The Apple Game

Never bite the hand that feeds you. That's what they say, except Ryuk's shark-like fangs were constantly under Light's skin.

Neither of them cared much about the situation, so long as Ryuk got his apples and Light could bribe the Shinigami with them. But Light didn't realise what else Ryuk's blatant loyalty meant: that he didn't need to depend on Light at all for his apples.

And he didn't, because he got them long after Light had died, picking them off trees in the Human World and crunching them with delight, core and all. So long as the soil stayed alive and someone planted those apples he could have them.

Getting them from Light was just a part of the game they played together.
