Guest chapter 24 . 12/4/2018 If you ever make it to the AMoNH, make sure you thoroughly explore all of the entire subway stop for it. They took the mosaics to a whole new level. Along the floor on the platforms there are all sorts of animal footprints in black like faux tar on the brown tiles, leading you along. A few even go up the columns. Each entrance/stairway has a different theme as you step down into it, from descending through a cutaway of the layers to the Earth's core to an underwater lively adventure scene to remarkably pretty bugs. Last I was there, they even had some casts/sculptures of actual (not too large but not tiny) fossils sticking out of the walls on the platform, coated in black stuff for durability, some of which stuck nearly a foot out from the wall. With all I've been hearing about them overhauling the NYC subway network, I dearly hope they put that one off until they find a way to preserve or salvage all of it. It's gorgeous. (And a lot larger than most of the mosaics and iconic decorations they've been trying to work around at other stops.) |
