Reviews for Return of the Hero

This was certainly an interesting meeting between Ash and Dawn. There were a lot of unexpected things said, but that is the nature of true conversation: it’s complicated. And so is the future relationship of Dawn and Ash at this point. I kind of like how this wrapped up in an unsure territory.

Hm, the choice for the final ending was a good one, I think. Going back to the start with Nate and choosing his first pokemon really brings back his words about how fate just is and all we can do is go with it. His analogy about choosing a pokemon comes full circle, and I really liked that way to wrap things up.

I think these last few chapters are an apt way to end this story. On the one hand, yes, the intensity and philosophical arguments in the previous few chapters was necessary, even if it seemed gloomy. It gave the story depth. As for these last few chapters, they do tie up loose ends and they do end things on a positive note. After all, it can’t be an Ash story without Ash somehow coming out okay in the end. It just works, you know?

This was just an interesting chapter. Every time you had me thinking the conversation would go one way, you turn it around on me. I suppose that is the nature of Arceus in this story, being conflicted, yet firm in beliefs. However, the biggest surprise was the offer he gave Ash. Didn’t see that coming, but it certainly makes for a good ending.

I knew this would happen, but I’m okay with it. I’ve made my peace with Ash’s decision. I really liked how you were able to weave Nate’s conversation with his first father figure well into the last speech Ash gives him. It was a really powerful scene.

This was certainly a lot of action and chaos as the end of the world draws near, and that worked well for what you’re going for. I’m glad that Nate was able to temporarily stop the Cryogonal army. It shows that as the world comes to an end, or near end, that no one is safe.

I actually like how you explained Kyurem’s involvement with the Sky Soldiers in relation to the introduction of the Fairy-type. It’s kind of a clever way to incorporate new features that were being added to the games. Course, now several years later, I’d love to see if you could do something with the new ideas of Mega Evolution and Z-moves.

I was starting to wonder how Wayne would play into the late-game of this story. But, I already had a sneaking suspicion about Rosa, so no big revelations from him. However, I was surprised he was as “helpful” as he was, even if it wasn’t much. But I understand his reasons. The New Sky Soldiers are polluting his ideal and don’t have a clue what to do.

Things are finally starting to fall into place as the story comes to a close. Ash has come back and helped Nate rescue Yancy. The pokemon are in an all-out fight. And really, all that’s left is for Ho-Oh to get into the fray. Looking forward to the exciting battle conclusion.

Okay, I was with Ash up until this point. It seems he’s kind of gotten confused about his principles and he’s now no better than Arceus. I think if I haven’t said it enough, you really have created a complex story here. True, some of the earlier chapters are a lot of exposition and I wasn’t sure where we were going with this, but at this juncture, it’s clear that you took a lot of time developing these characters to make a more three-dimensional story.

Okay, now I wasn’t exactly expecting Ash to come back from the dead. I was actually thinking he had somehow escaped at the last minute before dying and had only remained in hiding. But, I guess this is still plausible for the Pokemon world. But, of course, you bring in the Watchmaker’s Theory and the existential crisis that comes with it in Ash’s conversation with Arceus. I think that’s the big takeaway from this chapter.

Well, it looks like Ash isn’t quite ready to step up and go back into the limelight just yet. I’m kind of glad for that. I’d love to hear Ash’s side of the story. And it looks like he’s avoided Arceus’ wrath for the time being. So, all I can do is wait to see what’s next.

I’m really starting to see how complex you’ve made Arceus for this story. Most people portray this pokemon as an always benevolent ruler who’s always wise, knows what’s best for the world, and blah, blah, blah. In this case, you’ve raised issues about god, fate, and human will, all things found in mythologies and religions around the world. That’s an incredible accomplishment.

Ooh, I wasn’t expecting Stark to be a part of the opposing side. I knew he resented Harrington and might try to belittle him, but this was a nice twist.

Oh, so we do finally get to see a tournament battle. Way to turn that cliffhanger around, because I was expecting the New Sky Soldiers to spring their trap at the beginning of this chapter. Overall, you really used this chapter space to build the tension, and readers could feel it. Great work!

We finally get to the tournament, but of course, things aren’t going to go as planned. I’m very curious to see what kind of plan Nate has up his sleeve. But, everything else, I could already kind of see coming.

This is definitely a new side to Ash I haven’t seen before. It’s raw, angry, and honestly, more human. Again, you’re going back to this theme of questioning fate and destiny. If the world/a god/whatever has a plan for us, and that plan involves so much suffering, is it worth it? True, it is selfless to give up our own lives for the good of others, but what if we want to live? What if it’s so hard for us to give up what we treasure most just for the sake of the greater good? I like this philosophical discussion you’ve opened up with this story.
