It had been a long day at Torchwood and all Jack wanted to do was get home and curl up with the man that he loved. It had taken more years then he could count but about two years ago he had finally convinced the Doctor that they belonged together. That the universe had destined for them to be together.
Life had it's ups and downs and they had both suffered when the Doctor had regenerated from the spiky haired lithe man to the floppy haired lanky man. The Doctor looked younger then ever and it was only looking into those ancient eyes that reminded Jack of the mans true age. For those eyes showed that the man had seen more and had felt more pain then anyone deserved to carry.
He pulled up to the dark house and turned off the car engine, feeling disappointed. The Doctor was probably out on one of his many TARDIS adventures. Jack smiled to himself as he pictured the Doctor bursting out of the TARDIS with Amy and Rory in tow, laughing. He tried to remember if the Doctor had told him about trips he had planned. Wishing he had paid more attention and swearing he would next time, Jack let himself into the house.
He took off his coat and hung it on the coat rack at the bottom of the stairs. He headed past the office and then stopped when he saw the big blue box sitting in the corner. Rather then feeling relieved that the Doctor was home after all, he felt worried.
"Doctor," he called out and heard nothing in return. He hurried up the stairs and opened the door to the bedroom. The bed was made and the Doctor's suit was folded neatly on the end of the bed. His bow tie was displayed in the middle.
"Sweetheart are you in the bath?" Jack asked as he walked around the cot to where their son was sound asleep. The almost blueness of his skin gave away the fact that it wasn't human but born on a distant planet in the year 7300. The two of them had worked hard to try to save the child's village from disease but this baby had been the only one to survive. They had discussed it and agreed that a baby was the next step in their relationship.
Worried that the Doctor hadn't answered him, Jack turned and headed for the small bathroom off of their room. The light shone underneath the closed door and Jack tried to turn the door handle. It was locked. Cursing, Jack knocked lightly.
"Doctor," He said softly at first.
"Doctor," He tried again louder. "If you can hear me stay back." With a practice move he kicked once then twice and the door flew open. He fell to his knees as the scene came into view. The Doctor was sitting in the bathtub with his eyes closed. The knife lay on the edge beside him and the tub was red with his blood.
Pages of a book by Melody Malone were torn out and scattered through out the bathroom. One of them caught Jack's eye as he noticed the Doctor's hand writing in black marker. All it had on it was one word.
"Sorry."
