Steve wouldn't even have to think to save one of his team, especially his partner, it's ingrained in him due to his SEAL training and the person he is. The safety of the team always above one's own safety and well-being. Nothing is worse than not being able to prevent a team member getting hurt. It's not a conscious decision for someone like Steve, but simple instinct.

Besides, I'm sure Danny would have acted the same way.
