What a lovely story! I've been re-reading some Castle fanfics lately and I can't believe I missed this gem somehow? You captured their love, their struggles, his pain (and hers!) so beautifully. The show (understandably) skips showing so many of these wonderful moments in between and leaves it up to the viewers to just fill in the gaps themselves. It's honestly tragic but god, with amazing writers like you I don't feel like we missed out. Right from the start...how the skiing accident might have played out, to the end...where it just ties up beautifully into the episode. It was perfect. Loved reading this! Hope to see more from you someday :)

I loved reading of Kate's concern for Rick and giving him TLC. I loved reading about them working through his frustration and restlessness and irritability as he dealt with the pain and limitations of his injury. He had some of Beckett in him when he tried to avoid pain medication, be stoic, and do things for himself. She had to be like Castle has had to be with her, reining in her worries and respecting his choices about practicing on crutches alone and not taking pain pills.

I loved the part where Kate said the "L" word as naturally and casually as you please, and how Castle's heart latched onto the significance and feeling behind it, even though she included Alexis and used a teasing tone. And he recognized that her actions showed her love, too. I always like that he is observant of her and reads her well, noticing when she is tired and discerning the reason is worry affecting her sleep, seeing her come alive with an "aura" when solving a case and loving that about her. I also loved the moments of innuendo and flirtation and when those flickered to passion.

It was a fun story because of the emotion that you brought out for a serious but not life-threatening injury (although Kate was Castle-like as her imagination took her to worse places, fretting over his response to medication in the hospital, dreaming of a worse accident on the mountain and even reliving it in her mind's eye while awake), which allowed for only a touch of angst but not real heartache in the reading.

I know it says complete, but I feel that you could add an epilogue at least.

Interesting story with Castle out of commission and Kate uncertain about her feelings...that's a bit strange. Castle is in pain and he is being Kate-stubborn and a real pain. Not sure what Kate is thinking when she says to herself that she will never get what she needs, not now. Seems a bit strange in this story. Perhaps she is learning he can be just as stubborn as she is and as big a pain when he is sick like this now. Huh, is she saying she needs sex now? Seems she can't wait till a Castle has recovered a bit more? A little patience would seem to be in order.

"He's a man of words, but she tells him so much more without" I LOVE that line. So accurate to them.

Perfect lead into lives of others. You always get the characters down so well, this was a delight to read.

These simple little lines nail how far they've come:

With Kate he doesn't seem to need to try.
Which is good; how it should be.

It feels wrong to be alone.

Thank you for filling in the blanks with such a lovely picture of Kate doling out the TLC while Castle's injured on the slopes. Also great description of the confusion and deceptive comfort of shock. Been there, done that, you pegged it perfectly.
