Art was as normal as ever. Which is to say, it was absolutely great, then suddenly terrible. They were working on paintings in class now, and Punzie was a really wonderful painter! Merida even thought that she could get paid for something she painted. She really liked making suns, but oddly shaped ones, like they had tails or something, Merida had no idea how she should describe it - either way, Merida would tease her endlessly about it, singing, "You are My Sunshine" to her everytime she painted a sun.
Rapunzel poked her head around and asked, "What are you painting today?" Merida immediately blushed and covered her work from her. She couldn't see! Not yet! Maybe not ever!
"Haahaa….." Nothing, nothing at all! I don't think it's very good, besides, class is almost -" the bell rang, now it was over. But, unfortunately, it made Merida jump, and Rapunzel caught a glimpse of what was on the canvas. Merida had painted a girl. She had painted a picture of Rapunzel, except she remembered. The beginning of the year, when Rapunzel had been talking about changing dreams. Rapunzel's hair was long, and blonde. All you could see was her from the back, she was looking at a canvas, painting a sun. The painting was surrounded by a golden border of calligraphy, saying, "Dreams can change. But you wont. That dream will never change." Rapunzel was shocked. Was this… a confession? She looked to Merida.
Merida was a blushing mess, on the verge of tears. When Rapunzel looked at her, it was a look of shock, and confusion, and, for all she knew, disgust. she covered her mouth and fled. Far, far, far, away. She didn't want to be caught. If she was caught, something would happen. Good, or bad, Merida didn't care! Whatever would happen would change things.
And for once in her life, that was something she didn't want.
Rapunzel swore. How am I supposed to find Merida and talk to her? How am I- Oh. She had forgotten about detention. Well, then she would wait. She could wait right? What if Merida skipped out on detention? What then?
She wanted to text her, but how was she supposed to do that if Merida's phone was broken from… well, you know. So she really did just wait until the end of the day detention, which was about half an hour. She had to think though, so it was alright. What would she say? What could she say? What if Merida really did like her?
Sure, it would be a good thing. But it would be a complicated thing. So many things could just… go wrong.
Merida sat in the schools garden hugging her knees. No.. this wasn't how she was supposed to find out! She's probably disgusted, and she probably won't want to be friends with me anymore…
Merida didn't want to cry. But she couldn't help it. She very well could have lost a friend. The worst part was probably… not knowing what Punzie was thinking about the whole thing. Is she sad? angry? disappointed? disgusted? Merida sighed. She wouldn't know until… Shit! Merida thought, Detention. What am I going to do?
"… Merida? What's wrong?" A girl stopped. What was her name again? Oh yeah, it was… Elsa, right? Yeah that was it. She kneeled down, her pastel blue skinny jeans probably getting dirty in the mud.
Merida smiled, but she knew she wasn't kidding anyone. "Ah… um. Ah sorta had a crush on P- on someone who I probably shouldn't have a crush on…" She sniffled loudly. "I think I ruined everything. I'm sorry... you probably don't have a clue what Ah mean…." She sniffled again and wiped her nose.
Elsa's face grew dark. "Oh… I understand that all too well. Trust me on that one. If I'm anything, it's the queen of liking the one person you really, really shouldn't." She gave a nervous laugh. "Just let it all go. It helps to talk about it." She gave a sad smile.
Merida laughed. "Ha, thanks, but I have to go to uh, detention." She wiped her eyes and looked back at Elsa. "You know… thank you. Really. I'll see you in Geometry?" Elsa looked shocked, but nodded and smiled. "See ya!"
She put on a brave face and headed for room 204, the detention room.
Jack watched as he saw Rapunzel walk into the room with an angry, annoyed, and sad all at once expression on her face. He wondered if she was okay. When he opened his mouth to speak though, the teacher glared at him so hard he lost his confidence.
The teacher waited a moment, then spoke up, "I do believe there are supposed to be four of you? Where is that other girl?" he shook his head. "Honestly, she should have just stayed at her old school, we don't have time for kids like her."
Jack looked back at Rapunzel, and found that she was fuming with anger. Her fists were clenched, and she was glaring at the old man. Jack was surprised, but not that much. He kind of guessed that Mer and Punzie both swung that way anyway.
Someone knocked on the door. The old man told Hiccup to get it. Grr, really? Can't get it yourself you old bag!? Jack thought. Hiccup walked over and opened the door. He smiled at her but she just pushed past him and took a seat in the front corner. Incidentally, it was also the seat farthest away from Punzie. Jack took one look at her face and he knew she had been crying.
Rapunzel watched as Merida took a seat, as far away from her as possible. She sighed. I sooo could have dealt with that situation better. But Merida needs to put some work into our relationship too! Well, not yet, but if we resolved this….
I thought you said you weren't going to do anything that would end up complicated? I thought you said you had it under control? the little voice inside her head spoke. She sighed. She wasn't really planning on it… but did it matter anymore? It was already complicated, and even if she was no longer in control of her feelings, it seemed she liked it better that way.
How was she supposed to talk to her? She didn't know. But she had to do something!
Merida avoided eye contact with Hiccup as he opened the door and pushed past him when he tried to say hello. She could see the hurt and worry in his eyes as she did so, and she almost turned back. She ran to the seat farthest away from Rapunzel. How was she supposed to go about this?
Think about it. She blew that one extra strand of messy hair out of her face. Theres like a 2… no, 1% chance that she doesn't hate you, feel disgusted with you, and/or never want to see you again. But she will if you keep acting like a crybaby. So what? You confessed! Well not really, but still!
Uhg. She hit herself in the head a few times for being dumb. She hid her eyes with her hair that way Punzie couldn't she her look at her. When she peeked through, she saw Punzie. She had a worried expression on her face. It was genuine. From her face, Merida could see that sure, Punzie was worried sick, but she wasn't angry. Confused, a little, and maybe a little frustrated, but Merida had known her long enough to know that it wasn't anger.
Merida had known her long enough to know that she was fucking in love with that girl.
The detention bell rang and Merida immediately stood up. She knew what she had to do.
Rapunzel nearly leapt out of her seat and opened her mouth to ask Merida if she would just listen for like, two seconds when out of the blue Merida grabbed her hand and kissed her right on the spot. She was so surprised she nearly fainted.
Merida had a great determination in her eyes when she softly spoke to her, "This is how I am. I like girls - well…" Rapunzel smiled. It was cute, she was getting flustered. "Well, I like…I like you! You're kind, smart, pretty… and you're freaking adorable sometimes you know! But if you hate me… then I apoligi-" Merida's lips stopped moving.
Because, suddenly, there were someone else's lips pressed right against hers.
Rapunzel pulled away, giggling. "So I guess this makes us an official couple then?"
