talk to Kenzi it had been to one room, this was different. As she made her way towards the Great Hall other Valkyrie's moved out of her way, standing with their backs to the wall giving Tamsin more than enough room to pass them. Some whispered, some pointed, Tamsin ignored them all. She was obviously there for a reason. Entering the Great Hall she found out why. Freya had called her. The Queen of the Valkyries sat in the centre of the hall, which was empty, Tamsin never remembered the hall being empty.

"Why did you call me here?" Tamsin asked, standing in the doorway.

"Sit." Freya replied, motioning to the seat opposite her.

Tamsin did as she was told. Freya was her Queen, Tamsin had been raised to show respect where respect was due. Walking over to the table, she sat down opposite Freya.

"Drink?" Freya asked.

"No," Tamsin replied, "thank you."

"Acacia sent word that you're planning a little visit." Freya said.

Tamsin didn't know what to say, she hadn't expected Acacia to go to Freya.

"Kenzi doesn't belong here." Tamsin eventually said.

"You delivered her here Tamsin," Freya replied, "You're the one who brought her here."

"She died a warrior's death…" Tamsin said, "She died in battle… she…"

"You do not need to justify it to me child," Freya said, "If it hadn't been agreed then her soul would have been cast out. For you to enter Valhalla you are going to have to go through a few… tests."

"Tests?" Tamsin asked.

"You want to enter into Valhalla, you have to pass the tests," Freya said, "There will be 4 tests, all progressively harder. You get to bring two people with you, two people you trust. The tests will be both physical tests, which I do not expect you to struggle with, and emotional tests, which is where I am expecting you to fail."

"I brought Rainer's soul here," Tamsin said, "that was the reason I was banished, it has been put right."

"And you think that is simply enough?" Freya asked, "You betrayed everything you are as a Valkyrie Tamsin, you went against the one rule we have. If you are assigned a soul, you bring that soul when that person dies, you do not trade that soul with the Blood King to extend your own life and condemn someone to a life on the Death Train."

"I messed up," Tamsin said, "I know that, but I am trying to make it right."

"For who Tamsin?" Freya asked, "Kenzi told you she doesn't need to be rescued. She told you that she doesn't want you to come here."

"She said she didn't want Bo to come here." Tamsin replied.

"Ah, the Succubus," Freya said, "of course… I expect that I will eventually meet the woman who apparently has stolen the heart of the strongest Valkyrie I've ever met."

Tamsin didn't say anything, she didn't have to, Freya knew what she was thinking.

"Love isn't a weakness Tamsin," Freya said, "for a warrior it is, for a Valkyrie it isn't. It makes you stronger, it gives you something to fight for. You no longer belong here Tamsin, you belong with her. You're willing to give all that up?"

"I have to do the right thing." Tamsin replied.

Freya simply nodded in reply as Tamsin started to wake up.
