Y'all! This is it! The official last chapter of the "prequel" story! I apologize if it seems rushed or abrupt at all. During this quarantine, I've had a lot of time to marathon and binge our favorite show and it's really brought a spark back to me about these characters. I have a lot of new ideas instead of what I was originally going to do for the future of this story and I'm really excited to bring it to life!
There will be one more chapter of sorts into this story, but it will be an epilogue that I think I will also add to the official story as a prologue so those who don't want to HAVE to read this story won't be forced to. I've really enjoyed diving into these OC's backstories and they've really stretched and grew my writing abilities and have taught me a lot about development. So, if nothing else, this story serves as my writing lessons lol.
Anyway, on to the story! It's completely Jenni-centered, but the epilogue will include more to see where our characters will be introduced into the Walking Dead world!
It had been hours since Daniel left to try and retrieve Jason and to say Jenni was nervous would be an understatement. She felt sick to her stomach ever since he left and she wasn't sure if it was from the nerves, morning sickness, or a combination of the two. She felt like something bad was going to happen, but she tried to push her paranoia away when the kids finished their activities and chores for the day and joined her for dinner.
Caleb and Billy chattered about their friends and the games they played while Jamie kept quiet and kept her eye on Jenni. It blew her away how insightful and observant the 13-year-old was, but some days she wished for innocent ignorance like the boys.
"Mama? Are you gonna eat?" Caleb finally tore away from his thrilling conversation of fart jokes when he noticed that her plate was untouched.
Jenni just smiled and forced herself to push her thoughts away and brushed his curls away from his face. "I don't really feel well, baby. If you want it, you take it. Share it between the three of y'all."
Caleb wrinkled his nose at Jenni's portion of mushy pasta and bland sauce. "I didn't even like what I had…"
"Jenni, are you okay? You should eat." Jamie popped in now with genuine concern, but she knew it was laced with probing curiosity.
Jenni rested her hand on her cheek and tried to hide the fact that she was covering her nose from the smell wafting through their makeshift mess hall. "Yeah, I'm fine...I just...I'm not really hungry." Her rumbling stomach said that was a lie, but she felt the bile make an appearance any time she thought about taking a bite.
"When's Daddy gonna be home, Mama? He said we would play when he wasn't busy." Caleb piped back in and changed the conversation, looking up at his mother with big blue, puppy dog eyes.
Jenni felt her stomach do a flip at his question and she placed her hand on top of his little one on top of the table. "I don't know, baby. Hopefully soon."
"I hope so, too." Caleb looped his hand through his mother's and laid his head on her arm.
The moment was cut short at the sound of an engine running and the gate creaking open. Jenni's heart started racing because it only meant one thing. Daniel was back. He and Jason's group were the only ones out and the group wasn't supposed to be back for a while.
Placing a kiss on the top of Caleb's head. "Stay here, I'll be right back."
Jamie jumped up to follow, but Jenni threw up a hand. "No, stay here with the boys. I'll be back. Eat my food."
"But I wanna go with you. I wanna see what's up!" Jamie protested, crossing her arms.
Jenni let out a breath and swallowed back nausea she was feeling standing in the heat. "I said I'll be back. You'll know what's up when I tell you."
Jamie wanted to argue, opened her mouth to do just that, but gave up and complied with Jenni's order. Jenni nodded once and took off towards the main gate where she knew Daniel would be rolling in.
Jenni wasn't the only one with the idea as she saw others leave their post and slowly trail over to the front. The last they knew, nobody was supposed to roll in their front door for another few days. Natural curiosity and concern was the mutual consensus.
Hushed conversations filled the air as Jenni ran up to the gate just as Daniel's Jeep rolled through and came to a stop. Jenni waited for the others to roll through, but the gate was closed as soon as it was opened. Her sense of unease evolved into complete fear as the driver's side door slowly opened.
Daniel reluctantly pulled himself out of the vehicle and ducked his head, unable to meet the eyes of the crowd surrounding him. He dug his gun out of its holster and gave it to one of the men guarding the gate and shut his door.
The first thing Jenni saw was the blood staining his clothes, his arms. Blood even splattered over his boots. She silently prayed that another door would open and her fears would just be nothing but a bad thought, but no other door opened.
Daniel visibly shook and his eyes frantically looked around in hopes of finding anything else to look at except his bloody arms. His eyes met Jenni's in his search and he locked onto her. Fresh tears welled in his eyes and he stumbled over his words trying to say her name.
Seeing the absolute panic in his eyes, Jenni made her way up to him as the hushed conversations picked up. Her heart sank into her stomach with every step and she wished the world would just swallow her whole right there before she made it to Daniel. She could hear the sobs choking him as she got closer to him and she knew what was wrong before he ever spoke a word.
"J...Jen...I-I...I tried…" Daniel managed through his sobs and stopped when she got just a couple of feet in front of him.
Jenni wanted nothing more than to run away, but instead, she reached out and placed her hands on his shoulders, grounding him and, hopefully, helping him calm down enough to explain.
"What happened, Daniel?" Jenni asked, her hair looping around her shoulders and providing a curtain, blocking the faces of the audience from her view.
Jenni could see the tears struggling to hold on in his bright blue eyes as the story ran through in his mind. Daniel's chest rose and fell heavily as he forced himself to find the words to speak.
"I tried, Jenni...I really, really tried...When I found them...They were attacked, a horde of the dead was on them. Some of our men were already down and my brother was fighting. He tried to protect everyone, but he couldn't protect himself…" His voice cracked with emotion and he had to gulp back his sobs, "I saw him go down first. He was swarmed...Devon was next, he was trying to help my brother, but he just wasn't strong enough…"
A woman behind them burst into mournful tears at the news and Jenni assumed she was related to Devon somehow.
The tears lost their battle and began to flow down his face. "I was fighting with Jason at the very end...He fought hard...He was a hero...He sacrificed himself for me...Told me to go, run, make it back home before it was too late...He told me to take care of you, Jenni…"
Jenni felt like the wind was knocked out of her and her legs wobbled, struggling to keep herself standing. He was lying...He had to be…
Daniel wrapped his arms around her when he noticed how feeble she looked and forced her to look into his eyes. "He asked me to take care of you and the kids. To watch over you as my own...To make sure his new baby has a good life…"
Jenni's heart raced and the blood in her veins ran cold. Jason knew...Daniel let him know just before…
Reaching up and tucking the loose strands of hair behind her ear, Daniel dug into his pocket and opened one of Jenni's trembling hands. "I...It's his…"
Jenni looked down and knew what it was before she ever caught a glimpse of it. She had helped him pick it out…
No one but you
That was her breaking point. She remembered when he first uttered those words to her, right after he told her he loved her for the first time. He paid the extra price to have it engraved on his wedding band. His special promise, until the day he died…
Her legs finally gave out and she crashed to her knees, cradling the ring to her chest, as the sobs tore through her. She didn't care who saw or who heard it anymore. He was gone...The future he wanted was gone…
Daniel followed her and brought her closer to him, holding her in his lap and ran his hand up and down her back in an attempt to soothe her. He could see Jamie holding back Billy and Caleb with tears in her eyes. The boys were visibly concerned and confused at the sight of their mother wailing and moaning on the ground and Jamie struggled to keep Caleb away.
Holding her close and catching Caleb's big, sad eyes, Daniel knew what he had to do. He had to uphold his promise to him. Jason's family was his family now and he wasn't going to let anything tear them apart.
It had been almost a week since Jason's death and Jenni felt enraged. The camp lived in fear because their little army, all the men that defended the camp, were all gone. Not everyone was trained, only a small handful. Families had to mourn at empty graves. Caleb had to mourn an empty grave…
Jenni wiped the tears from her eyes as she remembered her precious little boy breaking down in complete sorrow at the news of his father's death. All the hope given to him was ripped away in one cruel stroke. She knew she would never forget the look in his eyes, the look of complete hopelessness that was beyond his short years.
It shouldn't be this way. Her son shouldn't be mourning his father at such a young age. Jamie and Billy shouldn't be feeling the returned pain of losing someone so close to them again. She shouldn't have to be pregnant and alone when the one person who wanted it most was gone…
She knew what she had to do and no one was going to stop her. She didn't care if she had to do it alone with just her wits and good intentions. If it killed her, then it killed her. Daniel would take care of her kids if she failed.
Picking up the bag she packed and throwing it over her shoulder, Jenni walked over to where the kids were still sleeping in the tent and placed a kiss on each forehead. She tucked Caleb in tight and fought off the tears welling in her eyes when she saw him cuddling one of Jason's shirts.
Storming out of the tent before she could talk herself out of it, she stepped into the misty morning of the day and thanked God not many people were awake yet. Those in the kitchen had been up for a while and those in the garden were crawling out of their tents and tending to the crops that were starting to grow. She knew Daniel was stalking around somewhere and she just hoped that she would miss him.
She waved at those who greeted her and smiled politely at those who just didn't know what to say and went on her way. Her hand hovered over the knife at her hip, hoping it wasn't obvious that she was trying to make a break for it. The less conflict she had the better.
She spotted Daniel's shaggy brown hair at the front gate and cursed. She should've known she was going to have to put up with him.
"Jen? Wh-What are you doing?" He asked as she approached the lookout post and eyed the bag on her shoulder.
Jenni looked up at him and shaded her eyes from the sun that was already reigning down on them with her hand. "Out? Got any more questions or are you going to let me by?"
"Yeah. Where the hell you think you're going?"
Jenni rolled her eyes. "I'm not your wife, Daniel. And you sure as hell ain't my daddy, so I'd appreciate it if you'd mind your damn business and let me through."
Daniel cocked a brow, but made his way over to the ladder. Jenni shook her head as she waited for him to climb down and tower over her. "Jenni, it's dangerous out there. Corpses are everywhere out there. It ain't like it was even a few weeks ago. It's getting worse...and you don't need to go out anymore."
She knew it made sense and he was only looking out for her, but she didn't want to hear it. "I can take care of myself, Daniel. Before I even found Jason again, I took care of myself and three children. I'm not scared of what's out there."
"Why are you going out, Jenni...Maybe I can help you. Watch your back out there." He pressed, looping the rifle he carried around to his back so he could reach out and grab her arm.
Jenni tensed at his touch and retracted from him. "I have to find him, Daniel...My son deserves a proper burial of his father. I...I need to see him…"
Daniel squared his shoulders as realization and fear sank in. "Jen, it's too dangerous. The place was overrun...and we...we don't even know if he's still there. If any of them are. You don't need to see that."
"Then take me there. I'll have protection and I'll get to see if for myself. I have to know, Daniel. Please, don't take that closure away from me…" Jenni shifted her weight to her right foot and crossed her arms.
Daniel shook his head as he contemplated it and let out a breath through his nose. "I dunno, Jen...Our people need me here. They need us both here. To defend this place."
"Rebecca could take your place for a while. It's only for a few hours. Don't even need to waste the gas with a car, we'll go on foot. I just need to get there, see him for myself, and go home. That's all I'm asking."
Daniel ran his hand through his hair and sighed. "Fine. We'll leave in 5, just give me a second to gather my stuff."
Jenni smirked and took a deep breath. "Okay. I'll be right here."
The walk was quiet except for Daniel giving direction. They were about an hour out and the sun was merciless as the humidity set in. Jenni was beginning to regret not finding anything to munch on before she left as the heat made her feel nauseous. As per typical Daniel behavior, he kept her well hydrated every 30 minutes.
She knew the kids would be confused and upset, but she knew she couldn't tell them what she was doing. They'd want to come and Jenni just couldn't risk having them out here for something like this. She couldn't have Caleb see his father and their friends like that. She wanted him to remember his father the way he did now. Not some mauled version of the kind, loving man he was.
"How much farther?" Jenni looked over to Daniel at her side and asked, handing the bottle of water back to him. She had already finished hers because of his incessant nagging and now he made her work on his.
"About another 30...maybe 45 minutes. They didn't get very far out…" Daniel answered, twisting the cap shut and turning to face her.
"I could've done this by myself, you know. You and Becca could've both been on lookout."
Daniel shook his head. "No, you don't need to be out here. Especially not alone. You're in no condition,"
Jenni scoffed. "I'm still early, Daniel. We don't know what could happen. I can still do things and I'm not going to stop doing things just because of the baby. We don't get that luxury anymore."
"Jenni, I just think-"
"Well, well, well...what have we here?"
Jenni spun around at the voice behind her and yanked her knife out at the ready. A man aimed his pistol down at them with a friendly, smug grin on his face. He oozed charm and charisma, but Jenni only sensed danger as another man, shorter and heavy-set, appeared at his side.
"Who the hell are you?" Jenni growled, holding her knife at her chest, ready to strike if anyone got close.
"Now, hold on, darlin'. We's just come to say hello s'all. Don't see a lot of pretty faces like yours no more…" The man cocked his head and looked her up and down with a malicious look in his eye.
"What do you want?" Jenni pressed with a snarl.
"Jen…" Daniel warned, holding his hands high in surrender with an obvious fear making his voice waver.
The man chuckled and gave her a smile. "Jen...pretty name for a pretty lady...Tell me, Jen, where is it you fine folks call home? You don't carry much and you sounded like you're on a mission just a minute ago. Nice to know about neighbors out here."
"It ain't none of your concern." Jenni ground out and ignored the pleading look on Daniel's face.
"Now, Jen, that ain't very neighborly now, is it? How's about a little southern hospitality, huh?" The man cocked his gun and took a step closer towards Jenni.
"It's the old fairgrounds! It ain't much and we're all just trying to get by. Please, don't touch her…" Daniel jumped in before Jenni could say a word.
Anger boiled hot within her and she turned and glared at Daniel.
"Now, that wasn't so hard now, was it? My name's Roy..and I appreciate your cooperation." The man, Roy, smiled and moved the gun over to Daniel and pulled the trigger.
"No!" Jenni cried out as soon as the bullet left the gun and she watched Daniel go down, clutching his shoulder.
Before she could get to him, a pair of arms wrapped around her as she saw Roy make his way over to Daniel who moaned and wailed at the gunshot. Jenni fought against the arms, but they had the advantage. They countered every squirm and every kick.
So, Jenni peered down at the flesh of the man's arm and bit down as hard as she could. She cringed at the taste of his blood in her mouth, but she didn't stop until she felt him throw her to the ground and cry out in pain.
"Stupid, little bitch!"
Roy's man grabbed her as she attempted to crawl towards Daniel and flipped her around, grabbing her by the neck. Jenni clawed and slapped against his hold and she could hear Daniel's pleas as the pounding of her heart grew louder and louder.
Clearly done with the easy, the man tightened his grip around her throat and lifted her head, only to smash it down against the pavement. Jenni's ears began to ring and white specks flooded her vision. She still fought against his grip.
The man grabbed her by the throat again and slammed her head down against the pavement harder this time. Jenni couldn't keep her eyes open this time and she looked over at Daniel as Roy looked him over and grabbed him by the arm.
"You'll do. Leave her. She ain't looking so pretty anymore…"
She wanted to scream, to drag herself off the pavement, but the darkness was stronger and she just wanted to sleep. The last thing she remembered hearing was the sound of her name and Daniel's wails as Roy irritated his wound.
Jenni awoke sometime later with a splitting, throbbing headache and felt the sun burning her skin. It was hotter and the sun set higher in the sky. It must've been hours later. Panic filled her heart that pounded in her ears.
"Daniel? Daniel!" She hollered for the man she knew was nowhere around. She had no idea if he was even alive…
The fairgrounds. Daniel told them, told Roy, about the fairgrounds. What if they took Daniel and paid a visit? Her children were there…
"Oh, God, no...please, no…" Jenni scrambled to her feet and took off running. Her head was still pounding and everything hurt, but her fear channeled an adrenaline rush that was enough to push her forward. Her kids, her babies...What was she thinking leaving them alone?
She prayed for mercy. Prayed that she was wrong and that her new home was untouched. She wanted Daniel to be okay and safe, but she wanted her children's well-being more. If they were okay and safe, she could figure out a way to get Daniel back. To take down Roy and his men.
She couldn't help but imagine what could have possibly happened while she was unconscious. She was lucky to still even be alive. She thanked whoever was listening for one more chance to keep her kids safe. Now, she just had to get back alive.
She wished she would've taken the time to wait until the kids were awake. To explain exactly what was going on and why she had to do it. Why they had to stay home while she was gone. She could've hugged them each and gave them a proper goodbye. They wouldn't be questioning where their mother was and why she left without a word. Why she didn't bother to wake them and tell them goodbye herself.
Tears welled in her eyes at the thought and she had to rush it out of her head. They had to be alright, they just had to. She wouldn't live with herself if they weren't. Jamie was a survivor, she was quick on her feet and didn't let fear fog her mind. She protected Billy and she would do the same for Caleb. They were safe, all three of them.
She let the thought of reuniting with them power her, her short, curvy legs pumped harder with every step. The muscles screamed for relief from the exertion, but she knew how to push past them. She almost smiled at the thought, but she was thankful for those dance lessons and recitals during her childhood for they taught her to keep pushing no matter how much it hurt. The strength and endurance she had were there, she just had to awaken it.
The hour walk turned into a 45-minute run and she found herself at the front of the gates. What stood tall and ominous when she first arrived now hung open with a broken lock. She could hear growls from inside the gate and her heart sank deeper. It was gone, their new home, she knew it was.
"Caleb! Jamie, Billy!" Jenni shrieked in between her labored breaths, standing at the mouth of the opened gate, too scared to finally step in.
The growls became louder at her terrified cries, but she didn't care. She reached for her knife at her hip but came up empty. One of Roy's men must've knocked it out of her hands when he tackled her to the ground.
"Shit!" She cursed, looking frantically for a weapon. If they were still even there…
Jenni took a step back and searched the ground around her. Her legs wobbled underneath her as she dived for a stone propped up against the wall. It would require her to get close, but it would have to do. She had to find her kids.
Taking a deep breath, Jenni stumbled her way into the camp, her family's sanctuary, and felt her breath catch in her throat at the sight. Corpses riddled the fairgrounds and most of them were familiar faces. She tried to find Daniel's face amongst the herd but was thrown off when one of the dead swooped around and grabbed her arm.
She stumbled back, trying to yank her arm out of the Corpse's grasp and pushed it back by the neck. The smell of death and rot radiating off of it filled her nostrils and she had to push back the wave of nausea threatening to wash over her. Jenni bit down on her lip and finally broke her arm free from its grasp.
Jenni looked up at it to aim the stone and realized it bore a very familiar face. The bright red hair appeared darker with the fresh blood matted into her hair and the angry smirk was long gone and replaced with desperation as she snapped her teeth at her.
"Becca…" Jenni breathed as the reanimated Rebecca snarled impatiently, pushing against Jenni's grip.
She had no time to sit and mourn the loss, she had to find the kids. Raising the stone above her head, she put her full force into the swing and smashed it into Becca's face.
The reanimated Becca crumbled to the ground, but it wasn't over. Jenni was already gaining attention from a few others, she didn't have the time to get down and finish it that way.
"I'm so sorry…" Jenni breathed as she stepped around her corpse and lifted her boot over Becca's bloodied face and stomped until she quit moving.
Jenni's chest rose and fell as she breathed hard, looking around the field for any sign of her kids or even Daniel. "Caleb! Jamie, Billy! Mommy's back!"
Two Corpses made their way towards her and she took a running start to the nearest one, ramming her shoulder into his decaying chest. Just like Becca, this one stumbled to the ground and she used the stone to smash its brains in.
Before she had a chance ready herself, the other one that was a step behind fell onto her and nearly bit its disgusting teeth into her neck. Jenni cried and she felt the tears finally begin to stream as she pushed and fought against its flailing limbs and gnashing teeth.
She managed to slip her foot farther and farther up until she finally had it lodged into its waist and heaved it off with all her might. Everything was screaming in pain now and for a split second, she feared for her unborn child, but she didn't have the luxury of slowing down. Being torn apart by these undead freaks definitely wasn't any better for her baby, either.
Before it had the chance to regain its composure, Jenni grabbed her rock and climbed on top of the Corpse and finished him off. The field was decently clear now, dead bodies littered the camp and she knew she didn't have much time. The Corpses she put down, Becca, they didn't have bite wounds.
It was easy to put two and two together and realized that Roy and his men attacked. They were defenseless and, because of it, the camp was gone. She didn't understand how they turned without being bitten, but she didn't have time to think about the science of it all.
"Kids! It's okay, it's me! Please...where are you?" Tears clouded her vision and sobs choked her voice. Where were they?
Jenni stumbled along and searched amongst the dead for familiar faces, for her familiar faces. She saw a few from the camp she remembered seeing, but never knew their names. The guilt stabbed at her and her hands shook at her side. They took her in, gave her family shelter, and she never even bothered to learn their names.
"Caleb, baby? Where are you?" She cried out again but got no response.
Coming along the tents, Jenni saw a Corpse huddled over something, feasting on its remains. Tears blurred her vision, but she knew she had to check. The hope she had for finding her children alive was fading, but she had to know. She had to see.
"Hey!" Jenni gathered the Corpse's attention and it turned at her command. Bloody entrails hung out of its mouth and was between its grubby fingers. Whatever or whoever it found, it was definitely making a feast out of them.
Jenni waited for it to get close to her before she stepped out and kicked its knee, bringing it down into a better execution position and smashed its skull in. Jenni groaned at the cracking, squishing sound and the blood that squirted onto her shirt and she couldn't hold back the bile building up.
Tears pooled in her eyes as she vomited the little bit of water she had in her system and her stomach heaved at its emptiness. All she wanted to do was crumble and lay there, but she couldn't. She refused. Wiping her eyes with the little strip of fabric on her sleeve that was untouched, Jenni looked up and spotted a little shoe on a little foot.
Her breath caught in the back of her throat and she wanted to scream. Those were Billy's shoes...The same shoes she had to tie over and over again because he refused to do it right. The laces were completely undone and smothered in blood.
"Billy…" She breathed out, barely a whisper, as she approached the little body the Corpse had been feasting on.
Her utter fear was correct as she looked upon Billy's lifeless face, painted with blood and streaked in tears. Jenni felt like her body was shutting down. Her blood ran cold and her legs felt stiff as she stood there in utter horror. An ungodly groan escaped her lips as she crashed to her knees and grabbed his arm, hoping just maybe he would spring to life at her touch.
"No...no...Billy…" Tears poured as she reached up and brushed the matted hair out of his eyes and wiped at the blood smeared on his cold cheeks.
Jenni's eyes trailed down to his stomach where she found it tore open and blood and intestines pooling out and onto the ground around him. She left him and now he was gone...Left to die a horrible, tragic death wondering where Jenni was to protect him.
Jenni broke at that moment. Her sorrow couldn't be contained any longer as a blood-curdling shriek left her lips and she reached down to take Billy's body into her arms and cradled him to her chest. She didn't care about the blood and innards that were now stained onto her skin and clothes.
She didn't care about the attention she drew and the fact that a few nearby Corpses turned at her mournful cries. She could hear their growls over her sobs and cries, but she didn't care. Her children were gone...Her husband was gone...She couldn't live in this world without them...She wouldn't… Jenni held her eyes shut and cradled Billy closer as she heard the snarls grow louder and more agitated as the Corpse approached her.
Bang!
Jenni's grip on Billy loosened and she opened her eyes, looking down at her body for a bullet wound. That's when she noticed the growling had stopped. Daniel? Had he finally reappeared and found her on the verge of death?
"Jenni!"
Jenni's heart leaped at the sound and she turned her head behind her where the sound originated from.
Jamie stood with the door to the infirmary cracked open and stood with one of the lookout's guns. She was alive…
"Come on! Hurry!"
Jamie was right. She had only so much time until Billy turned and the rest of the camp outnumbered them. Placing a kiss on Billy's matted locks, she forced herself to her feet and made a beeline for the infirmary where Jamie awaited with the door opened wide enough for her to enter.
Her legs ached after a moment of rest, but now was not the time to start getting comfortable. Jamie was alive, she still had a reason, a purpose…
Jenni's legs finally gave up as she passed over the threshold and she crumbled to the ground as Jamie slammed the door behind her.
"Mommy!"
Jenni broke into tears at the little voice that emerged from the darkness and wrapped its little arms around. She felt Caleb's curly head tuck itself into her shoulder and she clung to him like he was her last life source. In a sense, he was.
The pair sat there, arms wrapped tight around each other, tears staining each other's clothes, and Jenni placed a kiss on his face when she looked up at Jamie and pulled her into the embrace.
"I'm so sorry, I'm so sorry, baby...Thank God...Oh, thank God, you're alive…" She breathed out in relief and showered them both in kisses. They were alive…
Jamie pulled away and her big brown eyes were filled with tears as she looked into Jenni's. "Billy...I tried to help him, but..." She couldn't say anymore as she burst into sobs that Jenni knew she had been holding back.
"I know, baby, I know...I'm never going to leave you again, you hear? I'll never leave you two ever again...Someone'll have to kill me to tear me away from you both…" Jenni vowed as she embraced them both and smoothed their hair as they cried onto her shoulders.
Jenni allowed them to have the moment, but she knew they were going to have to leave soon. She had no idea where to go next, but she needed to find somewhere safe. They couldn't stay out here in the middle of this graveyard.
"Baby, we're gonna have to go. I'm sorry, but it's not safe here anymore. We need to get far, far away and find somewhere safe." Jenni pulled away from them both and wiped the tears on Caleb's cheek.
"Where's somewhere safe?" Caleb asked with a hitch in his throat.
Jenni pushed the hair away from his eyes and held back the tears she was feeling. "I don't know, baby...but we need to go and we need to go now."
Jamie wiped her eyes and nodded bravely. "She's right, Caleb, we gotta find a new home…" She reached down and took Caleb's hand in her, giving it a squeeze when she saw the tears in his eyes. "Mom's going to keep us safe now."
Jenni wanted to promise them the world, that this would never happen again, but she knew she couldn't. She couldn't promise them anything anymore…"C'mon, kids, take my hands and be prepared to run and don't stop until I say so no matter how scary it is. You're both braver than you think, we can do this!"
Caleb grabbed a hold of Jenni's hand and clung to it for dear life, nodding once as he hugged himself to her side. Jenni gulped down her fear and reached out to open the door, preparing herself for the site ahead of her and her children's reactions.
Jenni didn't give them time to really take in as she immediately tightened her grasp on their hands and took off towards the gate. She had no idea where Roy and his men went after this, but she knew one thing. Stay far away from the main road. Their best chance was going deep into the woods. At least for now.
Caleb whimpered seeing all the Corpses, but she didn't allow him to sit there. She'd carry him and run if that was what it took, but she was getting them all out of there alive today. She refused to lose anyone else.
Jumping over Becca's corpse, Jenni barreled out through the gate and made a beeline for the woods. She had no idea what laid ahead of them and if they'd even last the night, but she was certain of one thing.
Caleb was alive. Jamie was alive. For now, her unborn child was still there and Jenni was determined to fight like hell to keep it that way.
