Wham! A package, dropped by an owl, landed in front of Neville during breakfast one morning. It was long and wrapped in paper. A note was on top.

To: Neville Longbottom

This is a silly muggle toy I found. It's supposed to find things. Thought you might like it.

-Gran.

"Ooh, I wonder what it is!" said Ginny excitedly after Neville read the note out loud.

He gingerly picked it up, feeling its weight to see if he could figure out what it was.

"Oh, just open it already!" said Ginny again.

"Alright…" He placed it back on the table and started peeling off the brown paper wrapping to reveal a long metal device with a black circle at one end and wires connected to headphones on the other end. "What the heck is that? How in the world is it supposed to find things?"

Hermione looked up from a book she was reading. "Oh, that's a metal detector!"

Neville stared incredulously at Hermione, his face blank. 'What's a metal detector?"

"Well… it detects metal. My father used to own one. You put on the headphones and turn it on. You wave it around over wherever you think metal is, and it beeps. Once it starts beeping really fast, you know that there's metal underneath that round thing at the end. It can only find things made of metal, but it's bloody good at it."

As soon as classes ended that day, Neville ran straight to his room to test out his new device. He put on the headphones, as Hermione said, but he wasn't sure that he was doing it right. Headphones belonged to muggles, after all, so he wouldn't have any idea. She said something about beeping, so he tried to put them by his ears.

He pressed the on button, and he heard a faint beeping. He figured that it must've been coming from the headphones, so he adjusted them so he could hear the beeps louder. He started waving it around the common room, much to the speculation of other students.

No one at Hogwarts really owned many metal items, so it never started beeping during his search. Then, right as he was about to leave for dinner, the beeps increased frequency. "I think I've found something!" he said loudly, receiving glares from a few Gryffindor students.

It detected something inside a couch that no one was at, so Neville carefully put it down and started pulling out the cushions. He shoved his hand into the back of the couch, desperate to find something to write to Gran about.

His fingers finally found something to latch on to. It felt like a galleon! He pulled it out and saw that it was something that he lost. It was the enchanted galleon that Hermione had given to all the DA members! He's been looking for it for at least two months and had to rely on others to find out the dates and times of all the meetings.

He pocketed the coin and quickly put away his metal detector. He nearly skipped to the Great Hall that evening. He couldn't wait to tell Hermione that after weeks of looking, he found a lost item.
