Ellen Weaver chapter 4 . 3/17/2014 Katherine Briggs said once that the line between faeries and the unquiet and dangerous dead is hair-thin. Jareth-as-demon is completely appropriate here. I adore this characterization. It has more tell-than-show than I'd use, but the details with the show are just so glittering fantastic that I have no cause for complaint. It's good. It's very, VERY good. It's delicious. The smoke of the offering fills the nostrils. The only qualm I have (and this comes because I'm an utter sucker for redemption stories and have to watch my appetite like I would for chocolate cake) is that Sarah/Cerah is destined to save him. I hate the idea that Sarah has to serve the King and save him, because screw him! He should beg for her on his knees and not get her-not if she's a means to an end. But darn it all... I do love redemption stories. And I like the way this one's being told. Could go badly. |
Ellen Weaver chapter 2 . 3/17/2014 I'm very, very much digging your depiction of the Fae. Lots of authors go the easy route, and make Jareth a man with some fantastic powers. But you've gone above all that, with someone who has magic at his essence, all wrapped in occasional skin, made of inhuman appetites and desires. It's powerful stuff, especially here in the second chapter, when we see how his feelings for Sarah are contrasted with his essential nature. I'm not sure I entirely trust your Jareth (which is great), but I feel very strongly that he's a protagonist, not an antagonist (something, again, which is rarely done.) I'm so glad this story got recommended to me. Really intelligent crafting. I'm excited to read more. I'm also beginning to wonder if Sarah's death isn't somehow also Jareth's fault, given what we see here. |
