Reviews for Checkmate to a Castled King
SilverChrysanth chapter 1 . 4/25/2019
Hello!

So, one of the things I don't like about reading multiple (almost the whole 40!) stories from an author is that I usually don't have the time to review every single one of them, and therefore must give a general review on them all, as well as the last one.

I absolutely enjoyed this story. The length seemed daunting because I wasn't sure how you would go about it, but I was pleasantly surprised, despite this being the last story of yours I've read at the moment. Each scene flowed smoothly to the next, the characters were excellent, and unlike a lot of what I've seen, Sherlock didn't spiral into hysterics or emotions too extreme for his character. I truly didn't know what to expect his reaction to be, but it tied in perfectly with his feelings, and weakened health (I always see John being the one to faint, so I didn't see it coming!).

I have to admit, I was very curious and a bit disappointed that John's detainment was never explained or observed, other than a few snippets of what he went through. Maybe you meant it to be that way, focusing not so much on his situation but Sherlock's, or just simply watching your word count.
But that's the only real complaint I have with it. The ending was so sweet, and beautifully wrapped everything up.

Overall, I love your writing and prose, and almost every premise to your one shots (or multi-chapters) had me hooked from the moment I read them. I especially enjoyed your character studies, even looking up a scene from John and Mycroft's first meeting (trying to see what you saw in the tilt of John's head); you see things I didn't even notice, giving me some thoughts about body language and the masterful skill of showing.

Anyway, I'm finished rambling on about your stories and I apologize for the length of this review. Thank you so much :)

Yay! John's alive, and they are both happy and their beautiful friendship lives on! I loved how well written Sherlock's reaction was, to both John's death and his return. I also love love loved all of the hugs and gorgeous friendship elements! I am so glad you didn't make it slash!
Firenze Fox chapter 1 . 7/27/2016
The reunion between John and Lestrade is my favorite fucking thing in the universe. Oh my god. Perfect.

detectivejigsaw chapter 1 . 6/3/2014
Poor Lestrade. He has to go through so much...And the reunion of John and Sherlock was so incredibly sweet; it's lucky Sherlock didn't punch John, because what happened wasn't his fault.

"Bugger off!"
"You bugger off!"
I don't think I've laughed this hard ever! I've got tears down my cheeks and at least two cracked ribs! This story was amazing! Each and every moment was an amazing read. The characterization was perfect. I could see each reaction clearly and naturally in my mind. Sherlock's reaction to the situation was by far one of the most realistic reactions I've ever seen somebody describe. Well done. Well done indeed!

My goodness, this is amazing! It appears that most of the stories you upload are great, but this one was epic and pretty damn adorable at the same time. Thanks for that. And kudos for the extremely well-done translation!

I admit. I cried. No, I BAWLED. I required plenty of tissues to get over the angsty parts. SHERLOCK! NOOOO! But the ending is so utterly perfect that I loved it
T'Paya chapter 1 . 12/30/2013
Loved reading your story. Sherlock doing 'ordinary' grieving- no way!...your idea here was quite believable though.
I liked how you involved Mycroft and the friendship bits were great. Thanks!

Lengthy? Yes. Too Lengthy? Yes. But boring? NO! You managed to keep all of them in character, and this is what made me read this fanfiction at 1.00am in the night, when usually at this time, I do more interesting stuff than reading fanfictions, or reviewing them. Continue writing and I'm sure one day you can boast of perfecting perfection. I write too, just in case you're wondering. And since I still haven't reached that coveted state of perfection in my writing, it makes it even more logical for me to give you sound advice on the subject, don't you think?
And I especially enjoyed the way you brought out Sherlock's vulnerability. Continue writing and make this world a happy place. :)
