Ah, I am not sure if Jane would ever think as far, from that angle, but just maybe he would. Funny, the question was never answered in the series. We never find out if Sheriff had family (I think). Very well written, thanks for sharing.

You captured Jane's inner most thoughts and fears really well. He's always hiding behind a facade of one kind or another, but you can see in his eyes this sometimes, great that you saw it and expressed it.
