ahh I loved it!

I still haven't dug through my files to send you what I promised-but for now, hopefully an unexpected review will make you smile when you return. This story was not what I expected. It may be due to the fact that Sweet As Sin was my introduction to you work, plus this story is a considerably older one in your portfolio. As such, I was surprised to see that things were so simple and easy in the story. That Blossom and Brick's romance actually had no real hitches other than distance.

To be quite honest, I've never been one to pair the Puffs with the Ruffs. The reason I walk this unpopular path is for fear of limiting the Girls. I love them dearly, and I don't want to see their potential in any way limited or diminished by taking the path of least resistance. However, this doesn't translate into condemnation of your story-such things are merely the matter of opinion, not fit for deciding upon the merit of an author's work. So all this said, I just want to say that I didn't find the story distasteful or off-putting purely because it does something I normally don't.

Indeed, the only thing I found odd was that I felt the couple was a little too happy. I wasn't expecting an ongoing, soap opera like drama. More like I felt there was one component missing-specifically, what Brick and Blossom are looking for out of life. You did a fabulous job of describing the love they share for one another. But I felt there was a piece left on the table about the university situation-specifically how Brick was going away to college in London, the school of his dreams; yet Blossom had forsaken her own educational dream. What kind of life do the two of them plan to build? What do they intend to pursue, apart from each other, now that they are indeed grown up and making the hard choices? Not knowing what their dreams are, and providing that backdrop to make us better connect with Brick's departure, put a limit on the emotional investment of the reader.

Still, this was not by any means a bad story. It simply had room for improvement. This was your first outing at FFN, so my intent is really to point out opportunities where you can take a good story and make it great. I have no idea if it's ever something that you would want to revisit, so please feel free to take my critique with a grain of salt.

Despite that bit of constructive criticism, I think the story still stands very well ten months later. Blossom comes off as very real. She's a beautiful, intelligent, and resourceful teenage girl who has given away her heart without reservation. Her small actions, her gestures, her words and thought processes tell us who she is and what she's feeling, and the sadness weighing her down that she'll be parted from the man she has pinned so much on. The finale of this also improves somewhat on Brick's character-he is kind and chivalrous throughout the final date that takes up most of the story, but we begin to much greater understand how he feels when you draw the illustration of him in his dorm room later, the definition of loneliness. It takes away some of the stand-offishness I felt from him earlier and makes for a great finale to the story.

In all, I would look forward to seeing more matters of the heart from you where Blossom is concerned. She is such an achingly complex young woman, but also one who oozes charm and grace. One cannot help but adore her.
