SaoirseParisa chapter 1 . 1/12/2016 Wow. I saw all the negative reviews your most recent story had been getting, and good lord, they're just terrible. They complain about grammar problems and how you're a bad writer, but upon seeing, this, I've come to the conclusion that they're either delusional, heavily mistaken, or just looking for something to complain about. *hugs* Because I think this is a wonderful one shot. Beautifully written, great, concise prose that doesn't border on pretentiously purple, good characterization, and everything played out naturally. I admit, I haven't seen the movies in a while, I haven't seen the new one with Chloe Moretz, and I haven't read the book, so I don't really know if Sue Snell is meant to be the bully or a girl who's forced into being a bully. I remember Chris being a pretty major antagonist though, and she's not even in this fic! But everything about this one shot is great, so I have no problem with it. Those haters leaving those bad reviews on your other fan fic seriously need to shove it. They're not worth it. After reading this, you've officially won a new reader and follower, and you have my full support. *hugs* |
heartofglass99 chapter 1 . 7/9/2014 Warning: Fandom-Blind. First thing, I really like your summary. It's not flashy or complicated, but it gets the point across well without using many unnecessary words. When I go to look for stories, stories like yours will be the ones I click. When you said "Senior Year: Fall 201" did you mean 2011? I'm canon-blind, so this is just something I noticed. Your first paragraph gives a very nice and clear description of how Carrie feels about school. Besides being quite long for an opening paragraph, it paints a good image of how Carrie is treated unfairly and everyone knows it. Your adverb usage is quite good; you use them frequently and use good adverbs to match different situations. These help make sure descriptions aren't too boring and monotonous. In your descriptions, you may want to consider using more active phrases rather than passive ones. It's not a big deal in your case, but it's worth a look. Changing "seemed to cascade over her shoulders" into "cascaded over her shoulders" paints a better, more fluid mental image. After all, it's a common phrase, so people will understand what you mean. Great description about the light hitting Sue! The analogy about the seraph and the illuminated manuscript really stood out for me. Using several analogies like these in your chapters can really help your story stand out. Not cliches, but clever and pertinent analogies. The last 500 words or so were really incredible. They really were deep, tear-jerking words. The dialogue in your story is really good. The characterization is clear, and your word choice isn't fancy but it's good and concise. You do a good job of making it realistic. Several of Sue's later lines do feel a little bit forced, but it's not a big deal in the grand scheme of things. I'm canon-blind, so this may be impertinent, but Carrie seemed really weak and insecure mentally for a senior. If this was the picture you were trying to paint, you did a successful job. If this wasn't what you were trying to do, you may want to make her appear less uncertain and nervous than she is here. The phrase: (although seeing her cry wasn't a rare sight around Ewen High) takes away from the story a bit. The paragraph is about what was happening presently and that phrase is a bit extraneous. I'd recommend that you read through the story again, especially the long paragraphs, and weed out or cut down superfluous phrases. Description is good, but in excessive quantities, it starts to take away from the story a little. Great idea for a one-shot! Covered: Opening, Dialogue, SPaG, Characters, Enjoyment, and Techniques. I hope you didn't perceive me as too harsh, because all in all, this story has to be one of the best one-shots I've ever read. You have the makings of an amazing writer, I wish you the best of luck in your future writing endeavors! |
